Update: It's September 28, 2016 now and this apple slicer is still in perfect condition! We use it multiple times a week.
Update: It's August 22, 2017 and apple slicer is still going strong! It gets used almost every day.
Update: It's March 27, 2018 and it is in perfect condition with daily use.
Update: It's April 23, 2019 and the slicer is still working great! We still use it almost daily.
Update: It's October 29th, 2019 and the slicer is as sharp as always and is used multiple times a day (more kids!). We had a visitor who used it and soaked it in the sink for a few hours. We don't do this. We wash it immediately after use and leave it to dry. We occasionally run it through the dishwasher for a deep clean. I noticed the beginnings of rust in the nooks and crannies around the center after the soaking. I'll keep you posted! I'm not worried.
Update: It’s July 1, 2020 and many things are going wrong this year, but not this apple slicer. I told you I wasn’t worried. After a good clean we don’t think there was rust but it seemed more like old apple that our guest didn’t rinse off. I scrubbed and it looks as good as new. Used it today!
Update: It’s May 4th, 2021 and we’ve spent the last year homeschooling- which means lots of apples sliced for snacks. I’m wondering if I should name the apple slicer since we’ve had it longer than at least one of our kids. It’s still rust free and going strong.
Update: It’s May 25th, 2022 and I’ve got a riddle for you: What’s the opposite of a lemon?…… This apple slicer! *Ba Dum Tssshhh* See ya next year folks! (It’s still awesome)
Update: It’s October 1st, 2023 and I am eating an apple. A sliced apple. We just went apple picking so our apple slicer is getting even more use this month! It still works great.
Both of these do a very good job and feel very safe to use. We are moving pretty fast and have had no accidents with this gadget. Another woman brought in a different slicer to help out and pretty quickly we found it didn't work as well. She even ended up slicing her hand with it rather than the apple! Blood everywhere which isn't good.
The edges have remained sharp over time and I clean them by throwing them in the top rack of the dishwasher.
I am not a kitchen gadget person -- pretty much avoid buying anything that has only one use -- but this is the best gadget I own. Love it!
It has that great solid feel you want in an apple slicer while being easy to use, clean and handle.
The slicer does a great job getting through apples and you can either push hard enough and get them all the way through the core or not as hard and the apple stays together so you can peel off the slices as you want.
Seems to hold up well so far and cuts sharply.
I like the robustness of the handle, although that makes it harder to fit in the drawer I think the trade off is worth it seeing how the last slicer I had went through my unprotected thumbs as it broke and dang near impaled the thick part of my outer thumb edge. I was left with large cuts, but it could have been worse.
Needless to say, safe cutting is an important function to me and anyone I think who has been injured by cheap quality apple slicers when they break.
I put it through the ringer (coring enough apples to make 14 gallons of apple sauce) and it has held up nicely.
I bought this Calphalon Easy Grip Apple slicer because most of the reviews mentioned that it's very sharp and had held up well. I've had Calphalon products and have liked their quality and long lives. Every year I can apple butter and apple pie filling, and dehydrate apple slices, so I needed a slicer that would hold up to doing two bushels of apples at a time.
This slicer did a great job on this year's apples - it sliced even large apples quickly and neatly, although the center core part should have been slightly larger to avoid leaving any seeds in the slices. The handles are angled just right for maximum slicing power without getting fingers in the way. It washed nicely after use and stayed sharp, and none of the blades came loose the way some reviewers' slicers did.
My only complaint is that this apple slicer is huge! It's 7.5 inches long, 4.5 inches wide, and nearly 3 inches tall. Most of the size is in the rubberized plastic handles. It's too big to store in a kitchen drawer. If I had been able to see it in person, I would probably have gotten one of the flat metal ones like the one I am replacing.
This is a nice apple slicer and I think it will stand up to heavy use for years, but I'll have to find somewhere to store it other than a drawer.
