I have no regrets with this purchase. Actually, I am planning to buy another one, exactly the same. This is a well thought out product with solidly built parts.
1. Install the metal aerator pipe with a 1" PVC pipe coupling (e.g., Lowe's P/N 50110) on each end (see brightest thing in photo) to make absolutely sure it will never come loose. This assembly fits tightly so expect to whittle a tiny amount of the black plastic from the two holes.
2. When very hot outside, avoid storing heavy loads with the door panel downward -- too much strain on it.
3. Assembly is manageable by 1 person except for 5-10 minutes -- to start 6 or so of the screws.
4. Drill screw holes as perpendicularly as you can to the curved surfaces. I used my own drill bit (better quality).
5. Finish the assembly somewhere where the unit will make it through your doorways (duh!).
---- Original 5-Star Review ----
I bought this after reading many reviews about it and competing models. Poor durability and build quality are recurring themes, but less so with this compost bin. After rejecting an all-metal bin due to cost, I got this one. I built it in maybe 3 h, and put it into use here in the hot Texas sun. Composting works well with almost no smell. I rotate the barrel every couple of days, it's not that hard even when full. As we came into summer, two problems arose: First, as mentioned in a review, the metal aerator tube became dislodged from its two end-holes and was just lying in the barrel. Second, on a really hot day with a quite full load, my morning rotation left the door side down. The >100° day and the weight of the load caused one of the door latches to pull partially from the plastic, which popped the door on that side dumping part of the load and leaving the door warped. Sounds bad, right? Not really. I was able to re-secure the door latch and, until the load finished composting, I just made sure to leave the door upwards after rotating. When I put the load in my garden, to put the aerator tube back in place, instead of disassembling most of the barrel to do so (as one reviewer did), I bought two female-to-female couplings (used to connect 1" PVC pipes (Lowe's P/N 50110), which can be pounded with a rubber mallet into the ends of the aerator tube, used a hack saw to cut 3/4" from one end of the tube, used a small knife to slightly enlarge the two holes that the tube fits into so the couplings fit through, fit the tube with a coupler on one end into one hole, then used the mallet to hammer the other coupling into the tube from the outside of the barrel. Good tight fit, won't come out. I reattached the door latch and, voila, good as new. I talked to the company during this experience and they were really (really!) responsive. I look forward to many compost loads out of this thing.

- Shipping: The tumbler arrived in a box that was perhaps smaller than I anticipated - but still big enough that it was cumbersome to move. The box is of cheap construction and was starting to fall apart. However, it did it's job as nothing was damaged inside. I used the shipping bands to drag it to my workshop to put together.
- Unpacking: I was pleasantly surprised there was not a lot of unnecessary packing material or parts sealed in adult-proof packaging. Everything was logically placed and came out easily. There was not a lot of wasted material.
- Assembly: To be honest - there were a lot more parts and steps than I would have imagined. Nothing is difficult, there's just quite a few steps and processes to accomplish which will make this time consuming. Everything is logical and well planned out and all the parts fit together quite well. This was a very well designed kit - it just requires a lot more of the customer. Perhaps this keeps the price down. I put this together by myself even though the instructions state to use two people. There are only a few later steps that require some ingenuity and perhaps unlisted tools to accomplish with one person. However, if you have the extra person and two sets of tools - you'll get this put together in less than half the time. Total time to put together (and I was moving slowly - on the back side of the flu) was about 2 hours.
Drilling the holes as per the instructions is not necessary - but is advisable. The holes act as a guide for the screws; the screws are secured from behind the panel by a separate plastic device. Where the two person necessity may come into play is there are two screws (and their associated plastic securing device) on opposing panels that are a stretch for even the longest of arms (mine are not). One person posted they used extra long pliers to hold the plastic device on one side while they stretched to run their drill/driver with the other. * I took a simpler approach. I ran the screw through the panels so that there was more screw exposed on the inside than needed to make contact with the plastic device. I then used a rubber mallet and gently tapped the plastic device in place (the shape of the plastic device fits into grooves in the panel to keep it from rotating) and then ran the drill/driver from the outside. It worked like a charm.
The reason I gave this four stars is this product could have been designed to reduce the assembly burden on the customer while not driving up the price of the product. Time is money - and this thing takes a good amount of time to put together. I am mechanically inclined and meticulous. If I was feeling 100% I could have assembled this in about 1 hour and 30-40 minutes without rushing. If I had the help of an equally capable friend to build this it would have taken between 40-45 minutes (not including any time required to lay out everything and organize the labor).
- Use: It's simple and straight forward. A lot of people have made comments that the tumbler is hard to turn once it full. Perhaps it's like the Price is Right - and the big wheel: some people barely get it around once, while others nearly spin it off the wall. I also think people are over-tightening the center hub bolts, which will cause increased binding when the tumbler is full.
My tumbler is easy to turn when full - no problems. Here's what I did to ensure that:
I used a very small amount of automotive/boat trailer bearing grease on the washers and the spacers during the assembly process. There was no excess grease present and none of the grease on those fittings will contact or contaminate the compost. The key to not over tightening is to carefully gauge when there is no slop left on the side walls (during that stage of assembly) and only snug the bolt down slightly more than this point. The securing nut is a nylock nut and will not back off, so don't be concerned with that. The nut does not have to be super-tight. The result: Smooth (not sloppy) and easy turning of the tumbler. The locking mechanism is easy to operate and has a detent to allow you to spin the tumbler without having to hold out the locking pin. I can easily spin mine in both directions without any binding or inadvertent engagement of the locking pin. None of the latches come open when I spin it aggressively. Proper alignment of the latches during assembly helps ensure this.
There have been a number of complaints of rusted latches. There is an easy preventative solution - order a product by Amsoil called "Heavy Duty Metal Protector". You can order it directly from their website. It sprays on like a slightly thick WD40 product - but it later turns into a protective wax-like protective coating. You don't have to leave a heavy coating on to get the protection either. Spray on a little, dab off the excess and then let it dry. I have polished aluminum automotive parts that have stayed perfect for 6 months without having to re-polish or re-apply, and several items made of steel and cast iron that stay outside in the Florida humidity, heat and mild airborne salinity. No corrosion at all.
It would have been nice if Lifetime had provided stainless steel hardware - but they didn't. So count on the fact mother nature will be eager to "compost" the metal bits of this product as well and take an extra 5 minutes to protect the exposed metal parts. Problem solved.
The instruction book is short - but to the point. There is also lot of information online to help improve your composting process as well. Mine has been "cooking" for a week and I can already see the process moving along. I spin mine every couple of days (anytime I add vegetable scraps), but that's not necessary. Once or twice a week will keep things aerobic.
Appearance - It's actually not bad looking at all, and much better than my old compost heap. I have mine under a live oak in the corner of my back yard. I will likely buy another one here in a couple of months.
