Manufacturer made battery pack replacment obsolete! Old fashioned Nicad batteries that die. Should be lithium bateries.
NiCad batteries - not lithium. Manufacturer made the battery pack obsolete! This means I have to put this whole vacuum in the dump. Very sad! . These are Old fashioned Nicad batteries that cannot be recharged after a year or two, i.e. they die. The whole vacuum will now end up in a dump.Just another waste of time, effort and materials.Royal/Dirt Devil is totally NON-GREEN! Only interested in taking you money and then selling you another vacuum!

Let's start with the good: This vacuum worked reasonably well...while it worked. It wasn't terribly loud, and the suction was good enough for this type of vacuum. The battery charge life was not very long (~12 minutes), and perhaps that should have been a warning of what came next.
The bad: After seven months of infrequent (but regular) use, the vacuum stopped charging. Whether this is the fault of the vacuum's battery or the base, who knows? All I know is that it stopped charging, therefore making it useless. I called Royal/Dirt Devil's customer service line, and waited on hold for 10+ minutes. Once I spoke with someone, they gathered my information and told me I had to leave the vacuum on the charger for 24 hours and then call back if the problem persisted. I had already done that several times, but they would not accept that as proof of the problem. So I obliged, and was finally given a warranty return authorization number. But here's the biggest problem: Royal's warranty policy has the consumer paying for return shipping, which will cost over half what we paid for the vacuum in the first place. I asked if I could "field destroy" (a common, legitimate warranty term) the vacuum and send them a picture, but that was not accepted. I asked if they would pay the shipping. Nope. I asked if they could charge me their (certainly lower) corporate shipping rate. Nope. Now I'm faced with spending far too much to ship back a faulty vacuum, which will likely net us another soon-to-be worthless vacuum, or just throw away this thing along with our purchase price.
The bottom line: Save yourself this hassle, and buy something else... anything else.

Not only does this thing pick up crumbs, it picks up cheerios and even fruit loops, which are much bigger. It will even suck up light fluffy stuff like lint balls from a few inches away. The head is small enough and low enough profile to run under my kitchen cabinets along the baseboards and also under the kitchen chairs between the rolling legs (we have rolling chairs with 5 legs, so they are pretty close together). The head swivels, so even though my cabinets stick out quite a bit over the baseboards, I can tilt the vertical part of the machine to the side and easily clean in one long swoop down the baseboards(unlike other vacuums where you have to use many small strokes to get the space clean). This thing makes after meal clean-up a snap! I use to have a house with all tile floors and I wish I had had this for those floors. I also use it in the bathrooms and it picks up small bits of trash and hair very easily. The only thing it doesn't pick up is food stuck to the floor, wet food, or anything bigger than about a fruit loop (it does pick up smaller chunks of bread crusts and dried up peas!). I would not recommend this for carpets except for stuff like "baby dumped cheerios on the carpet" or "after popcorn night mess in front of the TV". It is not powerful enough to get deep down into shag carpet for daily dirt. It might work well on indoor/outdoor carpet, though.

I initially charged it full (about 6 hours) and then completely ran it down. Then I charged it again and used for a few weeks. Then after cleaning one morning, I let it completely run down again and recharged completely again. This is the best way to conserve the battery life.

Cleaning it is easy. Very similar to any other dust buster I have ever had. But this has a much bigger storage space. Since I don't have animals and don't use it on any kind of carpet, the trap is mostly full of crumbs and stuff from meals. So, I don't empty the trap every time, just after dinner at the end of the day. The one time I tried it on carpet (just to see how it worked) and the few times I used it for quick spot clean-ups on the carpet, it does pick up hair and lint that gets wound around the filter. But that is easily undone and thrown away. It does mean actually touching the mess. I like the filters. They look easy to clean- no need to purchase more.

I currently have the charging unit in a closet in the laundry room with the cord coming out the side to a nearby outlet. I don't have any closets with outlets in them, not even the pantry. I did not think ahead about where I was going to put this before I bought it. It does fold easily and might fit inside a tall under sink cabinet with an outlet, but that would not be as convenient to get out for me. The machine sits nicely in the charging unit. The light comes on when charging and goes out when charged. As long as you make sure the light is on when you put it into the charging unit, that should not be a problem.

If this thing only lasts a year, I will consider it a win. My floor is cleaner more often now because it is so easy to clean. I was using a cloth mop before and then a separate broom and dust pan, which took much longer and lots of bending over. Not to mention having to buy and change the extra cloth pads on the mop. I do still have to mop the floors with hard wood cleaner every week, but that is because I have 4 small kids who drop lots of wet, messy food on the floor!

***UPDATE***
Six months later and the machine is still going strong! I did find out that WHERE you plug it in is very important! I moved it from an outlet shared with other, large appliances to an outlet all on its own. The power strength and use length went way up! Also, make sure to clean the filters, brush, and make sure the tube leading into the bin isn't clogged. Mine was and the machine would still pick up debris, but just not as fast. It had hair in the tube that blocked the suction.

Bought it Feb. 6, 2015. It worked great for about 8 months, then it seemed like the battery got tired or something. With a 2-year warranty, I took it to the nearest authorized repair service. They replaced the battery, which worked once or twice, then back to near zero power. I determined that the base wasn't charging the battery, so I took it back to the repair place. Left it there for a week or so and the repair place said Dirt Devil had said they would send me a new one. By now, it was Nov. 2015. Used it for another 8 months or so and it's doing the same thing. The new one also has a 2-year warranty. Before taking it back to the repair place, I decided to look on Google for other solutions. I found a video at which showed that if you just unplug it from the wall, then plug it back in, the charger starts working! I have done that and to my surprise, the little red charging light came on and stayed on. I just did that today (August 18, 2016) so I don't know if it will STAY on, but if it does, I'll edit my post here to let you know.

UPDATE: It works for a few hours, then back to square one. I unplugged and re-plugged about 5 times since I wrote the "Simple Fix" and the charging light does stay on for 6 or 8 hours. You'd think there would be some charge, and there was, but V-E-R-Y weak. I kept doing this all day Friday and Saturday. The charging light would go out and I thought it was charged, but when I tried to use the vacuum, it was still weak. Sunday morning, still no change, If you buy this vacuum, expect it to last only about 6 to 8 months. But it has a 2-year warranty. I'm going to try the warranty folks again.

FURTHUR UPDATE: I took the replacement vacuum back to the repair center. They gave me ANOTHER new one! I guess since it was still within the original 2-year warranty, that was the way to go, but they said "This is the last time." :-) Anyway, I'm happy. I would buy this one again since the warranty people stick to their warranty.

UPDATE 3 - 31 March 2019: First unit was replaced. After very light usage because not primary vacuum, again, battery is dead and will not charge. It’s going to garbage. Save your money. Buy a better unit from a different company.

UPDATE 2: Dead! Will not charge. GARBAGE! I should've bought a Dyson…

UPDATE 1: After one year of light usage, it barely keeps a charge long enough for me to do a quick pickup in the kitchen. Disappointed.
-------------------
It's a nifty little back-up vacuum cleaner. It sucks!... like it's suppose to. I have 4 cats and it manages to do a decent job at clearing the area rugs. Not the best for stairs. Not a bad deal. So far it keeps it's charge long enough to do a good pick-up job on about 800 sq. ft. Then you feel it losing it's sucking power on the carpet. I would have preferred if it could be hung in a charger off the floor.

Love this little red devil! It is perfect for daily pickups. We run it through the kitchen, living room, hall, and rec room and entrance every day. I would be lost without it. We have had 3 of them over a 25 yr period. Both the older ones still work well, just not as long so we keep one to use in each bedroom and bathroom.

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent at first then the problems start
Reviewed in Canada on May 30, 2017
I bought an Accucharge a year ago. It was decent enough for about 30 short and light uses, then the problems started. I kept the vac on the charger when not in use, by the way.

Usage and performance - I bought this for quick cleanups on three types of surfaces: hardwood, ceramic and thin carpets. It performed well enough on carpet, but not so well on hardwood or ceramic where I often had to go over the same area several times for it to pick up everything. I'm not talking big messes here! Mainly hair, crumbs and dust bunnies. No pets, no kid messes. The Accucharge was not very good at picking up anything close to a baseboard. In other words, not very good at front or side cleaning.

Cleaning - easy enough to clean, but after accumulating some stuff in the collection unit the filter became clogged after about 20 uses and performance suffered. I cleaned it and it worked well again. For a while, anyway. Read on.

Charge - having a NiCad battery it lost power during each use, and over time, it's max power slowly declined. Then one day I went to use it and it had very little charge. I found a suggestion on the Dirt Devil site to unplug the charger unit from the wall for several minutes, run the battery down completely, and allow it to recharge for 24h. Problem is it will not even recharge at all. The charging light flickered, I heard a frequent clicking sound for about 30 minutes, so I unplugged everything.

Recommendation - Overall, I was not pleased with this vacuum. Initially there's a decent bang for the buck until things start to suck... or not suck as much, to be more accurate. The strength of the battery and the performance of the unit declined over a few months and infrequent usage making it less effective and frustrating to use. You will probably be happy with this for a month or so like I was, then you might just notice the same problems start to creep up, and then it becomes a pain to use. I didn't bother contacting Dirt Devil about this, figuring that even if they replaced the unit, I would still eventually have the same experience. Personally, I will not be buying Dirt Devil products ever again. My next cordless stick will have a replaceable lithium ion battery and will probably be a Hoover.

It worked great for the first 8 months or so. Perfect for the 2BR apartment we live in. Then the battery stopped charging properly. I am giving 3 stars because of their customer service and warranty. I contacted the manufacturer online and explained the situation. After a couple emails, they shipped a new one.
