This review is a 2 part review for me.. Part 1, the saw it self. Part 2, my experience with Evolution's customer service..
Part 1: The saw itself, is nice overall. I would give it 4 starts, with no question. It was fairly easy to assemble, just be careful when inserting the sliding rails; if you bump the tabs on the end it can disengage the locking mechanism for the locking tabs and it's a PITA to get them locked back into place with the rails half slid through the guide tubes. The alignment of the laser guide is a little tedious, but there some decent video's on evo's website for setup of various functionalities, which I highly recommend you watch. I opted for the additional metal specific blade; as my sole intent of the saw, initially, is to help build some metal parts for my camping trailer. Everything I've cut so far has been 3/16th or 1/8th inch square and angle mild steel. All my cuts have been relative smooth and flat, with minimal blade chatter/deflection. My saw came with 1 vertical clamp. I would have like to have seen at least one of the horizontal clamps included as well. Also, to buy extra accessories requires calling customer service, no online purchase for parts; at least for the US as of 4/11/2018.. I discovered the accessories for the Evo 3 saw by accidently running across the UK website. So, i'm not sure why there's no US parts site right now, but this brings me to my part 2.
Part 2: Evolution customer service... Where do I start... It has been one of the absolute BEST experiences I've had with any company in quite some time! Yes, seriously... When I received my saw, I noticed my fence was very notably warped.. I was able to make do for a few days to not get to behind on my project, but I made a call first thing monday, 4/9/2018. Surprisingly enough, a very nice lady answered the phone. No menus to press a bunch of stupid options, no pre recorded auto responses systems; just I red blooded, genuinely nice, lady who answered the phone and solved my issue in under 5 mins. Seriously, she asked basic info on when I placed my ordered, verified my info, and told me the replacement part was available and shipping out that day. Now on 4/11/2018, just 2 days later, my replacement part is here and my saw is fully operational! I can't say thank you enough to Evolution for focusing on what's important, your customers. We all have to realize parts are going to get messed up, and people are going to make mistakes. How we all choose to handle these situation are what defines us.. Not our words but our actions..
I really hope this saw holds up for a while. As i continue to become more proficient with my metal working, I could definitely see myself adding one of their 15" chop saws to my garage. Also, i'll be calling them soon to order a few more clamps for my saw.
For anyone needing parts/service in the US.. the number is 1-866-386-8665..
Also, if you want an additional top or front clamp, here's the part numbers:
R3SM1 - Evolution RAGE3 Back Clamp Unit Module - $14.40
R3SM9 - Evolution RAGE 3 M9 Front Clamp Assembly - $16.99
The saw was fairly simple to assemble when it arrived. The directions are not perfect, but adequate for the average tinkerer. The saw is solid in most respects. There are a couple items that I feel are really worthless on the saw and could be dropped by the manufacture to save money.
1. The laser site. Worthless. Wasn't even close out of the box. After fiddling with it for about 20 minutes, I still couldn't get it dialed in. It was either off left or right, moved left or right as the blade was brought to the work, or was crooked. Getting it aligned one way seemed to push it out in another. Luckily this saw has a clear site to the blade from either side, so aligning the work with the blade for the cut is easy.
2. The adjustable stop. Worthless. It's plastic and not very accurate at all. The thumb screws to tighten it down makes it worse. Find an alternative.
The saw did come with a work piece clamp that fits in a hole on either side of the fence. It's pretty much only useful on the left side of the fence. I wish it were a little closer to the blade to clamp smaller pieces. On the right side, it only works when cutting an angle to the left which moves the motor out of the way.
When you pull the trigger, there is a delay before the blade spins up. This is confusing at first because you pull the trigger expecting it to spin up right away and it doesn't. Once you figure this out, it's actually a good feature.
The metal blade will cut great for maybe the first 20 cuts or so. After that you really have to take your time pushing the blade though the material. I found once the blade starts to become dull, it will jump around side to side when cutting. If you need perfect cuts, this could be a problem. I found cutting really slow until the blade is well into the work solves most of this problem. You can tell when your blade is becoming dull because your work pieces you cut will start to get hot at the cut, and not be cold to the touch like when the blade is new.
One reviewer mentioned that this saw only comes with a 1" arbor. And that may have been the case for his. But mine came with an arbor plate that I could flip over to choose 5/8" or 1", so this saw works with store bought blades too.
BOTTOM LINE:
For the money this is an EXCELLENT saw -- just don't buy it for the laser site or the material stop!
EDIT: 12/15/2021. So I've had the saw for 5 years now and still use it quite a bit. The laser sight never worked and I could never get replacement sights to work either. My biggest complaint about this saw is the stop. If you need accurate 90° cuts then don't buy this saw. You will never get deadon angles from this saw. And unfortunately there are no adjustments you can make to improve the accuracy. And there is always a little slop you can't get rid of.
