Important information
Properly training your pet to use a ramp is essential for success. Prior to first use, allow your pet to become familiar with the ramp. Train him or her to walk on the ramp flat before using it in an inclined position. Offer treats or a favorite toy to your pet from the opposite end of the ramp. Offer reassurance and give your pet plenty of praise as he or she walks on it. As your pet becomes more comfortable, incline the ramp in small increments and continue training before using with a vehicle or other higher surface. Please contact PetSafe Customer Care at 1-800-845-3274 with any questions or concerns regarding the use of your pet ramp.

I have two Labradors. My oldest is 14 years old and weighs 79 lbs. My youngest is 4 years old and weighs 84 lbs. My oldest is still very agile for her age but my youngest has knee problems. I bought this ramp for her. She can not jump into my Kia Soul and does not like being lifted in. I did a lot of research when I decided to purchase a ramp. I read every review on every style of ramp listed on Amazon. I'm not exaggerating...it took several days. By the way "My Dog Hated It" isn't a helpful review. Of course your dog hated it. My dogs hated it too until I paid them to like it. (Paid with treats)
So here's some pros, cons and thoughts about this ramp.
Pros
1. Its was the widest one I could find, so my chunky lab with wide set shoulders had plenty of run to walk on it.
2. It was is sturdy enough for both dogs to be on it at the same time. (84lbs + 79lbs = 163 lbs). It looks to be well made and it doesn't bow or flex when they are on it.
3. The ramp is long enough to make the incline to the car reasonable. My youngest lab is not adventurous at all so a steep incline would have been problematic.
4. Its got a side handle for easy carrying.
5. The sand paper like texture provide a nice non-slip surface. I did not find it to be too rough as some had mentioned in their reviews.
Cons
1. Its a bit long when its at its shortest length. It DOES fit into my Kia Soul with the back seats down but it takes up more room then I like. I wished it was a tri-fold.
2. The Sand Paper like texture shows nail scratches easily. It is a dog ramp and not a fashion runway so I should keep that in perspective.
3. It doesn't have a locking mechanism for when it's slid closed. If I were the designer I would have added that. It's not a deal breaker for me but I could see it being for others.
Some additional thoughts..
1. I can't stress enough that most dogs will need to be trained to use it or any ramp. I followed the advise of another reviewer and started with laying it flat on the ground fully extend. I left it out so they could sniff it and get use to it. Then I used treats to get them to walk across it. Once they were OK walk across it, I raised it a couple of inches. Using treats, I had them walk across it some more. Once they were comfortable I raised it again. It took four 30 minute sessions to get them to use it on our back steps. I left it on our back steps for 3 days and then stated training to use it with the car. It worked.
2. It weighs 17lbs. It slides easily when you need to stow it away but it has some weight to it and its a bit awkward. I can lift it in and out of my car without any trouble while holding onto my dogs leashes but I am fairly strong. Also I am use to putting larger heavier items in the back of my car. With that said, I still worked with my dogs on sitting and waiting for me to put it away before getting up and moving around. I didn't want them pulling on their leashes while I am manhandling it into the back of the car.

I keep the ramp inside my Ford Excursion just behind the front seats. I always have the rear seats down and removed for hauling gear. The ramp fits fine width wise. I am able to pull it out the driver's rear side door but do have to be careful not to hit the inside panel of the door. I lay the top end that is slightly dovetailed on top of my homemade running boards. This leaves over 2' that he still has to ascend after using the ramp.
So far I haven't needed to extend the ramp. If we were using the rear cargo doors as the point of ingress he would need the ramp fully extended. The truck sits high with airbags and 37" tires. Collapsed the ramp is just barely short enough to use if parked just right next to another vehicle. That makes him ascend from the side of the ramp instead of heading up straight. It took weeks for him to stop trying to ascend from the side. He now knows to walk up straight.
If he gets a little bit of a running start he can usually make it all the way into the truck by himself. Otherwise I have to give him a little push to help him hop his hind legs up the last couple feet. During rare times when he feels like he used to he prefers to bypass the ramp and jump int the truck on his own.
The grip on the climbing portion of the ramp is very rough with a tight, sharply bumpy pattern. It works well and so far is fairly durable. His claws leave marks where he scratches but I am not concerned that it might rip. It is industrial strength. To clean it would probably require a strong sprayer. It collects all debris from his paws. Strangely no fur sticks to it. I use hand sanitizer after handling it.
Even though the construction of this ramp is aluminum it is very stout and very heavy. It took me a few tries to figure out how to handle it in a way that didn't let it telescope and hit me in the legs or anywhere else. There is a strap that has a snap to hold it together. You do not want it to accidentally slide and hit anything as it will cause damage.
I am happy with this purchase and almost always keep it in my truck. I often have to carry guitars in the back of my truck exactly where I store the ramp. This is a concern because the grip is so rough it will easily tear up a soft or leather case. If hauling groceries or other objects you don't want sliding around in your vehicle, this will do a good job of keeping your gear in place.
As previously mentioned Mr. Muffins is about 85 lbs and 27" at the shoulder. He is a Malamut. He used to be very athletic, could clear a 4' fence but no longer gets out very often. He is hesitant to use the ramp and has fallen off a few times, only due to his hesitations and getting a weak running start, or coming at an awkward angle. We are almost always parked on a hill when loading. The ramp is wide enough that it is very stable. Even if the bottom of it is rocking on uneven ground, it doesn't bother him at all, which is strange. He will still often howl in protest about using the ramp. He does not yet ever try ascending by himself. He needs me to stand beside him while he climbs, I think because he is scared of falling again. Perhaps sometime when we are on level ground with lots of space I will train him to use it by himself. He doesn't need the ramp when getting out, he still jumps down to the running boards, then down to the ground.
There were no other telescoping pet ramps I could find when shopping that were this sturdy. While the weight is a huge tradeoff I have no worries of the ramp failing. I read too many reviews of other ramps with dogs similar and smaller in side that had bowed, caved, and broken under the weight. This ramp is so sturdy I wouldn't hesitate to use it for light to medium duty loading chores of equipment using a narrow dolly.
Being aluminum there is still no rust after months of use. We have used it many times in the rain and there has been no issues of him slipping. The only times he slips and scratches the track is when the angle is too steep. He tries to dig in with his claws instead of using his paws so he loses too much surface area pressure if at too much of an angle. I am happy with this purchase. The puppy isn't crazy about it but since I can no longer pick him up by hand, this let's me still take him to his favorite places.
