We chose the Hugo Elite model because it offered seat height adjustment (a feature we're using to obtain a more suitable lower seat height) and the saddle bag (which we thought might be handy some day -- and which is now being used to stow a folding cane).
This walker is for my just-turned-90 petite mother who was beginning to get too wobbly with just a regular cane when going to doctors and such on her own (when shopping, she loves, instead, using shopping carts for stability with the occasional assist of her cane). She has taken to Hugo and her mobility is vastly enhanced. The under-seat storage is perfect for her large purse.
What's more, she is able to get Hugo folded and into and out of the rear seat of her 4-door sedan on her own (she remains capably self-sufficient)!! Hugo sits on his side on the car seat, handlebars facing forward.
Hugo has one feature we've found to be important that most other rolling walkers seem not to have -- a secure snap lock to keep Hugo folded. He locks automatically when he is folded; you pull a knob for just the second you start to unfold him.
Other features. The "Pacific Blue" color is gorgeous. Hugo feels sturdy and durable. The wheels are full-sized (smaller wheels on other brands don't work as smoothly). The Hugo company believes in progressively improving Hugo. The picture on this website (as of this writing) is of an earlier version. The wheels have since been improved. Our version had chunky rubber wheels on the rear (instead of plastic, as in the front) which work a lot better with the brakes.
There was one issue with assembly of Hugo which served to demonstrate that customer service is outstanding. As shipped, Hugo would have been fine if we'd used him with the seat in the higher setting. However, an inner leg tube needs to slide further into the outer leg tube to yield the lower seating and that wasn't possible in one of the legs as shipped. Customer service was exceedingly considerate and helpful in resolving this issue as rapidly as possible (ultimately taking the part from one of their new samples since parts for this newest version were not yet fully stocked).
Since using Hugo, we've had great pride of ownership and have recommended Hugo to the numerous folks who have taken notice of him and inquired.
We have absolutely no connection to the company but are customers and users who are delighted at this superior product, priced here very reasonably, which has substantially improved my mother's life!
By the way, in researching rolling walkers we discovered that local medical equipment stores, in general, have prices for such equipment which are often vastly higher than the prices charged on Amazon.
Thus I reach the only conclusion possible: Hugo is the one to buy (and do so here on Amazon)!
=====Addendum:
Based on our experiences using Hugo, I would like to add a CAUTIONARY warning. There is a risk of the user tumbling forward with Hugo to the ground (probably also the case with many/most other rolling walkers). The user must never STRETCH forward while using Hugo to reach something (like to open a door). The risk becomes large that both will tumble uncontrollably forward. Best to position Hugo such that one is reaching to the side.
I would like to make one other usage recommendation: it helps considerably to LOCK the brakes before folding Hugo and keeping the brakes LOCKED until completely opening Hugo (these practices help keep Hugo from rolling out while doing the folding and unfolding). (The brakes should also always be locked for safety before using Hugo as a fixed point to hold onto while either circling around him or transitioning to sit down or stand up.) Another detail: we don't make a point of =completely= folding Hugo before sliding him into the back seat; the final folding to the point of getting the frame to click shut can happen once he is getting positioned on the car seat.
In my earlier writing I forgot to also point out another advantage of Hugo compared to other rolling walkers: the fact that the under-seat storage is made of solid material, not the wire mesh of some other models. If you're putting a purse in this storage, you don't want to risk things falling out through wire mesh and becoming lost!
This is the fifth rolling walker I have purchased over 20-years. Each time there have been subtle changes to the stability of the rollerator but also to some conveniences I really liked & wish they had kept (SEE BELOW). That said, this is an AWESOME walker!! Used daily inside & out; on buses, subways & autos; to shopping, restaurants and everywhere in between. Strong & very well made. Stable when used for even the tallest or heaviest individuals. It rolls easily while still giving support. It has two (2) hand brakes for more control while walking, sudden stopping, or slowing while navigating an incline. Handle bars adjust for an individual's height. Included is a comfortable seat should there be a need to rest or while waiting without having to stand. The seat can also serve as a place for a shopping tote while shopping, for a plate or food tray, or place purchases & boxes too large for the under seat storage area. Unlike some similar products, this one includes two (2) storage areas - under the seat & a removable handlebar bag. It also has a cushioned back rest bar for support while utilizing the fold down seat.
First, the UPGRADES:
* Brake cable system appears better.
* Wheels seem a bit wider for better stability
* Has a red pull out pin on one side to enable folding for additional safety **
* Each wheel stem has an additional snap on safety pin should the single stem pin fail
Changes DELETED:
* The two longer wheels (when folded down) no longer have a pull pin to allow folding inward of the wheels cutting down on the length of folded walker to fit into smaller car trunks
* Deleted the velvo "pocket" under the fold down seat for securing smaller items such as an ID or small wallet - even with walker folded
* Deleted both side zippered pockets inside the storage area under the seat which secured (even when folded) small tools, keys, lube for wheels, or other items that now fall out of the storage area if the walker is folded
* Deleted the wheel height adjustment. Now the wheel stems have only one hole for attachment to the frame which eliminated a second adjustable height option setting. So for taller individuals, the seat may be too low for some individuals to comfortably get up from or even unable to use the seat at all.
Things that STILL NEED IMPROVEMENT:
** Folding handle mechanism is NOT easy to use for shorter individuals. There used to be a short strap at the bottom of the storage area under the seat which you pulled up to fold walker. NOW there is a VERY LONG strap attached to the outside of the storage area, making it difficult for shorter people to pull all the way up (over head almost) to close. Need to go back to a shorter pull up strap.
** The red pin release needs to be pulled as you lift up on the long strap. This requires using one hand to pull out the pin, while simultaneously using the other hand to lift the strap up to close. This takes a stable walker with 4-wheels on the ground to only 2, causing the walker to roll away from you if you not strong enough to literally hold the walker upright or it immediately falls to the ground when in locks folded.
** After folding there is no way for the walker to "stand" vertically since only two wheels are now in contact with the ground making leaning it against a wall impossible without it falling. If you don't have the space to lay it down flat (horizontally) while folded, it actually takes up less space to leave it unfolded.
** The brake cables still are on the "outside" of the frame. These "loops" of cable by the hand grips (on both sides of the walker) allow them to catch on things while moving. This ultimately brakes the hand brake cables. (Every single previous walker this has happened to us. So trying to avoid this happening this time around, I installed velcro straps to the cable & handlebars eliminating the cable from sticking out to catch on anything).
** Stress importance of correct hand grip height. When adjusted correctly, the top of hand grip should be lined up with individual's knuckle bump on wrist. If set too low, it causes an individual to walk hunched over. If set too high, it eliminates support needed if a person loses their balance.
** Need to be able to adjust seat height. Either bring back the wheel stem height adjustments or add an adjustment option to the frame itself for the option to raise the seat to a comfortable height for both individuals who are taller or for those to need it higher than normal to assist them to move from sitting to standing.
** Add zipper closure to handlebar bags outer pocket. Currently, the large center pocket is secured only with two snaps allowing smaller items to fall out of the bag when walker is folded or moved in or out of the trunk. Since both under seat storage area zipper pockets were removed, the handle bar bag could be used instead if more secure. I have only used the handlebar bag large outer pocket to carry a cable lock should the need arise to secure the walker temporarily elsewhere (dining out, theater, stadiums, etc. if it would block a fire lane) to keep it from "disappearing". After moving any under the seat items to the removable bag, I unattach it & carry it with me.
Top reviews from other countries
Cons: Cannot be assembled by a person with coordination difficulties and minimal strength. Assistance will be required; Also, the walker doesn't fold as easily as other walkers: it requires lifting the seat and pulling up on a fabric handle while simultaneously pulling the chassis together inward, and the hinges are very stiff. Other walkers are a one-handed lift and auto-fold procedure requiring little effort. If you aren't putting it into the trunk of a car, then this fault won't bother you. But if you are, look elsewhere.
