Out-of-the-box experience

Out-of-the-box experience
The Toro arrived this afternoon via UPS, so I immediately unboxed it and followed the installation instructions. There are only 3 simple things to do: 1) Screw on the Upper Handle, 2) Insert the metal rod (lever) that turns the chute, and 3) Put the 2 cord clips on the handle.Starting with unboxing the machine, it's pretty easy. There are even instructions on the box flap on how to best get the snowblower out of the box. [Thumbs Up]. However, I heard something loose inside the box which turned out to be one set of the bolt, washer and turn-knob for the handles floating around inside (These are supposed to be attached to the lower handle loosely). [Thumbs Down on Quality Control].At Step 1, I ran into a problem. Of the 2 bolts that attach the upper handle to the lower handle, I simply cannot tighten the turn-knob onto 1 of the bolt (the other bolt worked fine). I suspect it's a defective bolt and will try to contact Toro for a replacement. Will update what happens.Step 2 was pretty simple. The metal rod (lever) is supposed to be inserted into the hole directly under the chute and snaps in place. But I find that metal rod slips out of its socket way too easily. If the lever isn't pushed in hard while attempting to turn the chute direction, it simply comes loose. I can probably live with this by turning the chute directly by hand (rather than via the lever). But its a Thumbs Down.Step 3 was snapping the cord holder in place. It's not easy at first, but figured out that bending the little plastic piece inside the round clips helps.I will continue with the review to update response from customer service and after using it for snow.[UPDATE #1]I contacted Toro customer service online to submit what the problem was and requested a new oval bolt. This was on a Friday. Amazingly, on Monday (which was MLK holiday), I received an email saying a "Screw Handle" will be sent out to me. I was a little worried that this "Screw Handle" mentioned in the email was not the same as the oval bolt that I need, so I called Toro and spoke to a live person. While the person on the phone checked on something, I must have gotten disconnected (waited forever and the person never came back on the phone).... Well, I just hung up.By Thursday, I received a UPS package with 1 oval bolt. Surprisingly, on Friday, I received another UPS package with 2 oval bolts (this must be from the phone call). So, I'm very happy with the TORO customer service. That's why I bumped my rating on this item from an initial 3 star to 4 star. BTW, I used 1 of the replacement Oval Bolt and it works as it should (no more problem).Still hasn't snowed yet but I'll update on the performance of the snowblower when I get to use it.[UPDATE #2 - 2/9/2013]We just had a blizzard with 2+ ft of heavy snow. This was for sure an ultimate test for this Toro. Well, I have a driveway that fits 2 cars front-to-back and it took me close to 5 hrs to finish clearing it. It took lots of muscle effort (my arms are so sore), but to be fair, I probably couldn't have done it without the Toro. Not only would each shovel be real heavy, the need to throw it high to the top of the growing snowbank would be way too difficult. So I probably 'earned' back half the cost of this machine with just this snow event. So, the pros is that this Toro is really light. So I lifted it into my house, next to the front door, the night before the storm. It was easy to position it thru out the snow clearing. The Toro did not cut the entire height of the snow... it was 2 ft+ of heavy snow, and based on the previous reviews, I was not surprised here. I had to manually take down the 2 ft high snow and spread it out, then run the Toro over the lowered snow. So it took a little patience to progress about 2 feet forward at a time. Still if I hand-shoveled, the effort would be much greater than pushing the Toro back and forth. The pushing motion was not exactly light work and I wish the wheels were even bigger. Putting pressure to slightly tilt the front down helps to clear down to the pavement. As far as how 'heavy-duty' this is, I was a little worried that it'll overheat of break on me. Also, I should've remembered to be more 'gentle' and avoid plowing the Toro into high snow without first taking it down, but after having done it too many times to count, it still worked fine. I'll remember that there's a risk of breaking the belt next time.I like that the chute stayed exactly where it was set to. I read that the SnowJoe has problem with this and I'm so glad I ended up not buying the SJ. Depending on the wind and the amount of snow being expelled, I had lots of instances when the snow smashed right back at my face. The throw distance was ok for a 1 car width driveway. Given I was dealing with heavy snow, I think it performed ok for such a light plastic machine. I bought a 50 ft 12 ga cord and I did not find it difficult to deal with.
