AKG Varimotion MembraneThe heart of any headphone or microphone is the diaphragm. It’s the component that handles the challenging task of turning its mechanical motion into the electrical signal that delivers the sound. Varimotion from AKG is a unique technology that allows the production of a diaphragm whose thickness varies along its diameter. With the help of this innovative diaphragm, AKG is able to precisely tune the capsule for the highest level of performance to provide powerful, accurate, clear and feedback-free sound. |
AKG Flat-Wire Voice Coil TechnologyAKG’s flat-wire voice coil technology is what gives the K702 reference headphones the transient response that delivers amazingly accurate and spacious sound. Conventional voice coils use round wires, but AKG’s flat-wire technology allows the company to build very rigid yet lightweight voice coils, which improves the pulse response. Furthermore, using flat wires provides higher packing density in the magnetic gap, which increases the efficiency because less power is lost to heat. |
Phenomenal Comfort for Complete ImmersionNobody wants to endure pain or discomfort when working in the studio or listening to music. That's why the K702 Headphones were built to fit you. Unique 3D-Form ear pads and an ergonomic padded genuine-leather headband ensure that you remain pain-free and comfortable, even during the longest of sessions. The ear pads feature an innovative gel construction with a super-soft lining. Plus, with the self-adjusting headband design, you'll never have to worry about fiddling with positions ever again. |

Some cons I have that don't really affect my review:
- What happened to the 20 ft cord? I can't seem to find it, but it's not a gripe bc I use 5mm extension cables anyway.
- VERY quiet. I almost always keep my computer volume at max for these, and sometimes I'll use 3rd party programs to boost it even further if I'm watching an extra quiet movie.
- You do need to break these in. I'd blast loud music through these whenever you're not using them for the first few weeks, since the audio quality doesn't actually shine until you've used these a while.
- Not comfortable. It's getting better, since this current model doesn't pinch my temples like the AKG Q701 did. However, don't expect the lush feel you'd get from leather or memory foam earpads. However, you can switch out these pads for better ones if you choose to. For my head shape, I find that wearing these for hours on end don't really cause any trouble.
- Leaks noise like a speaker--this is important for the soundstage aspect of these headphones, so I don't really consider this a con. I'm buying these headphones for the SOUND, not the portability or privacy. However, if you listen to anything other than a quiet volume, chances are the person next to you can hear it, too. So remember that before you blast something inappropriate in the presence of others. It's no problem in the privacy of your own room, though.
- Lacks fancier features like Bluetooth or noise cancellation. If you use this for gaming, expect it to be bare bones. There's not microphone attached, no Bluetooth compatibility or wireless function. There aren't wireless verisons of this since it relies on its cord for some of the sound quality.
- Finally, THE WIRING INTERNALLY IS FRAGILE. THIS IS IMPORTANT IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO SOLDER. Every single pair of headphones from AKG I've owned CONSISTENTLY fails after about a year. This personally isn't enough for me to knock off a star since I know how to solder, and I usually just go in and repair it. It's honestly pretty easy to learn how to solder, and these headphones are pretty easy to take apart if you have the right tools. The quality of sound doesn't suffer post-repair, either. It's just that the thin wires in the actual headphones (not the cord) tend to come loose after about a year if you're not OCD about handling it. I drop my headphones pretty regularly and kinda just dump them on my table after use. I'm not gentle with them at all. Regular wear and tear generally ends up knocking a wire loose. HOWEVER, if you're not tech-savvy or just plain don't own a soldering kit, EXPECT this to stop working after about a year or two, which SUCKS. Repairs are about the price of buying a used version, so I'd recommend either DIY or straight up replacement.
Okay, after that huge warning, here are the pros and why I don't really use anything else:
- The sound. I am PHYSICALLY soothed by certain noises, and these headphones bring out all the best (and worst) properties of every noise. It doesn't buy into the bass fad, and instead has very balanced sound that doesn't prioritize any frequency. You can still hear the bass! Yes! But you can't expect it to shake your body or anything. You're just listening to the true sound of every audio track. It's caused me to stop pirating music (seriously!) because I can actually hear differences in compression, and it's just not worth sorting through files anymore to find the highest quality version of what you want to listen to.
- Oh my god the soundstage. The soundstage is vast, like you can feel the sound extending farther outside your head than the sound of all the other headphones I've tried or owned. If I plopped in some Apple buds right after listening to music with these, I almost feel claustrophobic with how limited of a space earbud sound occupies. Am I sounding crazy? I'm not even talking about the quality of it, just how far of a physical space the soundstage seems to occupy. The soundstage in these headphones is like actually having a small band play right next to you. It's fantastic. Gamers, rest assured. These will not only help you hear where other players are, I find that I can actually hear how far they are and even their exact POSITION up to a certain extent JUST from their in-game footsteps. I can tell if a player's above me, below me, in front of me, or even behind me--they all sound different and these headphones really help bring out the differences in those sounds. I honestly kind of feel cheap whenever I guess correctly someone's exact position--wallhacks, anyone? Seriously--I don't get the same precision in other headphones. The soundstage is just too small for me to accurately pinpoint distance.
- Easy to repair. The biggest issue with these headphones that I've mentioned above is easily cured in like half an hour with these. If you get an issue with the cord (which is usually just a problem with the cord's connection to the headphones), it's a lot harder to fix, but certainly not impossible. There's a lot of forums with people who mod these headphones, too, which isn't surprising since these can ostensibly just pop open with the help of a needle. This is a great advantage if you're pretty good with technology, since you can always mod these headphones for louder bass (if you love that shake), Bluetooth compatibility, and more, essentially negating all the drawbacks. I know virtually nothing about this stuff past just soldering wires, but even then when my cord failed, I just melted off the part where the cord was supposed to attach and instead resoldered the cord directly to the internal wiring. Sure, I can no longer detach my cord, but I never really did that, anyway. Now my headphones can last another few years.
- The price. These are reference headphones, and the price (kinda) follows suit. I say kinda because these have actually 1. dropped in price over the years (the old Q701s were about 500 MSRP so I used to just get them used) so now I can afford a new one since they're only about 200-300 now, and 2. this isn't really that bad of a price for THE headphones of your life--considering that every other high-end pair of headphones is around the same price range (think Bose or Beats, which don't nearly have the same sound quality). The 1k pair is obviously not for someone like me, who doesn't professionally work in music, but the $300 pair has jaw-dropping quality that makes me surprised it's not already the highest quality pair.
Every pair of headphones has its upsides and downsides. I make sound quality and price my only priorities, so these are the best for me, personally.
On the first point, although plugging them into my iPod (as expected) did not produce spectacular results, they performed just fine and definitely better than what many reviews would have you believe. I have a pair of Shure's SE 535, and although I did not do a side by side A to B comparison (the Shures broke in less than a month of use and I sent them back to the company for service), I do not recall a striking difference in the sound quality between the two when playing out of the iPod. Although, for instance, the iPod driven Shures had somewhat better bass, the AKGs make up for it in other respects (i.e. sound stage). However, it was when I plugged the AKGs into my Onkyo (not super fancy, mid-class) receiver and listened to CDs and a records, they absolutely sung! The sound stage is nice and wide. You can really pinpoint the location of every sound in 3D space. When listening to vocals, it actually feels like you can reach out and touch the singer. Every sound is crisp, precise and easily distinguished from all others. For instance, you can pick out the separate layers of vocal harmonies, that can often be muddled and fused will lesser audio equipment. I should also add that when visiting my parents, I plugged these cans into my parent's Sony "space-age" looking, CD and tape (!) playing stereo, which was bought at Target or Walmart in late 1990's/early 2000's, is now relegated to the basement. When playing a CD, considering the source, the headphones blew me away! Although I don't doubt that a headphone amp would be nice, it is not absolutely necessary to realize the many benefits of these headphones.
On the second point, regarding the bass, I could not disagree more. Unless you like your bass so heavy that it muddles everything else, these headphones are for you. The bass is controlled, punchy and tight, and does not muddle the other frequencies. It is very natural. I listen to tons of electronic music (electronica, glitch, techno, minimal, house-- you name it -- all of which is considered bass driven), and I think these headphones are perfect. In fact they give you a perfect balance of bass, nicely transparent mids and crisp highs. I've listened to Senns HD 650 (which I do like) but actually prefer these, due to that clarity. BTW, other types of music sound great as well with these headphones. Besides electronic, I also listen to classical music, opera, rock, and jazz, and I think that they sound great with all. For a while, these cans will definitely be my go to headphones for everything I listen to.
Lastly, although it is widely publicized that these cans have a very long burn-in period, I was actually impressed with the out-of-the-box sound. I did not do a dedicated burn-in as some do (leaving them to play 24/7 somewhere in a closet). Rather, I just kept on having dedicated listening session every few days, and noticed them opening up right in front of my eyes. I love them now, but I am really looking forward to hearing what they sound like in few more months!
Overall, if you are dissuaded from getting these cans due to issues some have called out online, take those criticisms with a grain of salt. If you like detailed and precise reproduction of what your CDs, records and digital files really sound like, try these cans. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Top reviews from other countries
OK, the unboxing experience, mine arrived in a nice black box inside a simple cardboard sleeve. There were some inspirational words on 2 flaps (can't remember what they are, and couldn't care less), then the headphones are in a plastic bag, with the detachable cable tucked away inside another plastic bag. There, they arrived in a box: sorted. If they are truly aimed at professionals I am reminded how Canon pack their expensive semi pro video equipment. It comes in a plain brown cardboard box that you throw in the recycling. Just put it In a box!
First visual impression, they are mighty ugly objects. Think two padded pan lids held together with a wire coat hanger. Those ear pads are massive. You could happily pop them on a baby elephant. Yep, there's a lot of plastic, but you could say the same for Grado cans too. The mini XLR plug happily slots into place with a gentle click, and stays put. The gold plated jack plug and 6.3mm adapter look to be well made, and are held together with a screw thread. The cord is thick enough for the job, nonmicrophony if you move it about. A 10 foot(ISH) length is ideal for moving around at a mixing desk or sitting near your hi fi relaxing. The cable can be easily changed for shorter ones at a variety of prices. The headband is supposed to be leather, but there's no residual smell. OK, they are not the most beautiful design, but, hey, are you going to sit and stare at them or put them on and listen to music?
Comfort, well you can wear them for hours without discomfort. The velour ear pads don't seem to get warm like plastic or leather ones. I've not experienced the dreaded sweaty ears. You can listen to a whole CD without the dreaded headphones itch. They might look huge (and ridiculous, but the suspension system keeps them happily floating on your head. I've not found any discomfort from the headband at all, I don't even notice it. If the ear pads wear out, replacements can be purchased.
Let's address one issue that people have with these cans. They are open backed. That means noise can pass through them. They really are transparent. I mean, with a really quiet music passage you can hear background noise as quiet as the water in your central heating radiators. If someone is having a conversation whilst you are in a listening session you will hear it. I tested this with a few tracks off Vangelis' Alexandra. You could hear background noise despite all those orchestral crescendos. They are far from ideal for isolating yourself or commuting. They are great for their intended purpose however. For me, they were bought so that I can listen to music at high volume late at night without thudding bass disturbing the neighbours. With that intended purpose they are excellent.
How do they sound with a phone, well a bit quiet. The same goes for the headphone jack on my Marantz CD player. They really need a little bit more output. You need to crank them up a few notches compared to other 'phones. The downside to this is that you need to careful of this if you have an amp that switches straight to speakers once the headphones are unplugged. Bit of a shock as the higher volume burst out of the room speakers. My Marantz PM6007 amp and MR611 all in one happily drive them though.
OK, the sound quality. If the track has plenty of bass, you will hear it, if it doesn't, they faithfully reproduce it. You can tell what that bass note is coming from, not some deep nondescript rumble. Mid range is excellent. As others have mentioned, the positioning of instruments in the sound stage is precise. Choir's seem made up of individuals, not a collection of voices smeared around.Treble: some have used words like harsh or brittle. I would say that percussion has a sharp and precise attack with incredible detail. Lengthy listening sessions are fatigue free. You can drive them to high volumes with no perceptible distortion. Female vocals, classical, acoustic guitars etc are all silky on them.
Sound stage. Well, plenty of separation. An album like Suzanne Vega's 99.9F gives that a good demonstration as instruments and vocals hurtle around with high energy.
In short, if you are in Europe or the UK where they have reduced dramatically in price recently consider them as a great step up from budget headphones for the sound quality if listening to quality hi fi with good recordings at home. Probably not good for vinyl, as you will hear all that crackle and hiss, they are really goodxatcshowing that up.
