The nitty-gritty:
First of all, it is a challenge to put together by yourself and the instructions say so. But if you're stubborn and live alone and don't wanna wait for some random person to come over and enlist them to help you, then most likely you CAN put it together because I did. It did take about an hour, I was on the floor, I did use my legs, and knees to support it while putting it together-you HAVE to because there's no way to lay it flat and connect the levels otherwise-at least I could not see a way.
I prayed that my cats, or at least the majority of them (I have a family of 5, 2 boys and 3 girls) would like it because the thought of taking it apart and shipping it back was a project I wanted NOTHING to do with.
-Once put together, it is heavy and awkward to carry.
-It does hook up to the door very easily, you just have to slide the bottom on to the door, lift it up and it pretty much snaps into place on it's own. It can be a little challenging, especially if you have carpet. It's much easier with help, but I could do it alone.
-It wouldn't work on my front door, well it went on but I couldn't shut the door, as the metal piece on the bottom ran into the metal thing on the floor so I had to put it on one of my bedroom doors, and it worked fine, and the door shuts. Your experience with your front door may be different.
There's a LOT of discussion on here about it being flimsy or wobbly or just flat out scary for the cats...Well, here's the thing-you must tighten everything very, very well, this means with each new level you put on it, you have to go back and tighten the other ones. I went back up and down it probably 4 times to make sure that it was as well built as possible. THIS TAKES TIME because of the way you have to screw each little piece, but once it's done, it's done from what I can see and I've had it since May and it's September. (I like to give it time before I review things since how things hold up is a big deal to me.)
Once it's on the door and the cats jump on it, it does wobble. It does scare the cats-AT FIRST. My cats looked like their little eyeballs were gonna pop out when they first jumped on it and it moved all over the place (not really, but it probably feels like it) they are not used to that with their big floor based cat tree, so sure it was weird for them.
Of course, my boy cats were the first on and off and on and off, feeling it out. The girls would watch and I could tell that at first they wanted nothing to do with it.
It took some time, but after a week I had 3 cats on it, then 4 and after about 3 weeks every cat was on it, they could see that no one got hurt and they were safe and soon they trusted it and began climbing up and down and they really, really love it. Not only it wobbles, but as they jump on it it will move and make some noise as well (a little scraping sound usually from the top right when they hit it) especially if they hit that thing at a full force sprint-which they ALL do now since they love chasing each other, and the climber has become a spot where they LOVE to run to during a chase.
They are constantly on it, they love being extra high up, and I know that they love being at and higher than my eye level. (I'm 5'6''). They've gotten to be MASTERS of getting from level to level (which involves body twisting and turning-you'll see!) it wasn't easy at first and they were scared but WOW, they maneuver up and down it like BEASTS! LOL I really love watching them play on it!
I honestly think that not only have they gotten used to the wobble, they LIKE that it does that and they bounce on and off of it, chase each other up and down it and I nor they are scared that it will fall.
There's really no way for it to fall, because of the way it's hooked up. It would have to literally fall apart, and I imagine that you would see that it's getting lose before it would ever fall apart.
The cats also scratch it a ton, and after months of 5 cats using their nails on the levels, it doesn't look like it and that's a surprise since it looks thin and like it'll rip and look crappy in no time, but to my amazement-it has not pulled apart at all and looks like it did day one and that's really saying something because my FIVE cats scratch on it daily with their INSANE CLAWS and they do not hold back.
Note: none of them scratch on the thick white canvas type material that is on the vertical pieces. There really isn't space for them to. Kittens could, for sure (wish I got this when the kittens were little!) but full sized cats can't really stand and claw those spots unless they are using the very bottom one, and I haven't noticed that they use it at all. But I didn't get it for them to scratch, although that is a bonus that they like scratching it.
I definitely recommend anyone with cats to get this climber-it's a little different, but I've found that different is a GOOD thing!
=) Enjoy!
Here are a few tips that will get it together well without having to redo portions of it, and if you want it very sturdy, we came up with a couple workarounds that make it a perfect fit on our apartment's cheap hollow hallway door and sturdy enough for all 4 of our cats to be jumping around on it at once...
(1) Roughly lay the whole thing out across the floor or a bed, so you can see which way you want the shelves to orient once built -- each shelf will deviate left or right off the center, and once you decide whether you want the top shelf on the right or left, it will go together relatively fast. It is helpful to have two people at the start, but you can do it alone -- it will just take a bit more foul language to get it done.
**SUGGESTION: If your door opens on the right (doorknob on right), have the top shelf deviate right or else you'll have cat tails/whiskers getting in the way of the hinges as you swing the door shut -- so do it the opposite way it's shown in the photo. It's still a potential issue this way, but with this orientation, you can watch your cat(s) as the door closes. Our cats especially like to "ride" on the platforms during door movement. Our Climber also works fine now with the door left open all the time because of the hacks below.**
(2) You'll be assembling this top to bottom as indicated on the instruction sheet, but turn the Cat Climber packaging box on its side to use as a support beneath the first three pieces, or else it's hard to hold them flush as you work the bolts, especially for the first three segments. The box is the perfect height.
(3) The head of the bolts always enter each "carpeted" shelf from below, with one flat nut abutting the bottom of the shelf, the other loosely screwed on (on the upper side of the shelf), so each nut sandwiches the shelf. Press the loose bolt assembly into position in each of the divots of shelf and the sisal backing piece, with those second nuts just barely screwed on. It will be a wobbly mess. Then, once you've lined up the pieces as flush as possible, tighten the bolt head only, ignoring the looser end nuts -- use your fingers to tighten the bolt until using the wrench makes it easier (despite its appearance, the wrench is not totally useless!) Once you get the first three pieces connected, the rest goes together a lot faster. The same principles apply the whole way through.
(4) Go back and tighten each previous set of bolts after you complete a new level of the Climber. This is key.
(5) Once on the door, we needed to wedge a bit of cardboard in the black metal grip portions at the top and bottom of the door on the reverse side, since our door is thinner than the parts provided. We just cut bits of cardboard from the box itself, wrapping each "wedge" in masking tape to keep the cardboard in a small dowel shape. These wedges fit fine and keep the Climber from moving on the door. Works a treat.
Last Hack To Make It EXTRA STURDY: This is probably not necessary for everyone, but thought I'd mention this final thing we did... For extra stability, since we knew we'd be opening and closing this door regularly (it's the only door in our space that we can use for the Climber), we used these Boston Industrial 175 Tensile Strength 14 Inch Cable Ties, 100 Pack - Natural to cinch the climber in two areas. Zipping these end to end, we made a length that perfectly circles the door, zipped it tight, then we cut off the remainders. Next we burned the nylon edges to take away the sharpness, and the "belts" now hold the Climber securely to the door and pose no risk to the cats. It also allows the door to be closed fully in the jamb, with no weirdness from something thicker. And the "natural" color is pretty unobtrusive.
MATERIALS NOTE: I wish this was made of actual wood and not pressed wood/particle board. There is a sticker on the back proclaiming that this meets some kind of industry Formaldehyde Off-Gassing guidelines, but the odor is still pretty strong-smelling straight out the box. Maybe it's the glue, maybe it's the MDF. Anyway, we let ours off-gas for a good while in the garage before putting it together. It's still not odor-free, so chemically sensitive folks (or cats with asthma)... this may irritate.
Hopefully this DIY addendum to the instruction sheet helps. It's a bit of work to get this fully functional, but SO worth it when you compare this Climber to the price of those massive carpeted cat trees -- we just have neither the space nor the budget for one of those at the moment. Had to throw our old one out as it was shredded completely. And this Climber seems to make the cats very happy in the interim. Overall, a good deal given the alternatives.
Lastly, even though it sounds like a really un-fun project, it goes faster than it sounds. And your cats will pledge a brief period of good behavior and their everlasting undying LOVE to you for expending the effort on their behalf. Worth it, I think.
Two days later(thanks Prime!) I assembled it myself. It would have been handier to have a 2nd adult to help, but the instructions say to just set it on the box it came in and that worked just as well as having someone hold it while I tightened the bolts.
Assembly took about 20 minutes. Anyone that doesn't have a three year old "helper" assisting them could probably do it much faster than I did. It easily installed on my door - hook the bottom black thing on the bottom of your door and then stretch the top black thing over the top of your door. It doesn't bow at all. In fact it is very sturdy. I do have a door that has an uneven decorative surface, so I do plan to add a couple of rubber bumpers to the areas that the climber isn't flush with the door. This is due to my door's design, not the design of the climber. Without the bumpers it vibrates a bit when jumped on. It does however wobble significantly when I close or open my door. I don't plan to open and close the door while the cats are on it, so for me, it's a non-issue.
I like that it doesn't take up much space. I like that it isn't a huge eyesore - a tower of carpet in my modern decor wouldn't have worked.
I have two 7-lb cats. They fit fine. I would imagine a very large cat might not fit as well as they do.
Top reviews from other countries
But it is well made and the kittens love it. The material covering the shelves seems to be very durable and easy to keep clean.
My friend like it so much she bought one for her cat.
