(With our previous waffle iron, I spent a lot of time trying to get it clean, which I was never able to do satisfactorily with a paper towel or sponge. It would get sticky from the oil and extra things like bananas that we added to the waffles...and it seemed gross to wipe it off and put it away in the cupboard like that).
The quality of the waffles seems very good. My kids like it when we make extras and then they can heat them up in the toaster for a quick hot breakfast on a school day. Waffles with mini chocolate chips are their favorites.
This waffle iron does not have a light or timer that will tell you when the waffles are done. But that is not a problem for me -- as soon as I pour the batter in, I set my stove timer for three minutes and that is just the right time for my waffles to cook. The waffle maker heats up again for the next batch very quickly. I had debated about whether we really needed a waffle iron, since we could always make pancakes. However, making waffles is much easier than babysitting pancakes that have to be watched for bubbles and flipped. Those three minute intervals can actually be used to do other kitchen tasks -- without worrying about burning the breakfast.
I've only made sandwiches a couple of times...and my family seemed pleased with the sandwiches, both their nice appearance and that they were cooked very well (much better than if they had been fried in a pan). We are looking forward to trying a variety of new hot sandwich recipes.
I came across this particular sandwich maker and noticed that it also makes waffles. I also enjoy homemade waffles but I don't have a waffle iron. So I figured I would kill two birds with one stone and decided to go with this one.
The first thing I made with this sandwich maker was a turkey and cheese sandwich. I used wheat sandwich bread and placed two thin slices of turkey on the bread and then a slice of American cheese with a little bit of mustard and covered that up with two more thin slices of turkey and then the other piece of bread. After the green light came on I placed the sandwich onto the grid and closed it. Three minutes later I opened the lid and I had a nicely brown toasted sandwich
There are some notable differences in the way this sandwich maker works in relation to the old Clark Snakmaster. With the Snakmaster it only takes two minutes to toast a sandwich. Also the Snakmaster will completely cut the sandwich in half and seal that edge completely. This sandwich maker will not completely cut through the sandwich and more or less just crimps it in the middle. Also the "pockets" aren't as deep as the ones on the Snakmaster so you can't have a really thick filling for your sandwiches. But the sandwiches I've made so far taste exactly the same as the ones made in a Snakmaster which is really the most important part.
I have also made one batch of waffles with this since receiving it. It doesn't work quite as well as a waffle maker as it does a sandwich maker. It doesn't evenly brown the waffles although they still turn out fine and tasted great. My main problem with using it as a waffle iron is that the exterior of the machine gets uncomfortably hot when used for a prolonged period of time. I wanted to cook the whole batch of waffles in one go and freeze the uneaten ones but after making just two sets of waffles the handle was almost hot enough to burn me when opening the lid. I managed to get through making all of the waffles but I needed to be very careful when opening and closing the lid. One last thing to note is that the steam from the waffles would condense on the outside of the machine making it sweat and I also noticed some condensation inside of the power light and the green light that indicates when the machine has heated up. I don't know if this could possibly be dangerous or not.
Finally I'll list the pros and cons of this machine and then sum everything up:
Pros
-Makes good sandwiches and waffles
-Heats up in only a few minutes
-Food doesn't stick (even melted cheese)
-Easy to clean
Cons
-Waffles don't brown evenly (but still taste good)
-Doesn't seem to be designed for extended use (builds up a lot of heat)
-Latch feels a little cheap but so far has held up
-It doesn't cut a sandwich in half like the old Clark Snakmaster could do
-Sandwich pockets aren't as deep as the ones on a Snakmaster
Although I have more cons listed than pros I still think this is a decent machine. My only real complaint is how hot it gets when using it for a prolonged length of time. My other complaints are minor and mostly have to do with it not being quite as good as the old Clark Snakmaster. But since this is a dual purpose machine those can be overlooked, especially since in the end they both make great tasting sandwiches.
