Step 1: PrepProtect your smile while you sleep the The Doctor's Nightguard - these 3 easy steps usually takes just 8 minutes! Fill your microwave safe mug halfway with water |
Step 2: HeatMicrowave on high for 3 minutes. Let the water stand for 30 seconds and then remove the mug. Place your nightguard facedown in the water for 2 minutes. Remove your nightguard from the water with a fork so you don't burn yourself. Place on a plate sticky-side up and allow it to cool for 10 seconds. |
Step 3: FitPick up your nightguard by gently grasping the bottom. Don't touch the top sticky part. Using your mirror place your nightguard in your mouth onto the upper teeth. Putting the tips of your front teeth as close as possible to the front of the nightguard, so it doesn't slide. Now bite down. Use your thumbs to gently push the soft material on the outside of your teeth. Open your mouth fully and use your thumbs to press the molds against the insides of your teeth, avoiding your gums. Bite down again and count to 30. You will know it's time to remove your nightguard if it stays in place when you open your jaw. To take your nightguard out, open your mouth fully, and use your thumbs to gently remove it from your mouth. If it doesn't fit properly refer to your instruction manual for the reheating process and start at step 3. |

I knew I had a problem with clenching my teeth at night, and my dentist recommended I buy a bite splint to help with any jaw pain I was experiencing. I didn't believe it would help but bought one anyway. The first bite splint I bought was impossible to sleep in. The fit wasn't right, and I couldn't adjust it easily. Because of this, I kept gagging and couldn't fall asleep. There was no way I was going to be able to sleep in it.
The Doctor's NightGuard is different. It is very simple to mold, and the process is pretty quick and very easy. The fit on my teeth ends up being perfect and pretty comfortable. You still have to adjust to having a block of plastic surrounding your teeth, but it's.fairly thin, and I found it easy to adjust to.
After wearing this night guard for a while, I learned I not only had a problem with clenching but with grinding, as well. How did I figure this out? Because I was wearing down the plastic! However, even after 1 1/2 - 2 years of almost nightly wear, I never broke through. The fit stayed great that entire time.
I recently bought a new guard (same brand) due to a piece breaking off the back of the guard (the "gooey" innards went beyond the harder plastic edging since I have a small mouth). Don't worry, though - it wasn't something I could have choked on. I bit and played with that plasticky part, and then ripped it off with my hands. The instructions state that you can simply cut off these elongated pieces with a knife.
Enter the Doctor's Night Guard. I was skeptical, but this thing has worked like a dream for the last five months. My teeth feel fine in the morning (does that mean I'm better at doing this than the actual dentist?!) and I really miss it if I don't wear it. It fits well, although it's not long enough for the hard plastic part to cover my farthest back teeth (and I don't have any wisdom teeth either). The softer plastic that you can mold does cover them, though I don't think it will last as long this way.
About four months in, however, I started finding little bits of plastic in my mouth in the morning. The thing needs to be replaced. It makes me worry about BPAs and whatever the heck is in this plastic (I don't know!) and whether or not it's safe to chew on soft plastic every night for years on end. I guess it's better than grinding my teeth down to nothing or finding another dentist who can make me one that would also be of questionable plastic and may or may not fit right and may or may not be covered by my insurance. At this price, I don't mind replacing the DIY version every few months for now.
Note: Though the instructions say that this is for your top teeth only, I made a bottom night guard. My dentist relatives suggest that these tend to be easier to get right, because if a top night guard doesn't fit right, it starts moving around the bones in your head and has more potential to cause jaw problems and headaches. It works just fine on my bottom teeth!
My only real complaint is that it's a little short for my mouth and that I'm suspicious of the health effects of the soft rubber layer. I'm not sure yet if I'll replace my current one with the same one or if I'll try the "classic" version which appears to be all hard plastic, or if I'll try another brand.
