Product Description
Counter Assault Bear Deterrent has been an effective means of non-lethal protection from wildlife and bears since it was first developed, in conjunction with the University Montana, in the early 1980s. Dr. Charles Jonkel and Carrie Hunt of the University of Montana Border Grizzly Project generated the scientific data that proved Counter Assault’s proprietary formula and delivery system successfully deterred bears from aggressive encounters in a non-lethal manner, and it has remained an integral part of many explorers' kits since.
Counter Assault began business operations in Missoula, Montana to market a bear spray in 1986. Since that time, National Park rangers, hunters, hikers, guides and others have carried the spray in the backcountry. Counter Assault Bear Deterrent is used worldwide by outdoor professionals, enthusiasts, and by Federal and State wildlife agencies. Because Counter Assault Bear Deterrent is lightweight, it is easily carried on the belt of a hunter, fisherman, or backpacker.
In June of 1998, Counter Assault became the first bear deterrent pepper spray to achieve US Environmental Protection Agency registration. Then, in December of that same year, the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, a group consisting of various US Forest Service, state agencies, and other government personnel, awarded Counter Assault the 1998 Grizzly Bear Stewardship Award for significant participation in the research and development of bear deterrent pepper spray. Counter Assault has continued their excellence in development and research and boasts bear deterrents that have the longest ranges for their product sizes. Counter Assault is an established leader in the bear spray industry with quality products that keep people and their families safe. Counter Assault bear spray is not only grizzly tough, it is POLAR BEAR tough.

Recipient of the 1998 Grizzly Bear Stewardship AwardCounter Assault received the 1998 Grizzly Bear Stewardship Award, presented by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, in recognition for the research and development of bear spray conducted in conjunction with The University of Montana Border Grizzly Project from 1980-1982. |
Every Second MattersBears can run up to 30 mph (44 feet per second), which means that you don’t have time to mess around and certainly won't win a footrace. No matter how strong you are, a bear will always be stronger, so getting into a fight with one is not optimal either. Studies have shown that using bear spray results in a 92% chance of an attack being deterred, saving your life and/or the bear's life as well. |
Meets the EPA Requirements S.N.A.P. CertificationCounter Assault not only cares about their customers and the bears they may encounter, we also care about the environment. The bear spray meets all EPA requirements for the Significant New Alternative Policy (S.N.A.P) of the clean air act regarding ozone depleting substances. The bear spray can be brought anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. |

I felt that the holster that came with the product was too tight to remove the product easily, so I sewed a canvas holster for it. It's just a pocket hanging on a cord around my waist. I just leave the original holster on, with the safety protector strip locked in place (makes me feel more secure that I won't accidentally push the safety back). Then the whole unit with original holster on goes into my looser canvas holster so I can pull it out fast if need be. I did not want to shoot it from my hip because of possibly getting in the cloud of spray myself. I want to hold the can as far from my body as possible if I have to use it. If I am in an area where I know I may have trouble, I carry the can, still in the original holster, in my right hand, with the safety protector strip disengaged and wrapped around the can, so I can pull the safety back and spray quickly if I need to. I do try to check where the wind is blowing from often each day, and to remain alert and aware of my surroundings. I need to attach a cord to the bottom of my canvas holster I made, and tie the cord around my thigh so that the can is quick to remove without reaching around with my other hand to hold the bottom of the canvas holster down when the can is removed.
I did practice pulling the safety back and replacing it, and had no problem with it. I am such a weenie, though, that it took me three days after receiving the product, and a conversation with the Counter Assault customer service department (they are VERY nice), before I got up the courage to practice removing the safety. I was afraid I would spray myself. There was no problem at all, though.
There is one more thing I might mention. I store my spray, when not carrying it, in a metal can with a top that fits tightly, inside a kitchen cabinet away from the stove. I am going to purchase a small cooler to put the metal can with the spray in it inside of, still keeping it in a closed kitchen cabinet. You can't store this stuff in a closed car where any heat at all can build up, 'cause it will explode. In the event of a house fire, you don't want to be incapacitated by exploding pepper spray if you are trying to escape, so it would be wise to rig up some way to keep this stuff cool if anything happens. I have not seen this discussed anywhere, but it is certainly something to consider. Enough said.
I am happy to find this product which helps me to have a little peace of mind for a reasonable price.
Easy to use, tested a 10.2 ounce can in backyard... about 2 second burst at a shoulder level went at least 25 feet with a slight crossing wind created a small cloud... could feel the strength of the pepper spray in nasal passages. This is powerful stuff. Must be really careful with the wind. Let’s see what the bears think... A well thought out and easy to point firing mechanism and plastic safety clip. Holster is functional...
The can I am replacing, the can I originally gave the review for, was purchased in 2014 and had an expiration of 2018...4 years.
I will still stand by the product itself, just not happy with losing a year on the expiration date. But I'll still give it four stars since the product does work and can save you from some serious harm.
Glad to say I didn't have to use it on this last trip to WY. But I was ready. Used it and UDAP before and they both work.
I bought this for Yellowstone, but in hindsight I should not have. If you go to the backcountry office in any of the Yellowstone visitor centers, the rangers will loan you one for free under the condition that you bring it back to one of the backcountry offices. In the unlikely case that they're out, you can rent bear sprays there from various places for less than the cost of this. And if that fails too, you can still buy one there (although they cost a bit more there than on Amazon).
