This screen is heavy, in both a good way and a bad way. In the positive sense, this is a very heavy duty piece of equipment. It is well constructed and very sturdy. In the negative sense, it weighs about 25-30 pounds, which can be problematic depending on how far you need to lug it. If you are using this for mobile business presentations, you'll probably have a lot of other equipment with you and you'll probably need a cart to get from your auto to your presentation room.
Setup and take-down is very simple. Unclip the tripod from the screen and set it up. Then put the folded screen unit onto the tripod. Then unlatch the two clips on the left and right and spread your arms to open it up. I'm a fairly big guy with a decent wingspan, but I can't spread my arms wide enough to fully open this screen. I had to walk around behind it to use the support hardware to open it the rest of the way. This gave me a great view of the hardware so I could see how well supported the screen is.
One gripe though: The screen unfolds horizontally and the horizontal support is great. However, the tension is very light (which is good, because too much tension might make it slam shut at the wrong time). However, this light tension means that the top of the screen doesn't snap taut, so the slack allows it to curl a little around the top edge. Your choices are to either live with the slight distortion or adjust the size of your projection so that it doesn't use the full area of the screen. I'm still messing around with this, trying to figure out a way to clip this myself and put some tension on that top edge without damaging anything.
I teach a class once a month and needed a good portable screen to replace my ancient mid-60's projector screen. Some of my students complained my old projector and screen were too small and dim. I bought this one after checking the reviews. I am beyond pleased.
It's well made and, as a result, a tad heavy, but not overly so. Pretty heavy duty stand holds it nicely stable at a great height (base of screen 33 inches off floor, top, 76 off floor). Folds up for travel in a flash. Built for many years of travel. I have accidentally walked into my office in the dark when the screen was set up and whacked it pretty hard. There is plenty of mass and "wiggle" to the design so no damage was done. I absolutely love this design!
As for the comment on screen curl, I found a very simple solution: Curl the screen back in the middle, about 6 inches either side of center on the top and bottom edge. Don't "crease it." Just bend it back over nearly 180 degrees and that provides a little "strength girder" to the center span which solves the issue of screen distortion completely. I did mine once and it has lasted for a couple weeks but it's quick and easy to do and results in a perfectly flat screen.
Combined with my new Viewsonic DLP 5133 projector, I am literally light years ahead of my old system. My students will be pleased and my presentation will be that much more professional.
If you need a KILLER portable screen, or a home use screen where you either mount it on the wall or stand it on the tripod slightly away from the wall, grab one of these before EPSON raises the price to $299 where it belongs!
Suggestion for EPSON: Charge another $5 and provide a nice fabric bag to keep dust and wooly-boogers out of this nice unit during transport. It is so nice! (I'll probably end up making my own...)
UPDATE: After rolling out the new screen and projector combo for my last class, I had to pass on how positive the comments were from our students. They loved it!
Pros:
Great price
4:3 & 16:9
Lightweight (consider it is a huge screen)
Nice bright screen
Cons:
Plastic and metal not the best
When closing the screen you need to fidle with it to close properly
The screen is not super tight when extended
Overall for the price and portability as well as the different aspect ratios you can have, makes this screen well worth the price. I would highly recommend this product.
Top reviews from other countries
The flaws in this design, however, as others have mentioned are primarily a bit of a droop at the top of the screen where it folds back slightly as it is not taut. Same for the bottom. There is also a 5-7 inch crease in the middle of the screen that is evident, and clearly a result of how it rolls up inside its own case.
I did some testing with an Xgimi elfin projector on this screen last year and can state that with a projector that has a decent light output and/or if you are watching in a darkened room, the crease is barely visible. With projectors getting better and brighter, they certainly offset any such screen defects. In a minimally lit room and a dim image projected onto it, the crease is noticeable - but not a game changer.
Also the droopiness isn't too much of an issue if you are using a projector with auto keystone. The screen is a good quality thickness with a black border that is still visible even with the drooping top and bottom. I had no issue filling the entire 80 in screen with a full picture, within the black border, wherein all the flaws are basically not noticeable.
I forgot to mention, of course the key thing is the tripod portability. The option to not have to mount anything to the wall. This was ideal since I was just trying out projectors for the first time. Keep room distance in mind if you are not getting a short throw projector. The tripod legs do take up some space.
While I have used sturdier and more robust screens in the past, but the shortcomings of this screen are forgivable given its relatively cheap price. Overall this is not a bad inexpensive product.
