The first one I bought was crap. It didn't plug in it didn't create steam it didn't take hot boiling water it was pretty much false advertising when it showed a photo of steam coming out of the topper when clearly it was quite inefficient. Amazon did the right thing they refunded me and then I bought this one and it's everything I thought it should be. I did see a comment from a another buyer stating the plastic topper was quite flimsy and cracked. Perhaps the other buyer applied pressure to the topper. It clearly states not to rest your chin or your face on the topper. You should hover over the topper and take in the steam. So far I'm 100% satisfied

Before purchasing this, I looked at the reviews and decided to take a chance and I’m so glad I did! I don’t know what everyone else was talking about but don’t listen to them! This steamer works wonders on me!! I’m a singer in a musical right now so I’m constantly using my voice every day and this steamer helps open me up and bring moisture so I don’t feel congested for a long time after waking up. There have been times where I’m coughing up a storm but once I use the steamer everything stops.

I will say it does get hot when you put your face in it for a long time but I would suggest putting a small part of a blanket under your chin to help with that. It works for me!

This is my second one, only because my 1st one had an unfortunate fall. Works perfectly!, the same as it did before. It boils water, you control the steam level via a simple valve. It is not meant for you to rest your face on, just hover near the top to get steam to where you need it. Yes, a cup of boiling water and a towel will do this, but I guarantee this is more comfortable and emits more steam too. You can add the vapor pad thing for a mentholated steam - so soothing for colds.

This product is very nice for sinus steaming. The size is just right for table top use. It heats very quickly & with vents wide open you get a very steady stream as you breathe into the bottom & the steam rises.
It is easy to assemble & take apart for cleaning. The vents are a unique feature & I did prefer having them wide open to get the most in the shortest time. Did wrap a small washcloth around cone to increase containment of steam.
USERS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT THE PLASTIC EDGES ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CONE & SOMEWHAT ON THE TOP OF CONE ARE SOMEWHAT "SHARP" TO THE TOUCH. THE BOTTOM EDGES (ESPECIALLY WHEN CLEANING) SHOULD BE MUCH SMOOTHER. THE CORNERS ARE SHARP ENOUGH TO CUT YOUR FINGERS!
THAT FAULT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED CONSIDERING THE PRICE!

I got my Vicks Steam Inhaler a few days ago. I had been choosing between it and the Mabis one. However, the latter costs $20 more so I decided to go with this one considering almost identical review ratings. I would rate it with 4.5 starts, not with 5. There is still a little room for improvement. It is pretty compact and quick. It starts producing steam in about 4 minutes. Yes, you can regulate the amount of steam. But I found that hot air makes me breath faster and, as a result, there is not enough steam produced by the machine between my breaths. Fortunately, I came up with a nice and simple solution. The mask has a few holes in it to mix the steam with some fresh air. If I cover with my fingers some or all three holes I get enough steam with every inhalation. It's pretty convenient, at least, for me and allows to (manually) regulate the amount of steam.
Another thing important for me was a possibility to use oil. Neither Vicks or Mabis inhaler assume that you can directly add aroma oil to water. Both brands sale their own inhaler pads designed to work with their machines. But the choice of oils is very limited. By the way, the Vicks Inhaler comes with a disposable pad good for one time use. Some people reported that they had still added a few drops of oil. For some it worked fine, for the others it didn't work that well screwing in some way the water heating surface. What I did is I bought this refill kit (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000XPX1HG) and it's been working great for me. You can put a pad directly on the plastic thing with the holes the steam comes out. The only difference with the original pad is form but it works great. It does not mess with the water heating surface and you can refill those cotton pads with any oil you want. For the future, I'm going to buy cotton pads and oil separately. I prefer to use calendula and there is no pads or kits coming with calendula extract.

Have used it for 3 days and has helped me more with me lung congestion after a bad cold then the inhalers I got from the doctor.
Makes a lot of steam and fast. I had it closed as far as it goes and still had more then I needed.
The product also came with one packet of a eucalyptus soaked pad that fits into one of the two slots in the steam chamber.

Definitely recommend this product.
