Broken Machine Head
I bought this guitar for members to use at a drop-in community support center. I've been playing for 20 years, and my first guitar was a Jasmine from back when the brand was owned by Takamine. I was afraid that the quality would be less than in the Takamine days.It arrived today and sounds pretty great! Unfortunately, the back of the guitar has a scratch on it, and one of the machine heads is missing a tuning key. Bummer. Seller, please send me a new machine head so I can replace it!

The nut width on this guitar is 1.75", which is not as common as the 1 11/16th that all other guitar manufacturers seem to produce. The Jasmine acoustic guitar (whether dreadnaught or cut away, sans pickup) is still the best value for the money for an entry level guitar. I purchased the sunburst model to gift to someone, and it performed, like others, so excellent for the money that I wanted one of my own. Whether it's the bracing or the nut width (I lean towards the playability of the 1.75" nut width), the Jasmine acoustic guitar is by far still one of the best starter guitars/beater guitars around. As they age they sound better, and if you should choose to upgrade the tuners, even more so. I donate to charitable causes when I can, and this guitar is a go-to for quality as a kick a$$ donation item. It is NOT in the realm of Esteban or others; it by far exceeds them, and they seem to hold up over time. When you combine the 1.75" nut width with quality bracing, you end up with a great sounding guitar. If one learns on this model and wants more capability, then of course move to a Martin (Mexico or USA made), or Taylor (Mexico or USA made), or Breedlove (unsure of origin, so play before purchase; USA models are AWESOME), or other where budget permits. But for the money, you can't beat the sweetness of the tone with this brand. I've purchased the dreadnaught in plain spruce many times, and now recently a burst finish, along with the cutaway in spruce (many times over), and they all were consistent. I've personally owned and donated about 15 of these guitars, as they are solid performers. They were sound choices for gifting to someone a tool that enabled personal expression and personal enablement, at a level that was of quality, and not just something mass produced.

The guitar market of 2024 has so many samples to pick from, and guitars with pickups are not always ideal. The thought process behind buying a guitar should start with something like "I want to create", and that doesn't mean an electric pickup. When the power is off, and the phone is off, the mind is better tuned in to finding that 'inner something'. Does this guitar help that out? Yes, without a doubt. If you can develop your chops, of course a higher end guitar will offer a smoother neck, solid footing with fretting, and a better tone or sustain. But for the money? OMG, what if Jasmine was around during the time of Woodstock? They would have sold out for months. Start out basic, and this guitar is probably the best value for starting out basic., Even with a few Taylor and Martin's in my collection now, there will always be a Jasmine. Seriously. Unless the production mix changes (please don't change!!!), this is by far a great ROI for the purchase.

I want to start by saying that most of the very few negative reviews on here are because these individuals do not know how to set up a guitar, or know that most new guitars need to be set up in the first place.

I think it may be done to save labor, but the truss rod is often not tightened, and the saddle is too high.

This guitar also has the capability to sound like a $400 guitar, but this will cost 20 in extra parts. A TUSQ saddle and a new set of strings. I prefer medium-light for these lesser expensive guys, if the action is set correctly, it will be easy to play and sound beautiful. These are not necessary, but for all the reviewers who say this doesn't sound as good as some of the nice ones, put the new saddle on and the new strings, set the action, torque the truss rod, and you have yourself a wonderful sounding guitar.

Regardless of your experience with guitars, an easy test to see if this guitar needs to be set up is to stick a quarter under the 12th fret. If it has room on top of it before it touches the string, it will need to be set up. Proceed to step 1, if the quarter fits just perfectly with no room, congrats, you got lucky, you are ready to play.

1.) If you are new to guitar, I would highly recommend taking it to a guitar shop and having them set your action. This will usually cost 20-30 bucks but will make this guitar play really nicely, and your progression as a guitarist will be effortless instead of very difficult. I dont recommend spending the extra money on a new saddle or new strings for a beginner. To them, this thing will sound full bodied as it is, and you can switch out the saddle and the strings in 6 months or a year when you replace the strings anyway.

If you are not new, or new but handy with little repairs and such, go on you-tube and type in "how to set up your new guitar" A great video of how to set it up. For anyone experienced with guitars, the sound quality will be pretty good stock, but to make it resonate and sound full bodied and amazing (like a true solid spruce top guitar) change out the saddle for a TUSQ or something equivalent and buy some Ernie ball Earthwood medium light 80/20 strings. Together they run $20 and once your action is set correctly and your truss tightened perfectly this thing will sound like a $400 takamine, No joke.

I keep referring to the action, this is the amount of space between the frets and the strings, it is the most crucial part of setting up a new guitar and will make ease of playing, sound quality and the whole experience fantastic. The way to decrease action is to loosen the strings enough to pull the saddle out and sand it down 1/32 - 1/8th inch depending on how much is needed. This process takes less than 10 minutes yet many players don't know how, or don't know that this is an option.

Many reviewers on here say that the "action is too high" which it may be, but it is VERY easy to fix, and makes or breaks any inexpensive guitar. Please don't listen to the bad reviews from the individuals that have not yet set up their action correctly, this is a takamine (Taak-ah-mani)which is a fantastic brand that makes fantastic quality guitars, do not be fooled by the price tag. This is a beauty, and is simple but perfect for any person with a spare 100 bucks.

And honestly, I would not buy any guitar upgrade until you could afford a Seagull s6 (roughly $400) as the seagull will play like a $1,200 guitar. DO NOT waste your money on any other cheap guitar out there, and remember... when you buy a new guitar, it needs to be set up!

You now know more than 90% of the people out there, so the next time you hear someone saying "the action is way too high" or "This cheap guitar doesn't have sustain" or "this doesn't sound full bodied like the nice ones." Just smile and know that all they need is to buy a new saddle, some new strings, and adjust the action (all less than 20 bucks if you do the work yourself). I have seen friends buy $1000 guitars and never sand the saddle down, it makes me sad.

I know this is long guys, but thank you for reading, I highly recommend this guy, and I highly recommend the seagull s6 as the next guitar upgrade. Have fun playing!

They don't make cheap guitars like they used to; thank god! (On mine), no defects or shotty workmanship; the neck is as straight as an arrow. The sound is more bold than bright; this is a taste feature. Rich tones that you can feel, as well as hear, as you play it. Great guitar for beginners, a practice instrument, entertainment as you travel and I wouldn't hesitate to it play for an audience. The neck has a silky smooth feel and the action is quick and clean; no buzzing or off-tone frets. I would have chosen a richer color, but this was the color that was on sale. Every guitar is a little different, so I cannot assure anyone that they will have the same experience with their Jasmine S35 Acoustic Guitar; but if you don't, send it back. Great bang for the buck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous value for beginners or intermediate
Reviewed in Canada on April 10, 2020
Color: NaturalStyle: GuitarVerified Purchase
I have picked up more guitars then most beginners. Over the years I've owned 5 guitars. Due to life I had never stuck to the instrument and put my time and energy into learning properly.

Now I am an obsessive researcher. I spend months reading and learning about products and activities before I spend a penny.

This coupled with my previous knowledge and failings to stick to it, I knew what I needed and what would truly impact my sticking to it now.

An instrument has to be appealing, visually and sonically so you will want to pick it up.

These Jasmins are gorgeous. The colors that come out of the wood imbue the instrument with a warm, cozy, and familiar feeling. Holding it makes you feel like sitting around a fire with friends.

Sonically the guitar is warm and rich with just the right amount of brightness. Even in my inexperienced hands its notes ring true. No buzzing here.

Right out of the box, I let it sit in my house for several hours to acclimatize to what will be it's normal temperature. Then I brought each string a bit closer to being in tune, let it sit for a few minutes to give the neck a chance to adjust to the tension. Then I actually put the guitar into tune.

The strings are of decent quality, unfortunately my g string has damage right over the sound hole so I wont be getting much life out of these strings.

That single bur on my g is the only complaint I have. The tuners while not being any marked brand, feel excellent and have zero slop. That being said I have needed to tune the guitar every time I've picked it up. I accredit that to new strings on a new neck tho, as every string is off by the same amount flat each time.

The action was set beautifully. Perfectly actually the same as I've paid luthiers previously to get right. In other words for the people who don't know. The string height is adjusted to a better distance above the neck making it easier to play.

The guitar comes with nothing but the allan key for truss rod adjustment. If you're new this affects the curvature of the neck and as I just said the action is already perfect so you don't need this tool.

However you should get a tuner, capo, case, some pics and either a stand or a hanger.

If you are learning on your own at home there is a ton of resources to aid you. Personally I have found justinguitar, fender play and yourguitsrsage to be the best available.

The finger pain will pass, don't keep at it ro long at any one time until you've developed callouses. If you do you're only going to dislike the process.

Rock on.

I’ve been playing guitar for two decades now, wow that makes me feel old.

Ok so this is probably one of the BEST acoustics I’ve played for the money.

As a beginner you want something that won’t KILL your fingers, the action on this compared to other cheap acoustics is crazy. It’s easy to press down, and the strings aren’t far form the neckboard. It’s perfect for somebody new or that wants a camping acoustic.

The sound isn’t mind blowing however it has a bright beautiful sound that only a quality manufacturer would bring. Which is why you can immediately tell that this was made by Takemine.

Anyways solid sound but most of all easy on the fingers.

HIGHLY recommended for the price or if your budget is tight, which mine was.

I did all the research and read all the reviews, spent over a day learning about this guitar before buying it, so let me save you the time.

Buy it LOL.

Obv there are some things like setup etc or it coming with a defect that I can’t control but for me it came ready to go out of the box with no setup needed. I only changed the strings.

Enjoy!

It was left at my door. The courier didn't knock or ring so it wasn't until I noticed on the tracker that it had been delivered that I found it leaning against the wall at my door. The box was ripped in a few places and was not fastened closed. Inside was the dreadnaught wrapped in thin styrofoam sheeting.with an elastic band holding the truss rod wrench on the headstock. I held my breath while unwrapping and was amazed to see the guitar. It had only a small scratch at the top of the headstock.. whew. Yes it is a small scratch about 2 mm to 1/4in. It's incredible that greater care is not taken to box these to be sealed and imbedded in paper or strong padding.
The guitar is very well constructed. Inside bracing is glued without any gobs of glue showing. I looked with a flashlight (torch). The external black binding is very nicely fitted and the wood, once the dust is wiped off, can be felt to be thinly satin finished and all joins are tight with no spaces or ill fitted areas. There is just a visible neat glue line under the strings on the rosewood bridge which is probably good procedure. A glue line can also be seen between the neck and the top of the body but this is very neat and again evidence of good construction.
What surprised me further is the body top wood. It is a streaky reddish beige color. The sides are like the picture at Amazon. I had expected to see a spruce colored light wood with brownish lines like in the Amazon picture and the picture at Jasmine.com and like my Epiphone Spruce top, I find it hard to believe it is Spruce. EDIT After research I conclude that it is a heartwood cut of Spruce; hence the redish non-striped appearance of the top and also the back: this is attractive and possibly more functional than the usual sapwood cut and will attract less water from humid air so, it's all good.
The Jasmine websites lists this guitar model having a "select spruce" ("select" usually means thin ply layers like my Epiphone) top with Agathis back and sides. The back and sides look like Agathis.
The guitar grows on me. I wanted a dreadnaught and I am impressed by the harmonics and notes projected by his instrument. It is easy to play and sounds magnificent. I paid 100 bucks + tax and got all the sound I was hoping for from a good sounding instrument but am puzzled because I don't know what wood is used other than Agathis and Spruce ply on the body. The neck is Nato with Rosewood fretboard and Rosewood bridge. I'm pretty sure I will keep it and enjoy big beautiful sounds.
Months later, I'm glad I kept it and the action, I forgot to mention earlier, was amazingly perfect right out of the box and remains so.
