The impact-resistant acrylic level vial outperforms less durable tube-type vials. This 6 in. workhorse even acts as a depth gauge. Plus, the compact design allows it to fit right in your pocket.
The Combination Square
This is the only composite combination square with both a precision-etched stainless steel blade AND brass hardware! This tool has 45° and 90° marks and even acts as a depth gauge. The impact-resistant acrylic level vial outperforms unreliable tube-type vials while the Speedlite construction makes this square a durable featherweight.
The Combination Square

A mainstay in Swanson’s tool lineup, this 12 in. workhorse also acts as a depth gauge and has CNC-machined working surfaces for more reliable accuracy.

This 16 in. combination square is ideal for big jobs. It has our impact-resistant acrylic level vial for long-haul durability. Like our other combination squares, it also acts as a depth gauge, and CNC-machined working surfaces for more reliable accuracy. Stainless steel and brass hardware makes this tool a life-long companion.

SWANSON FROM THE BEGINNING
The Swanson Speed Square and the “One Number” method of determining the angular pitch of a roof were first developed in 1925 by a carpenter name Albert J. Swanson. As his fellow tradesmen began to appreciate the ingenuity of his idea, they wanted their own Speed Square. Swanson began to hand make the squares to fill the requests for the tool. Demand for the work-saving tool continued to grow and in 1930 the Swanson Speed Square was first sold in interstate commerce. By 1945 Swanson started Swanson Tool Company, Inc. to manufacture and sell the Speed Square through recognized channels of distribution. His son, Ronald C. Swanson assumed control of the company in 1971 and added other quality tools to the line. Today, Swanson Tool Company continues to proudly manufacture and distribute the Swanson Speed Square and other fine carpentry tools from its headquarters in Frankfort, Illinois. The Swanson product line has been, and will continue to be, upgraded and expanded to meet the changing needs of its contractors and do-it-yourself enthusiasts.
Product Description
Product Description
One of the most popular squares in the Swanson lineup, the 12 in. Combination Square features CNC-machined working surfaces for more reliable accuracy as well as 45° and 90° marks. This Square is the perfect choice for common carpentry tasks such as gauging depth, scribing lines for ripping material, mitering, and drawing notches. The blade is made from stainless steel and includes precision-etched gradations in both US and metric units that are accurate to within 0. 001 in. The handle holds a hardened removable scribe for marking surfaces as you work, and its impact-resistant acrylic vial outperforms less durable tube-type vials. Made with the professional in mind, this tool is a carpentry classic. Featuring an impact-resistant acrylic level vial that takes work site abuse better than other vials. A mainstay in Swanson’s tool lineup, this 12 in. workhorse also acts as a depth gauge, and has CNC machined working surfaces for more reliable accuracy.

Oh yeah, it has a level built into the handle, although it doesn't mention it on the package. I didn't check it, because I would have had to find something that I was sure was level, and I didn't want to since I'm pretty sure that when I need a level, I will get a level. It also has a scribe threaded into the handle. I checked it to make sure that it would come out and go back in. It did, and quite smoothly, but it's something else I don't think I'm going to use.
Now I just have to be careful not to drop it.
It's well made, and very cheap, and i didn't expect it to be perfectly square, so I gave it five stars.
Fit and finish are better than you should expect at this price point. I've used Swanson squares for many, many years and often grab them for precision layout. If hey weren't so danged durable I might buy a few more of them. Expect this to be the last square you buy.
Some YouTube wood workers caution against getting a Combo Square that does not have a hardened or tempered blade based on the fear that if the ruler gets bent, you can never unbend it to allow the ruler to slide smoothly. Since it is not marked as such on the ruler, I assume that the Swanson ruler is not hardened, but it is a thick piece of stainless steel and would take some significant abuse to bend it. I figure, it is more economical to just be careful with it, and on the off chance It step on it or abuse it accidentally, just buy another one rather than spend seven or eight times as much to buy an expensive combo square.
