It takes a bit of power to heat all that metal up but the even heat distribution is nice. I have a 100,000btu propane burner that I use while brewing beer. I use the "Brew In A Bag" (BIAB) method and have never scorched or melted my bags or mash. If you are thinking about brewing 5 gallon all grain batches using the BIAB method, I would go with a larger pot. You can use this one, and I do, but a larger pot would have been better. Because of the water displacement of the grain; when I brew high gravity beers I can't add all of the water from the start (along with all of the grain). Around 15 gallons would be luxurious for that application but I make it work and it works well.
But onto soups and stews... The pot has a stout stance that works well on top of a stove top. Because the pot has a wide circumference and shorter height, the height makes it easy to work inside the pot without needing a step stool. I do wish that the pot was more finely polished but at this price you really can't complain too much.
I have a new but inexpensive stove and this pot really pushes the BTUs to the limit. I have my heat on full blast and it's just enough. Works well but I don't think I could use a larger pot without having to upgrade my stove top to a more powerful model.
I bought it because I believed it was the most pot I could buy at this price range (Sounds like a cheech and chong movie quote). And after using it for a couple of months, I still believe that it is the best deal for what I wanted. Clad bottom, stainless steel, riveted handles, heavy and stout.
Oh one other thing to consider, it's probably too wide to fit into your sink.
The bad news is that residential stove tops, at least like I can afford, are not designed for such large diameter pots. On our stove the pot literally rested on raised portions of the stove top itself and touched an adjacent burner. As result so much heat was lost to those other surfaces that I could never achieve a boil. and resorted to multiple small pots on various burners.
The other good news is this resulted in buying a really good and surprisingly affordable gas burner, that paired with the great pot has me really well set from this point forward.
day to day use for us is not a big deal. we got this only for putting sauces together before putting them in a canner. full of sauce 1 inch from top gave us 37 quarts of sauce.
I hate to buy a pot that I cannot lift, look at, and touch. I want to know what I am purchasing with first hand experience. Big pots, available in high end cooking supply stores are way too costly to even consider. This pot, at $145, is a real bargain.
