We got this blanket so that we could pre-warm our bed on cold nights (we live in Houston so maybe our definition of cold doesn't match yours). For that it works great. I should note that this isn't a heating pad. If you've owned a heating pad and you're expecting that level of heating, you're going to be disappointed. For instance, we set ours to max heat an hour or so before bed and when we slide into bed, it will have warmed to the point that it feels very warm but not hot. It's just a bit warmer than getting into a bed that someone has been sleeping in. Like when my wife is sick with a fever and I hop into bed with her; it's close to that.
That being said, I find that I need to turn it down to around a 3 (it goes form 1 to 10) when I actually go to sleep so that I don't wake up in a puddle of sweat (I must get hot at night because my wife doesn't have this problem). Even so, in the morning it will be plenty warm after a cold night at that setting.
The two sides do heat separately and have their own controls. This is great because my wife tends to keep her side a bit warmer than mine. You really can feel the difference too so I like this feature a lot.
It only heats one side (the side facing down) so you can't lay on top of it and expect to feel anything. I keep trying to show our cat that the warm parts are on the underside but he's not having it. So there he is like an idiot laying on top of it. That brings up a good point: on it's own, this is still a very comfortable, quality blanket.
I couldn't be happier with this product. The only downside is that it does take a while to heat up (we like to give it at least 2 hours). If you try to wait just 30 minutes before getting into bed, you may not notice much.
Would buy again in a heartbeat. Arrived as expected and on-time as usual.

One reason why these blankets fail early
This is a review of a blanket about four years old which has died. Many reviewers have commented on short life, and I suspect like mine, their blankets died gradually. The problem here is in the connectors to the blanket. The Molex-like plug contacts do not mate securely and the slight resistance causes the connectors to heat. On one side a wire heated and oxidized through, falling out of the connector, explaining why that side fails to heat at all. The wiring is very fine gauge and it doesn't take much to destroy it. At present, one of the leads to the other connector is discolored, and the voltage drop across the connector is probably the reason that side will heat very slowly and no longer reaches the nice preheat temperature I enjoyed. In my view, everyone who owns one of these blankets should check the connectors periodically, and monitor the temperatures there. If the manufacturer would address that problem it would be a perfect blanket. As it stands, some of these are going to continue to fail prematurely, and right now I'm unhappy with the idea of a hot connector under bedding at the foot of the bed.UPDATE. Because I really like the blanket I ordered a new one with the intention of monitoring the connectors closely and treating them with kid gloves. These connectors seem to have been improved (at least they are different), so I'm giving the benefit of the doubt and giving it four stars so far.
