KEEN Men's AND Women's Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boots Still Clocking the Miles 15 Months Later
Purchased my KEEN Men's Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boots, Size 13, in November 2015. Prior to this review, I have been wearing them off and on for 15 months and ~150 - 200 miles on the trails. This includes several multi-day, weighted backpacking trips with some moderate elevation and moderately technical trails. These boots have served me well, providing a comfortable fit and with no quality issues. In an effort to shave weight wherever I can for some longer section hikes on the Florida Trail and the Appalachian Trail this year, I briefly considered switching to trail running shoes, over these. However, the light weight of these made the gains minimal and at the expense of security and support. I'll stick with my KEENs and hope to seem them carry me many, many miles over the next few years! P.S. - My girlfriend has a pair of the KEEN Women's Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boots, has put hers through the same paces, and loves hers equally!

Update: Oct 2017. I've had these for two years now and the quality has been first rate. I've worn them on many many hikes and snowshoe outings and they have held up well. I think they've still got years of service left. One thing is I went back to the original keen footbed. They never felt quite right with the superfeet and it turns out the the original footbed molds perfectly to your foot with wear. Easily the most comfortable boot that I've owned.

I wanted a pair of these for quite some time, but was hesitant based on some of the quality reviews I had read. However, I bought a pair of Keen Arroyo II's this summer, which has basically the same sole. I hiked all over in the Arroyo's on some really tough trails and had no issues with the soles coming apart. So as fall/winter approached I decided to get the Targhee Mids. As is typical to Keen they run a little small. I bought 11.5's and even though that's the size I have in the Arroyo's, these fit a little shorter. 12's were to big though, so 11.5's it is. I wish they were just a fraction bigger like the Arroyos. They come with a good insole and arch support, but I use Superfeet black in mine. I've used them for trail hiking and snowshoeing in addition to wearing them around town, to work, etc. They do require a little bit of break in time, although some say they're good right out of the box. I've found the grip on rocks to be excellent and they stayed warm and dry though deep snow and 15 degree temps on a recent snowshoe outing. Very solid shoe.

I bought these boots on August 16th, and the left boot has already suffered an utter failure - the plastic/rubber toe end has completely separated from the leather. Keen boots used to be exceptional quality. This is completely unacceptable. I missed the return window by 3 days.

I’ve been wearing Keen boots for many years. They are exceptionally comfortable and are the only boots I’ve found with a wide enough toe box to accommodate my broken toe. I put a lot of miles on them; a pair used to last about a year and half, but the quality is slipping and the last two pairs I got lasted less than a year, then the stitching popped loose along the side seams. Never had the toe box come loose before; guess I’ll resort to slathering it with silicone.

What happened to the KEEN quality. Soles starting falling apart quickly. Not as comfortable as previous KEENs that I have owned. Will look for a different brand next time.

I tried these as an alternative to some Salomons I had ordered. They have a larger toe box than Salomons and are definitely more comfortable. That said, they are not the same quality. I did not like the looks of the way the sole was attached to the upper. It looked like it wanted to peel back right out of the box. Would probably be okay unless wet.

The upper around the tongue area was rather thin and I would not feel comfortable in snake country. I wear gaiters but they don't cover the whole tongue. The Salomons do seem to offer better protection throughout the boot which is probably why they are so much stiffer.

Again, these are nice boots. They just wouldn't work for my needs.

No wide widths :(. I've had the same exact model but in women's. I got men's this time b/c I need a wide and couldn't find a wide in women's. Years ago I was told they don't make them in wide. A men's medium is typically a D width (women's is B), but these are still snug on the sides of my feet. I guess I need at least an E width. Since the waterproof model is more rigid, there's not a lot of give, so if you have a wider foot get a half size bigger than you normally need.

Even so, I've always loved Keens and this was a great deal for this model at $90, when it normally runs about $130. Other than that these are super durable, comfy, super waterproof, great boots. I am very hard on shoes, work outdoors, do a ton of walking in all weather. I was very impressed with my last pair, other than being too narrow. The old pair is still in great shape other than being warped from wear; nothing pulled apart! For me that's amazing for having them for 3+ years.

Excellent boots but run small. Normally I wear an 11, had to return them for 11 1/2. These boots were comfortable from the very beginning. I wore them daily doing outside work before going on a 2 week trip to the southwest. Wore them ally day for hiking and climbing around on rocks in Arizona and Utah. They are comfortable, good support, grippy on rock, and waterproof. I did not use these carrying a heavy pack, but carried a day pack on hikes in and around the Grand Canyon, Arches, and Canyonlands parks, plus traipsing around in the desert. The only improvement would be if they were a little higher over the ankle to keep dirt and sand from getting in, but no problems with ankle support. I have worn them all day, avery day since returning form my trip because they are so comfortable. Highly recommend.

Toe cap was separating within two weeks, seams widening. I think they would have fallen apart entirely within two months. Plastic cinch points seemed fragile. Very comfortable at first, unusual for boots, and they started hurting my feet around the two-week mark. This is just daily wear at the office, not 300 miles of hiking. I'm with the other reviewers -- sadly, Keen has ruined their reputation.
