This sander is EASILY the BEST small inexpensive belt sander I have ever used!! The thing about it I like the most is it's crazy light weight. It is really light compared to any 18" sander I have ever used. It spooks me just a bit being so light. I am just hoping that does not translate into poor durability..........but it has a 2 year warranty, so what the heck. I suspect it will hold up well.
The motor is good and stout, so no issues with a lack of power. Again, especially considering it's light weight, it runs like a Mack truck!
If find the modern design feature of the narrow nose VERY handy and useful. The tool just feels sleek and productive in your hand........a very well thought-out design all around! There is NO comparison to this tool and my previous old clunky, heavy standard design belt sanders.
The only small issue I have with it is the trigger hold-down button is recessed too much for my taste. It works fine.......I just wish the button was a bit higher. No big deal though.......ya get used to it.
Great ergonomics, advanced design, powerful -- yet light in weight! As long as she holds up decently, I LOVE the light weight!
Way to go Black & Decker!!
This one is much lighter than the last one, but then my old one was about 10 years old.
This has the low profile front roller, so you can get closer to tight spots, though the handle in the front being where it is may make that a bit tricky at times.
Unlike my old belt sander the rollers on this model are slightly above the sanding pad, which is probably a good thing, but seems a bit like it unnecessarily reduces the usable sanding area. The 21 inch model may be a better choice if that's an issue.
This sander isn't really any louder than any other sander I've used so don't get rid of your ear protection.
The dust bag is greatly improved over my last sander. This slides on and off with ease, and stays in place like it should.
Both hand grips are comfortable and after using it for several hours still doesn't hurt my hand. This is a feature I enjoyed with my last B&D sander, which is one of the reasons why I sought another one.
The trigger lock is a little difficult to manipulate though it may be like that on purpose to prevent you from accidentally locking the trigger on. I liked the old way a little better in that I could very easily lock the trigger without changing my grip at all.
In general this is a great sander. I only give it 4 of 5 stars because there are a few things that slightly take away from it (all noted above). For $50 range though you can't go wrong. The 21 inch sander may be a better choice if it's your first one, but I specifically wanted 18 due to my current supply of 18 inch belts that I didn't want to waste.
As for durability. I can't really say as I just got it, but the last B&D sander I had lasted 10 years with hour and hours of use. I don't use it commercially, but it didn't exactly live an easy life either. If this sander lasts as long as my last one, it will work out to $5 per year of ownership. Can't go wrong with that.
The auto centering feature works exactly as advertised, completely removing that frustrating battle which I fought continually with my previous belt sander. It is not well suited to use upside down clamped to a bench as the top of the unit is rounded, no flat surface. I think the manual actually says not to use it this way explicitly. However the handle is ergonomic and I was easily able to hold it and use the small protruding belt surface to do fine shaping of some metal parts without wrist fatigue.
The low profile is great for getting in tight places. It certainly has a lot of power. Changing belts and emptying the bag is easy. I have used it a few hours straight and it seemed to be able to handle even more work. I am sure for the price it is not as sturdy as the ones selling for 300 dollars. But belt sanders are vary simple two gears a belt and a motor, It has a two year guarantee.
I would certainly recommend this sander
