There are a few tricks to replace a handle with success. First is to cut the old handle off just below the head. I use a bandsaw at home or my circular saw in the field. BE CAREFUL. Second I use a drill to drill out the old donut wedges, usually a hole the size of the inside diameters. Then a few smaller holes around them. Next I use another hammer or mallet and a chisel or screwdriver to knock out the remaining bits of wood and the wedges. Now take the new handle and slide it into the hammer head till it is snug. Then hold the handle upright with the head on the bottom. While holding the hammer in midair, use another hammer to hit the handle on it's base (the end opposite the head). This sounds weird, but will actually pull the head up and give a solid fit. Next, cut the excess handle off smooth with the top of the head and pound in the wedges. I usually hold them with a set of pliers to avoid hitting my fingers.
Would buy again for hatchets.
