The only risk is if you drop your bike, it will break the mount. That's rider error not the mirror.
As a road biker, it gives you a great view of traffic from a long way away and it's very stable.
Works equally well on drop bars and flat bars. I've used it on both and won't buy anything else.
This is nice mirror that is easy to install and very durable. I have had two of them on road bikes with drop bars. Visibility on drop bars is pretty limited. Since it sits just below the bar end, the view is significantly taken up with legs or luggage, and you have to move you head or eyes pretty far to look at it.
COMPARED to the CatEye Road mirror (On drop road bars):
Both my wife and I have used both types of mirrors extensively. I have the CatEye mirror on my commuter and the Third Eye mirror on our tandem. My wife had the Third Eye mirror on her commuter for a couple months, but we replaced it with the CatEye mirror when it was broken in minor crash (no fault of the mirror). All of the bikes we have used them on have drop bars.
Visibility: The CatEye mirror is much easier to see in most riding positions and offers a better view past the body and any rear pannier bags due to sticking out to the side. It also has more adjustability since its position and angle can be adjusted separately. The Third Eye mirror is generally limited to one position and is closer in to the bike, often filling the view with mostly your leg or luggage. It is also lower since it sits slightly below the bar rather than beside it, meaning you have to move your eyes or head more to look at it. (Note: the view is not as much of a problem on my tandem since the bars are wider, but the CatEye would still be better)
Durability: I have no doubt that the Third Eye mirror is more durable. It has metal and rubber expansion hardware to attach to the bar end and the body is a hard plastic. There are no long plastic arms or extensions and it seems very well made. The CatEye mirror has a plastic expander with a metal screw to attach it to the bar end and the plastic in general seems less tough. The extension arm looks like it could be broken easily, but I have found that it actually just knocked out of place and pivots rather than snapping. Overall, the Third Eye is simpler and tougher, but I haven't found the CatEye mirror to be too flimsy or breakable, either. Both have been secure and haven't shown signs of falling out of the bars.
Vibration: Honestly, I have not had trouble with either of them vibrating too much to make out an image. They are pretty comparable in terms of vibration (i.e. they are fine).
Stability: Third Eye wins this one, but not by a lot. The CatEye mirror, due to its somewhat flimsier construction, cannot be tightened down quite as much as the Third Eye. Also, the fact that the CatEye mirror is mounted on an extension arm makes it more prone to jostling. Overall, the Third Eye mirror is more stable, but the CatEye mirror has an acceptable level of stablility, only needing adjustment after I hit a particularly hard bump (e.g. a rough railroad crossing).
Conclusion: The CatEye mirror, even though it is slightly less stable and durable, makes up for it in improved visibility. If you are mounting a mirror on the end of drop bars, I highly recommend the CatEye over the Third Eye. However, if you are using the mirror on the end of straight bars or some other setup, then the visibility is not as much of a factor and the Third Eye is the better choice.
I first put one on my Trek hybrid and was very pleased,
so much that I bought a second one for my road bike.
Being a truck driver I tend to place a lot of importance on mirrors.
The quality of the glass, lack of distortion, and steadiness are very important to me.
This mirror offers all of that, and better than any other I've tried.
On the straight handbars it is located great, and sits out from the end of the bar grip enough that my hands don't interfere.
I didn't think I''d like it on the road bike because of the location the mirror would end up in.
I see many road bikes with the smaller streamlined mirrors, so I bought one of those but didn't like how small the mirror was.
It made it difficult to really see what was coming up behind you, how close it actually was, and how fast it was coming.
So I bought a second mirror that was round and bigger, and set out to the side of the handlebar end, only to have that one get in the way of my hands when down in the drop portion of the bar.
Out of desperation I took this mirror off my hybrid because I needed something for a ride that day, and it works great.
When I'm grabbing the end of the bar in the drops my forearm may block the mirror just a bit, but if I'm keeping my elbows in tight it's ok.
Nice size allows me to see what is coming and how fast, how far behind me it is. Remains stable for a good clear view.
Easy to mount, comes with 2 sizes of rubber knurled inserts. You choose which size best fits the inside of your bar end, tighten it up a little before inserting so that it slides in fully but offers a little resistance, and once pushed all the way in just rotate it by hand to tighten completely.
You do need to make sure you tighten it completely, or it will shake around when you are on bumpy roads and possibly fall out.
I noticed several negative reviews that mention vibration and falling out. It needs to be tightened completely or that will happen.
