The UR cost $90 including Super Saver Shipping, and arrived 4 days after ordering. Not bad!
All parts present, and it took me alone about 6 minutes to assemble. (Read the instructions so you avoid potential injuries.) (I would like to know the difference between this model (orange perimeter stripe) and the other one on Amazon for $192 (yellow perimeter stripe). Only difference in the description is the carry bag. The one I got did not include the bag.)
I got right on and did a 60 minute workout. Very nice. Not as smooth a bounce as the Bellicon, no doubt (which reportedly feels like jumping on a cloud - though I doubt any Bellicon owners have ever really jumped on a cloud). But it felt fine to me. A little spring noise, but not too bad. I was able to keep my heart rate up as high as when running. And no knee pain afterwards. So I'm happy.
Some advantages of rebounding over running:
1. Easier on joints. I can definitely feel the difference.
2. Can rebound with hand weights without adding undue extra stress on joints, a concern I had when running with hand weights (I did my workout today with two 5 lb weights). Hand weights work upper body, and provide good resistance training to build and maintain bone mass (I am on prednisone for a medical condition, so at risk of osteoporosis).
3. Can rebound at home whenever convenient; doesn't matter what the weather is outside.
4. Can watch TV, internet videos, etc. while rebounding (only an advantage if you don't watch trash).
5. If all the hype is true, it is really good for your lymphatic system, muscles, etc., maybe better than running.
6. Good for all fitness levels. Go at your own pace. Just bouncing lightly for 5 minutes a day is reportedly very helpful for those who are out of shape.
I haven't yet viewed the included DVD workouts, but have checked out several youtube videos to get an idea of the kinds of moves people do on a rebounder. It's really easy, but begin slowly, and use the handle bar, if you aren't totally comfortable from the start.
I'm always suspicious of reviews from people who just received their product (some write a review before even trying it out. What confidence!). And I respect the views of those who have months or years of experience with this equipment. If I have any trouble with the UR in the near future, I'll amend this review. But so far, 5 stars.
UPDATE: While the spring noise generally is not bad, it can easily be reduced to very quiet by spraying the springs with WD-40, or using any other type of oil. The heavier the oil, the longer it will keep the springs quiet, no doubt.
This thing is really well made and I don't feel like it is dangerous in any way, but I do like the bar on it and plan on leaving it on until I am comfortable without it. I get a little dizzy from all that bouncing and am glad to have it as a clutch if needed. The dvd starts out with exercises for first timers, basic exercises, intermediate, advanced, some for seniors, abdominal and contact. It's a very good dvd and I don't think you will be unhappy with it. Mine didn't come with a carrying case but I don't know why you would need one. It's light enough to pick up and carry around. It does take 2 people to fold it up if you want to make it smaller for storage. Those springs are heavy and tight and I wouldn't recommend folding it up unless you just have to do so. When it comes, all you have to do is fold it out and straighten the legs and it's ready to go. Putting the handle on is also easy. You need no tools whatsoever.
My final advice is to have some advil and muscle rub on hand. You are going to need it in the beginning if you start out doing too much before you are ready for it! If you order from Amazon, you will have this in 3 or 4 days. I couldn't believe how quickly it got here. Be careful if you order one other than this one because some can't handle a lot of weight. I checked on one in a local chain store and I would have been afraid to bounce on it because it looked so cheaply made. Also check the weights they will hold...this one says 300 lb capacity, some don't even give a weight. This one is great for the price, believe me.
Top reviews from other countries
The first Urban Rebounder I had was a second hand gift from a friend. I had no clue about rebounding and I left it in my backyard for two years for my son to jump on periodically. That’s two years in rain, snow, heat and sun. Someone pointed out to me what a great exercise tool I had sitting out in my yard. So I brought it inside and started using it. At that point it was about 6 years old and as I said, it had spent about 2 years outside.
The springs and fabric were still in great shape! I lost about 30 pounds of fat rebounding on this old Urban Rebounder over a 6 month period and put a lot of muscle on my legs, torso and upper arms.
After using this old rebounder for about 3 years, I decided that it would be nice to get a new one. The springs were starting to rust a bit and we’re getting noisy (remember, I kept it outside for two years and it was now about 10 years old).
At the time that I was looking for a new one, I couldn’t find any Urban Rebounders sold in Canada. I reached out to the manufacturer in the U.S and they confirmed that they didn’t ship to Canada anymore.
I was super disappointed and eventually decided to get a Bellicon Rebounder. What a huge mistake!!! Within 2 months I started to experience unusual pain in my feet which them moved into my ankles and then up into my knees, hips and eventually up to my back and shoulders. It was like the movement on the Bellicon was misaligning my posture from the foot up! I never experienced anything like that with the Urban Rebounder. I stopped rebounding altogether for about 4 months while waiting to see if my pain and the feeling of being misaligned subsided and it did. I put the Bellicon in the closet and went online and bought another spring type rebounder. Not the same as the Urban rebounder at all! I don’t know what the difference was, but I wasn’t building leg muscle like I did on the UR and it just wasn’t as comfortable.
I put that one in the closet!
At this point I noticed that the Urban Rebounder was now available on Amazon.ca, however I was worried that there had been a big change in the quality of what they were making. The reviews were not very good. People complaining about bad stitching, broken springs. I really hesitated to purchase a new one for quite some time because the reviews really did deter me. After a couple of months I was just missing rebounding so much that I decided I would take the chance. Heck, if I needed to purchase heavy duty sewing supplies to repair bad stitching, I would, just to have another UR in my life again!
The one that I bought here off of Amazon is 100% just like the older one that I had before!!! There is nothing wrong with the stitching, the springs are perfect and it’s like I reconnected with an old friend!!
I don’t know what it is about the Urban Rebounder, but I can say from a lot of experience that it’s hands down the BEST product out there in terms of comfort, durability and fitness.
On a side note I looked into the problems and pain that I was experiencing with the Bellicon. It wasn’t easy to find, but there is a blog that has been written by one of the original biomedical engineers who was involved with designing the Bellicon rebounder. At the design and testing stage they found that the rebounder that used the bungee chord for tension placed an unhealthy amount of stress on the joints. Everything that was stated in this hidden (it was like page 10 of a Google search) document by the designer corresponded to the joint pain that I was experiencing.
I’ve written this long review because I do hope that this is helpful for anyone looking for a really good rebounder. I’ve been on quite a journey with my rebounders and I haven’t found one better than this brand!
