Find the right antenna for your area
Digital TV signals require better reception than analog TV signals to provide satisfactory performance (i.e. a watchable picture). If you used to get a snowy (but watchable) picture on your analog TV channels, you may find that your new digital channels do not have strong enough signals to display in this new format. Whether you live in the trees, on the plains, or in the midst of hills, make sure you find the right antenna for your individual needs.

Now came the real test - how did the channels look? I flipped through the channels and was stunned by the quality of the reception and clarity. I get all of the major channels and also many that I never even heard of, including numerous HD channels.
Although before purchasing this antenna I was a bit skeptical due to unflattering reviews, I decided to give it a try anyway (amazon is obviously good with returns if need be). I do not think any of the problems people have with this are due to the product being inadequate. Instead, it is probably location of the user. For me, I live 10 miles outside of DC (no tall buildings). I am able to get all DC channels as well as some from Baltimore, which is 50 miles away.
Just some advice - it does matter where you put the antenna. I read a lot of reviews about placing the antenna by a window. Unfortunately for me, I do not have this luxury but it does not seem to matter. However, I did move it a few feet over and received choppy reception, so I just put it in the original location and it continues to work well. I will probably play around with the location a little bit until I find the right balance between reception and visibility (lack thereof), although I must say that the antenna looks great compared to any other non-flat antenna. This is how an antenna should look, it's 2012...It sort of looks like an ipad, so it is not an eye sore.
In the end, I would say try it out and see if you get similar results. But I can 100% tell you that, if you have good location, you will pick up crystal clear channels (many of them).
P.S. cable / dish is too expensive.
Pros:
Portable (can be moved around the room or taken on vacation)
Picks up most channels from long range (I am about 30 miles out of the city where my broadcast stations are)
Comes with amplifier (makes a difference if you are far from broadcast)
Cheap
Cons:
Receptions Interference from moving around the room
Misses some hard to pickup channels (ours missed the two lowest band stations in our area)
TL;DNR: Product does what you should expect for the price. If you want great reception, get one of those old roof mount antennas and aim it at the nearest city. An old antenna will still pick up the new HD broadcasts, you just need a digital converter box.
I purchased another brand a few months ago and while its reviews were solidly in favor of its attributes I found that it was just an unidirectional amplified antenna with nothing much to praise other than the fact that it worked fundamentally well. Having a sense of perfection in some things, I bought this RCA 1650 antenna becasue of the write up and recognizing fully that some reviewers compared it to rabbit ears or worse. Upon opening the box I immediately saw that the dimensions were stated incorrectly. The antenna is NOT 1.7X8.9X2.6. It is about the size of a sheet of government paper (8X10) and about 1 inch thick. NO big thing but a consideration I had since I had the perfect mounting spot for the dimensions reported. I further expected an omnidirectional antenna and received another unidirectional antenna. Perhaps a note of disclosure would be appropriate here. We live in the valley between two mountains (hills to some until you try to climb one) next to the creek. The terrain suggests, rightly so, that any antenna would not work well and sure enough this one does not work much better than the other one as far as signal strength. Given the flat design compared to some modern art stature that looks ugly and the simple and most imporant fact that this antenna draws in most of the digital and high definition stations in this area I would have to give a significant number of kudos to the RCA compared to the other. Another slight factor is the manner in which the hardwired coaxial cable exits the bottom of the flat piece. At the bottom of the flat piece (I do not know the technical name of this but I hope you can see what I am attempting to describe) the cable exits on its way to the amplifier or the TV's connection point. The manner in which the cable exits causes it to put pressure on the flat piece in such a manner that connecting the provided stand not to work properly. An attempt to have the cable run below the stand did not work well nor did placing the cable over the stand work well either. A design flaw that should be corrected with the next model. The coaxial cable's gauge should be a bit larger in an effort to handle digital signals. In the directions it suggests that the antenna not be placed near metal so that the signal would not be diminished but it would be well worth the slight extra cost to make the cable shielded to eliminate that condition if possible. I know picky, picky. Bottom line: it works fairly well and it is better than the other one that I bought.

I cut the cord over three years ago and never looked back. This is a great antenna!
