Sleek, stylish, and compact grill with the cooking power of infrared heat (view larger).
Featuring Char-Broil's patented and award-winning TRU-Infrared cooking system, the compact Urban Gas Grill (model 463270613) offers two burners to get the job done in a smaller cooking area (with a total of 20,000 BTUs of heat). Each burner has its own temperature gauge located above the control knob and working at grate level for a true reading of the heat about to sear your steak or whatever you may be grilling. It's ideal for those living in apartments and condos or with patios and decks where space is at a premium.
This grill features 340 square inches of primary cooking area with a stainless steel grate, a 125 square-inch raised secondary cooking area (for slow cooking or warming items) with a porcelain-coated wire grate. Other features include Char-Broil's Surefire electronic ignition, a combination of stainless steel and painted steel appliance style cart construction with black-painted folding side shelves, and four rolling casters (two locking, two non-locking) for easy storage.
How TRU-Infrared Works
All Char-Broil TRU-Infrared grills generate a minimum of 65 percent infrared heat, which is evenly spread across the entire cooking surface to cook food -- without drying -- at temperatures that range from simmer to sear.
Unlike traditional gas grills that use convective heat (hot air) to cook food, Char-Broil's TRU-Infrared grills limit the hot air flow and use natural, radiant heat to cook food directly without drying. While convective heat destroys food's moisture barrier, infrared heat penetrates it without drying and locks in natural juices and flavors. Char-Broil's TRU-Infrared cooking system virtually eliminates flare-ups while producing very even heat (no hot or cold spots).

The screws, bolts, nuts, washers, etc. are packed in a way that make it easy to identify which ones you need during assembly and the assembly instructions are very well written. Still tedious to put together, but that is just something you do once. Took longer then I expected. I would suggest assembling the grill before you actually need to use it - not when you are planning to cook out.
The grill plates are heavy-duty stainless steel and do a great job of searing the meat. They do need to be cleaned every so often because the channels tend to accumulate fat and debris which gets cooked on. This time of year (summer) I tend to use the grill a lot. Errant pieces of fat and meat that fall off during the cooking process DO NOT fall through the grill since the grill plates are not open grids like you see on most grills. I just use my pressure washer and clean.
Lastly, I purchased the natural gas conversion kit (Item model number: 4584609 which sells for $43 on Amazon) It literally took me 2 minutes to convert this grill to natural gas. When I had this house plumbed for natural gas, I had a natural gas hook-up installed next to my patio. What a relief to be able to cook (sometimes for hours if doing ribs or baked potatoes) and not worry about propane use or costs. My gas bill for the entire month (June, 2014) was less then $16 which didn't even seem to increase from before I owned this grill. I think I was being charged the minimum monthly charge from the gas company and this grill (even though I was using it 3 to 4 times a week) still didn't put me over the minimum charges. It was like cooking for free whereas propane certainly would not have been free. In Ohio, my gas bill only goes up in the winter when I am actually using natural gas to heat my home. I also have a gas water heater and gas oven so I recommend natural gas to anyone who has a hook-up.
I am a divorced mother of two college students. Cooking used to be done out of love and necessity for my family, now with them both being away I have to learn to adapt my cooking-habits.
So I decided with the summer approaching to shop for a grill online. After extensive research I finally came across a grill that caught my eye because of the cuteness of it (mainly the stainless steel) I read the reviews and searched a little more and somehow I kept coming back to this grill.
I decided on the purchase about a month ago now, it was delivered within two days but I decided to wait until I returned from my vacation to put it together. And after today's meal OMG! I am beyond sold!!!
I have never grilled like this before in my life I used to watch my dad as a little girl grill and que and I thought he was a master chef and in recent years my brother took the title.
But TODAY thanks to the Charbroil Quantum Infrared Grill I am the Reigning Queen! I made the most succulent meat on this grill I have ever tasted and yes I am a food connoisseur with the pallet to confirm it!
I was so shocked at the taste of this boneless prime rib that I was almost afraid to try another piece because I thought there is no way this flavor could be real,( not that I am not a great cook) but the smoky savor(yes I dropped in the wood chips) and moist tenderness of this slice of meat could not have been done at my hands. Then I remembered what I read about how this grill seals in the juices, it is no lie people!
Yes I paid $300.00 for a grill and I am an Empty-Nester, I live in a condo, with a very quaint spaced-deck (the fit is prime), and I no longer do the quantity entertaining of my former years but OMG! because of this grill I want to invite over strangers just so they can taste the meat that this grill produces!
It definitely assist in promoting my desire to entertain!
Cons:
I will admit that it did take some time for me to put it together close to six hours easily, but I guess it was because I'm a female under age 50 with no experience in this arena and I did it alone.
I also ran into a problem with the wire to the ignition switch but I called Char-Broil customer service immediately and they created an order for a new one with no hassles at all.
So even though I am manually lighting this grill to get the job done, trust me it matters not, because this grill gets the job done!
I will not deduct any points for any of the aforementioned simply because none of those issues warrant it!!!
The clean up is worth it because this is an investment for me and it deserves the required care.
This grill is a total package: it is pretty and inviting on the outside and when you open the mouth/lid it continues to draw you into it's beauty and charm as it delivers optimum, encore performance!
Barring any unforeseen issues I will be a customer for life!
The upside is no flareups and increased likelihood of moist meat. The downside is if you like a heavier BBQ flavor and a little char on your food, that's a little less likely. A REAL downside is that all those little holes get clogged very quickly by dripping fat (which then chars) and suddenly you're cooking in an oven, not on a grill. And cleaning those trays is a royal PITA.
You could say that using a good gas grill is like driving a sports car, while infrared is like driving a Cadillac. You want to feel the road or not? You want a stick or a manual? Can't you cook chicken without drying it out?
By the way, the build quality seems good and the cooking surface is plenty large for most get togethers (I've had mine for a year) but I wouldn't want to pay more than I did ($250 off-season).
My next grill will probably not be an infrared. Guess I like the stick shift.
AUGUST 6, 2014 UPDATE, over two years into ownership:
I won't be getting another infrared grill, that's for sure. Unclogging (or rather trying to unclog) the infrared holes is a losing battle that gets worse over time.
As for build quality, I have no complaints. The stainless wants to rust, as I am close to the ocean. I tried waxing the stainless and now have switched to Orange GLO on all surfaces.

The BBQ itself is well made. The best part is the grill - excellent heat distribution, no big flare ups, cooks the steaks & burgers very well and were very juicy. Don't get fooled thinking this comes with separate grills to place on top. It does not and it does not need them. You cook right on the 'corrugated' stainless steel surface. There are some models from this same company that do have the separate grills but this one doesn't.
I actually called them to make sure because it wasn't clear, and the Customer Service rep wasn't sure either. I think the company has realized there is a lot of confusion from their customers as to which models come with separate grills and which ones do not. Their 'music' that they play while you are on hold on the phone tries to explain the difference to customers but still does not make it clear. This one definitely does not and that's how it should be. I think I like it better than the ones that do as there is one less thing to clean.
I recommend this grill highly. I tried a few others and this type with the 'infrared' surface really does work well.
I used it also with a cast iron pan to cook up liver and onions and bacon so as to not stink up the house, it gets hot so fast, it makes cooking quick and easy and because it is only 2 burners I am not wasting a lot of propane like I would with the large kirkland one,, sometimes bigger is not better in the world of BBQs anyways. I'd be tempted to keep an eye out for one on sale, put it in storage so when this one probably goes in 6-7 years, I have replacement already....
Previous review:
Beautiful and awesome BBQ, except the electric ignition. The module arrived cracked and fell apart while I was installing it. The manufacturer is sending a new one. After getting off the phone with them, I noticed that the housing for the ignition button was also cracked!
If not for those two things, I'd have given this 5 stars easily.
