Customers have mixed opinions about the sound quality of the stethoscope. The main drawbacks for me are several. The instrument is heavy and bulky. I want it off my neck when I'm done. Because it is bulky, it won't fit nicely in a pocket, like those sexy Littmans. The two tubes rub together and create a bit of noise, so one has to be fairly still when listening in order for there to be no artefact. Out of the box the SR feels like a pair of ice tongs and need to be adjusted. Though it came with several types of ear attachments, there was no soft option, so I opted for the big flat earpieces which made them the most comfortable.
I have compared the SR with other Littman models and personally find that the sound quality is at least comparable, if not better.
So, the good news is that I was hired one week after I graduated. I used my adequate SR with the intention of getting a sleeker brand. After my first few pay checks came I though about spending the 100-200 dollars on a "higher quality" brand, but then I realized that the SR was perfect for me.
Here's why: The SR is more like an old truck. It works great and does not cost all that much. Sure, it handles like an old truck, but who cares when your hauling wood. The super duper Littman model is no doubt a Ferrari in the world of stethoscopes. But for a new floor nurse, checking for basic heart, lung and bowel sounds there's no real need to drive a Ferrari.
What clinched it for me was the day I saw a fellow nurse come back from her weekend and first thing she announced, "Has any seen my Littman. I left it here and now it's gone." This elicited multiple stories about how other Littmans have been lost. "A doctor borrowed it and never gave it back." or "My dog chewed mine up." or "I left it in the nurses station one day and never saw it again." etc...
Now I leave my stethoscope at work, hanging off the back side the chart rack. Of course it has my name on it, but because it cost less than $20, I don’t worry about the scruples of others. People just don't covet these "cheapo" stethoscopes. If one were to steal it, and maybe I'm just tempting fate here, I'd just buy another.
My final thoughts are summed thusly: It's an inexpensive yet sturdy stethoscope that works great and is easily replaceable should anything happen to it. Sure its bulky, but it's not so bad that I can't put up with it. For some people this may prove to be a deal breaker, but if you're like me and opt for the most practical solutions, this stethoscope is a real steal.
I recently read the review [...]
which I found quite informative. They rated the Omron Rappaport Spragg as the second-best. If they had not taken two points off for the fact that it was double tubed it would've been rated the best. I purchased this item from Amazon. Immediately I used duct tape (called "gorilla tape" comes in black) to stop the double tubing from bumping. The stethoscope is fantastic. It is loud and clear and can be used in pediatrics as well. Sure, the diaphragm is not as tough as a $200 scope, but it comes with a replacement, and you can always purchase more. I recommend this to anyone.
Now for those of you feel a cheap stethoscope is beneath you, I encourage you to buy a very expensive one for the following reason. There is an indirect relationship between the time a stethoscope get stolen, and its price. In short, the more expensive the stethoscope, the sooner you will find that somebody ripped it off. This is especially true if you spend much time in a hospital setting. For most of my career I worked in an emergency room and it seemed that at least once a week, somebody was looking for their stethoscope.
I like anchovies mushrooms and onions on my pizza. Your choice is up to you.
