I wanted a pair of these for quite some time, but was hesitant based on some of the quality reviews I had read. However, I bought a pair of Keen Arroyo II's this summer, which has basically the same sole. I hiked all over in the Arroyo's on some really tough trails and had no issues with the soles coming apart. So as fall/winter approached I decided to get the Targhee Mids. As is typical to Keen they run a little small. I bought 11.5's and even though that's the size I have in the Arroyo's, these fit a little shorter. 12's were to big though, so 11.5's it is. I wish they were just a fraction bigger like the Arroyos. They come with a good insole and arch support, but I use Superfeet black in mine. I've used them for trail hiking and snowshoeing in addition to wearing them around town, to work, etc. They do require a little bit of break in time, although some say they're good right out of the box. I've found the grip on rocks to be excellent and they stayed warm and dry though deep snow and 15 degree temps on a recent snowshoe outing. Very solid shoe.
I’ve been wearing Keen boots for many years. They are exceptionally comfortable and are the only boots I’ve found with a wide enough toe box to accommodate my broken toe. I put a lot of miles on them; a pair used to last about a year and half, but the quality is slipping and the last two pairs I got lasted less than a year, then the stitching popped loose along the side seams. Never had the toe box come loose before; guess I’ll resort to slathering it with silicone.
The upper around the tongue area was rather thin and I would not feel comfortable in snake country. I wear gaiters but they don't cover the whole tongue. The Salomons do seem to offer better protection throughout the boot which is probably why they are so much stiffer.
Again, these are nice boots. They just wouldn't work for my needs.
Even so, I've always loved Keens and this was a great deal for this model at $90, when it normally runs about $130. Other than that these are super durable, comfy, super waterproof, great boots. I am very hard on shoes, work outdoors, do a ton of walking in all weather. I was very impressed with my last pair, other than being too narrow. The old pair is still in great shape other than being warped from wear; nothing pulled apart! For me that's amazing for having them for 3+ years.
Here we are the end of July, 2016 and the soles have come loose on both shoes! This appears to be a problem with the Targhee. Now, in Keen's defense, I called them, explained the problem and even though the warranty period has expired they requested I send them a summary and pictures of both shoes. I did and a week later they issued a full credit for a new pair on their website. A company that stands behind their product! I'll see how this next pair does and report. My nephew has the same model and has more than 600 miles on his with no problems.
