Of course I eventually settled on this snow blower. I did so since I didn't want yet another gas-powered machine to have to take care of. As a possible secondary benefit, it might be better for the environment than a gas machine, but pollution is created making electricity so it's hard to tell.
After several punishing storms and one mild snow fall, here are my observations:
* Throwing Ability: I've not used a snow blower before, but I am very pleased at this unit's ability to throw the snow between 10 and 25 feet, depending on the snow density and the angle of the exit chute.
* Cutting Depth and Width: The cutting width is adequate, although certainly wider is better, IMO. I was concerned how the unit would perform with a deep snowfall. Turns out, it works super. What I do is push the handle down to elevate the opening to the top of the snow depth, throw the top snow off, and then I raise the handle, lowering the opening, and throw the bottom snow. I've also used it to chew through snow deeper than even this technique can handle, and the unit still works great. So I am now happy to know that I do not have to keep up with a snowstorm or blizzard.
* Usability: Because of the length of my driveway, I bought a 100' outdoor, cold-weather extension cord. As people have noted, you have to manage the extension cord as you walk around, but it's not an issue at all. The only time it's a pain is when I coil the cord when I'm done, since a 100' foot extension cord gets pretty heavy during coiling! The unit's controls are very simple: make sure the grey key is inserted, press the small red button, and then the large red bar. To stop, just release the bar. Since the snow blower is so light, I carry it into my backyard and use it to clear around my hot tub.
* Build Quality: I've seen people complain about the unit consisting of too much plastic, and they're correct in that the unit is primarily plastic from what I can see. I'd definitely would feel more comfortable with metal blade/scooper, but despite the punishment I've throw at this unit, including the partially-frozen end-of-driveway crud with small chunks, the blade is holding up well with only some small dings. It's got a two-year warranty, so if the scooper breaks, I'll call Toro. But so far, so excellent!
When I had my driveway plowed, I still had to shovel in front of the garage doors, shovel the main walkway, shovel around the hot tub, and shovel out the mailbox. Now, I do very little shoveling, with a whole let less sweating. I'm not sure how this will affect my electricity bill, but I'm a big fan of this snow-eating monster.
