The STEAM is best. I do not use other brands, types that use mist, sprays... Vicks brand with this real steam (like when you boil water on a stove) works well. Add a little salt to increase the steam. Close your eyes when close to it and don't get too close.
Ultrasonic humidifiers require distilled water, lest the droplets evaporate and leave a fine powder of mineral precipitate all over your house and in your lungs. Evaporative humidifiers require new wicks (improperly referred to an filters). And both are susceptible to mold and bacteria growth.
Not this thing. It boils the water, and boiled water is pure and clean. It's how distilled water is manufactured. The heat in the tank kills the bacteria, but the water itself is not at boiling temperature. It's thanks to how the electrodes work. Only the water inside the plastic boiler unit reaches boiling point.
Some people find that their vaporizer stops working after a short time. This is caused by white limescale building up on the electrodes, blocking the current. Still better than an ultrasonic humidifier, which would just fling all that limescale into the air. You can descale the unit with vinegar, which takes maybe 15 minutes. But where I live, the water doesn't have limescale. Nonetheless, I've noticed a decrease in output over 2 years of usage, which could be caused by the electrode eroding away. This is what causes the black flakes when you replace the water.
Regardless, this thing is $18. Just add lots of salt to get the output up, and if that doesn't work, buy a new one. You'll still save money. The manual says not to add more than 1/2tsp of salt, but I add a tablespoon and it floods the house with humidity. It's mesmerizing to watch.
The worst thing about this humidifier is that the output decreases as the water level decreases. For that, I know another reviewer mentioned floating the boiler unit in a five gallon bucket. I need to go find that review.
- It works, and works well. As usual, you'll have to tune the concentration of electrolytes in your water, the simplest method by adding a little baking soda or salt to the tank while filling it up.
- Night light is a nice value added. I later realized that it may actually reduce the chances of stray toddlers running into the vaporizer in the dark on their way to the toilette...
The downside, at least for me:
- It is huge, and the funny shape makes it take more floor space than necessary. The old one we borrowed was smaller (probably about a gallon), had a rectangular shaped tank (very convenient to work with, small footprint), and lasted for at least 6 hours. I might have been happier with the 1 gallon version of the Vicks, but not sure.
- The heating element simply rests on the rim of the water tank. This is a little annoying when you set it up because every small pull of the power cord makes it turn a little, sending the steam to an undesirable direction. Furthermore, the heating element has a single "tooth" on one side, which you'll have to pass through a matching cavity on the rim in order to move the element in and out. This is rather annoying. Finally, I feel that it is not a very safe mechanism: in case the whole thing trips over, nothing really stands between a gallon of boiling water and your sleepy toddler. The old vaporizer we used was designed much better: the heating element would slide effortlessly all the way down, then lock into position by a slight screwing movement. How simple, and how safe!
- The power cord is a bit shorter than I'd like. Together with the floating heating element feature (see above) this turns to be an annoyance when setting up.
This is probably a great choice for larger spaces and where longer running times (10-12 hours) are necessary. You might want to consider the smaller model. For the price paid (under $20) it's a bargain.
One last note: I personally perceive the "complaints" that some reviewers post about deterioration of the electrodes and black residue buildup as total rubbish. This is a natural phenomena with this kind of heating (electrolysis through water containing minerals) and if you follow the cleaning instructions the thing will stay in good shape for a long time.
After the second time trying it, I noticed this stuff floating around the water (see pics). It didn't come from the air and it did not come from the water. That only leaves one possibility.
After seeing this, I requested a refund, but Amazon would not accept it back. I looked back at the product description, and this was my fault. They clearly stated they could not take this type of product back. I will definitely check the return policy on items before ordering anything else. You may want to as well, if you don't already.
The manufacturer's information was available, but they have not been extremely helpful. I have chalked this one up in the loss column and moved on. I've already spent too much time dealing with this.
I may have just received a dud. It happens. If you have other options, however, I would suggest you go that route.

I'm planning to get a whole house humidifier to replace this because it's just too much hassle keeping it topped up all the time in the winter.
