Product Description: Omron HJ-112 Pedometer
No matter where you're going, make every step count with the HJ-112 Pedometer. Using Omron 2D smart sensor technology, this dual-axis pedometer tracks steps accurately, whether it's in your pocket, on your belt, or clipped to your bag.
When You Know Your Numbers, You'll Grow Your Numbers
You'd be surprised by how many steps you already take each day. A few hundred walking to the bus, a couple thousand going a few blocks down for lunch, and with an Omron Pedometer, you'll know just how many steps you're taking and begin looking for ways to see that number get bigger every day.
Every Step Counts
Omron Pedometers use smart sensor technology rather than the standard pendulum system to get a more accurate reading. Many Omron Pedometers, including the HJ-112, can be programmed to your personal stride length to provide you with an even more accurate count.
The Omron HJ-112 Pedometer Offers:
Omron Dual-Axis Technology--Counts steps accurately and quietly, whether positioned vertically or horizontally.
Automatic Reset--Start with a clean slate each day to track your steps more accurately.
Weekly Log--Store up to seven days of information in memory; resets to zero at midnight, so you're ready to go every morning.
Six Tracking Modes--Track steps, aerobic steps, time, distance, calories, and fat grams burned.
Tracking for Two Kinds of Steps--The HJ-112 tracks both regular and brisk steps separately.

A Few Steps Toward a Healthier Life
Walking is a great way to stay healthy. In fact, walking 10,000 steps a day is widely recommended by health and fitness professionals. And when you track your steps with a pedometer, like the Omron HJ-112, studies show you're likely to increase your total number of steps a day by about 2,000, or 1 mile.*
Getting Started
Warm Up First--Before your walk, stretch (arm circles, hip circles, and leg lifts) to get your blood flowing and reduce the risk of injury.
Use a Pedometer--Omron Pedometers are the partners you can count on when you want to accurately track your daily routine and help you reach your recommended 10,000 daily steps.
Set Goals--Begin slowly and work your way up. By setting goals you'll push yourself farther and achieve more.
Mix It Up--Add variety to your routine by changing pace, walking uphill, or just changing your route.
Add Resistance--Include some upper-body exercises as you walk, such as arm reaches or carrying water bottles in each hand to increase your calorie burn.

While you walk, the HJ-112 quietly and accurately measures steps, aerobic steps, time, and distance. It also calculates calories and fat grams burned.
The large screen separately displays aerobic steps and minutes, which the pedometer calculates after 10 minutes of continuous walking at more than 60 steps per minute.
The HJ-112 counts steps with 5 percent accuracy.

You first install the included battery. Very easy to do. Then you enter the time, your weight and stride distance. The latter is not at all hard to do. You walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance of those steps, divide by ten. Then convert that to feet and inches. There are calculators online that will do that if you have problems.
My first ten steps entered ten steps exactly! I was impressed with the accuracy.
The calories take awhile to enter but they do enter. I'm not yet sure how accurate the calorie count is but from all the reviews I've read, they're very accurate. This unit is currently rated number one in Consumer Reports.
I was a bit surprised that I danced about a half hour and nothing showed on the aerobic steps. But I think it is rather touchy on the type of steps taken. It says that shuffling may not read and perhaps dancing could be considered shuffling.
One thing that impressed me and is important to me is that it registered my steps on my Gazelle! Most pedometers won't do that. At least the digimax I have does not and it too is top rated. My Gazelle is old and the computer is broken. So this means a lot to me.
All in all, if you're going to buy a pedometer, this is the one to buy --- hands down.
I wish there were a way to count calories while weight lifting and other activities. But for most people this is the way to go. It will keep you motivated and help you in your quest for fitness. And it will give you a gage of your daily activity and tell you if you need to improve.
I believe the motivation alone is of tremendous value when you're trying to lose weight, or get fit or stay fit. And this convenient unit will help you.
I also love the fact you can thrown it in your pocket or just about anywhere and get results.
Update: I put the unit in my front pocket and put the face toward my leg. I did an aerobic dance and it tracked the steps and calories. So it turns out it does track this sort of activity, which adds greatly to the value of the pedometer.
UPDATE: 9/16/2007 - I had the chance to discover how well made this is. I accidentally dropped it on a cement floor right on it's face. Believe it or not, there was no harm done. Looked the same. Intact and worked as usual. I was quite impressed.
UPDATE: 2/20/2010 - Guess you can tell I've had this a long time. I'm about ready to upgrade. But I've a few comments as a long-time user that may help future buyers. I find that this unit does not always record steps. That makes it less than accurate. Also, I've never found that it would work when I put it in my bag or carried it in any manner other than in a pocket. Moreover, it doesn't always record even then.
Battery life is short. Typically a battery may last three months. Setting the stride is the key to accuracy and it's not as easy to do as one might imagine. I ended out using a typical user of my height and found that gave the most accurate results in my case. For casual use, I still think this is a good unit. But it's not as good as I thought or as good as most reviews have made it sound. I've compared it to the popular Digi-Walker 701 and find both about the same in accuracy but I lean toward this unit as being somewhat more accurate. By the way, customer service is excellent should you need it.
The unit is the size of a regular egg, squished flat, and has everything you need to do right at your fingertips. Compared with other pedometers I've used, setup is VERY easy. You hit the SET button and guided prompts help you enter your details. Then you are ready to go!
This unit is great. You can wear it at your waist. You can clip it on your belt or something and hang it. You can leave it in your pocket. You can put it in your purse. As long as it is hanging vertically, it is fine.
How about accuracy? I had a Sportline unit that was literally twice as much. I took it and this Omron unit out on a mile walk, with a GPS unit. The GPS unit verified the distance we traveled. The Omron unit said I took 2284 steps which worked out properly. The Sportline unit claimed I only walked 1825 steps!! That's not just a small mistake, it's a huge discrepancy.
The Omron unit has a full seven day timer built into it, based on the time of day you enter. So every day at 12:00 midnight it rolls over and starts tracking a new set of values. This might be a little annoying if your intention is to track just a short hike and track the details. But still, it's great for overall health. If you really want to track the details of a given hike, you could either reset the entire unit, or what I personally would do is just note the steps you were starting at, and then subtract it out when you finished the hike. That way you know your short term progress but also still have that seven day memory in its system.
Because it doesn't track the "current" hike this also means it isn't calculating steps per minute or other time-related counts. Again, this isn't a big deal for me at all. But if you are solely using your pedometer for "short term" hikes and really want to see that number right away, this might not be the pedometer for you.
It does calculate the calories burned based on the weight you entered. That's always nice to know!
The unit is very accurate and works in any location as long as it is vertical. So you can clip it on your belt, clip it on your purse, carry it IN your purse (as long as you arrange it so it's vertical) have it in a pocket etc. This makes it very flexible.
Highly recommended!
