WhisperCeiling Fan - Quiet, Spot Ventilation Solution, 110 CFM
Features
- Quiet, yet powerful - ideal for new and remodel residential applications
- Integrated 4" or 6" duct adaptor on 50-110 CFM models
- Can be used to comply with ASHRAE 62.2, LEED, IAP, EarthCraft, CA Title-24 and WA state code
WhisperCeiling FV-11VQ5 110 CFM, Ceiling Mount Fan:
The workhorse of the Panasonic line, WhisperCeiling is time-tested and customer approved for its quiet, yet powerful consistency. Rated for continuous use, WhisperCeiling vent fans are a simple way to incorporate an energy efficient ventilation strategy, and are a great choice for new and remodel residential applications.
We Set the Standard for Quiet Operation:
WhisperCeiling fans feature a totally enclosed condenser AC motor and a double-tapered blower wheel to quietly move air-even at twice the static pressure as the industry standard. WhisperCeiling exceeds the performance measurement for ASHRAE 62.2, ENERGY STAR 3.0, and LEED for Homes.
Long Life Means Reduced Costs:
When you have a household or business to run, you don't want to have to replace little things like a vent fan. Panasonic fans use less energy to move larger volumes of air than other brands. Consequently, Panasonic fans run cooler so they last longer. They are also much less likely to overheat and result in motor failure. The motor is also equipped with a thermal-cutoff fuse.
Installation Flexibility:
WhisperCeiling incorporates an integrated dual 4 in. or 6 in. duct adapter to give you flexibility in duct layout and design. For short runs, you can go with a smaller duct size, but long runs are OK, too - just move up to 6 in. duct. The double hanger-bar system (expandable up to 24 in.) is ideal for positioning the fan exactly where you want it. Panasonic fans are UL listed for tub/shower enclosure (just install them on a GFCI-protected circuit). With these great features, your installation options open up.
ENERGY STAR Certified for Energy Savings:
Panasonic ventilation fans are ENERGY STAR certified, where guidelines exist. ENERGY STAR vent fans meet strict parameters set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). They provide better efficiency and comfort with less noise, and feature high performance motors and improved blade design, providing better performance and longer life.

ONE WAY to INSTALL IT:
These instructions are for installation in a RESIDENTIAL application, in an existing ceiling, FROM BELOW the ceiling, without having to enter the attic.
I have also installed one of the next larger fan, model FV-15VQ5, rated 150 cfm. The ceiling opening size and installation details are identical, EXCEPT the larger fan uses a 6” exhaust duct.
These instructions assume that the person performing this work is knowledgeable, competent, and prudent around ELECTRICAL work of this nature. If not, it is prudent to obtain the services of someone who is.
IF there is an existing fan, turn the power OFF at the electrical fuse or circuit breaker box. Do NOT rely on turning the power off at only the local light/fan switch. There are AT LEAST three reasons for this: 1. Switches do not always turn off as they should, and 2. A family member may come into the room and turn the switch back on, and 3. The original installer of this electrical system may have, thru ignorance, wired the switch thru the neutral conductor (this mishap can get you killed). In my 50+ years of experience, I have seen some really stupid things. So turn the power OFF at the electrical box. Remove the circuit fuse, or tape the circuit breaker in the OFF position. THEN use a voltage tester to make sure the power is OFF on that circuit, at the fan. Now, remove the old fan, if there is one. Cut a ceiling hole measuring 10-1/2" wide x 13-1/2" long (length same direction as the exhaust outlet). A minimum clear height of 8" will be needed for fan installation, measured from the bottom side of the ceiling, up to the nearest obstruction in the ceiling cavity. Installation is easy if one of the two housing sides is under a ceiling joist (side edge of the hole flush with the ceiling joist). Cut a 2x4 minimum 24" long (36" is even better), and place it flatwise in the ceiling, with the edge flush with the other side of the ceiling hole (opposite of the ceiling joist). Secure this 2x4 to the sheetrock ceiling using two or more sheetrock screws. So now there is wood along both sides of the fan housing opening for fan support (once it is placed in the ceiling). The mounting holes are in the housing's flat bottom flange, which will allow mounting the fan by using 4 screws screwed vertically into the joist and the 2x4. I recommend using a flat washer under each mounting screw, to prevent screw pull-thru.
The front of the housing, the outlet end, has only 1-1/4" clearance from the housing mounting flange to the electrical box, and to the outlet flange. The thickness of the sheetrock ceiling will fill part of this space, so it is not easy to provide useful mounting means at the front end. This not a very heavy fan, so support on the two sides is more than adequate. There can be NO obstruction in front of the exhaust outlet for at least 24", to allow bending the 4" diameter exhaust duct up and over such an obstruction.
The fan is supplied with expanding metal brackets for mounting between two ceiling joists, or the like. These will not be used for installation with these instructions, so these can be saved for some other use around the house, or can be discarded. There is an associated 1" w x 3" long channel bracket used for mounting the fan using the expansion brackets. This 3" channel bracket is located on the end of the housing opposite the discharge end, and will not be used for this installation. As it may interfere with placing the housing in the ceiling, I recommend this channel bracket be removed from the housing.
At this point, I recommend placing the fan housing on top of a ladder, with the back resting on top of the ladder, under the hole cut in the ceiling.
I WILL NOT provide a dissertation regarding ladder safety. I use two ladders, the second one being for additional footing support. I have installed all of the fans so far, using this method. The second ladder also provides a place for keeping tools, and the battery drill, at a handy height. A plywood table can also be made and bolted to the top of the second ladder. I leave the details of ladder safety, or other installation platform, to any persons using these fan installation instructions.
The ladder should be of height 24" less than the ceiling height. This allows turning the fan on the back end, for convenience in the following steps.
Next, it is advisable to connect the power wiring into the electrical box, as this box will not be accessible once the fan is installed into the ceiling, unless attic access is available. IF there is no existing wiring, as from an existing fan, then new wiring, and attic access will be required. If new wiring is required, provide enough length in the new conductor for access from the attic without having to crawl to the fan, which is invariably in a really tight, cramped space.
A Note of Caution:
There are THREE wires to be connected to service the fan: 1. 120 volt Power (black wire), 2. Neutral (white wire), and 3. the Ground (Green, or sometimes bare). Of these the Ground is the most important. Perhaps I should explain this statement....... if the Power wire is not connected correctly, the fan just won't work. You can fix this. But if the Ground is not connected correctly, and it is called on to perform its intended job to open the circuit Overcurrent Protection in case of a fault (short circuit), then You could become the ground path, and this can get you killed. You can't fix this. Similarly, if the Neutral white wire is loosely connected, and the power wire is energized, then the hot 120 volts CAN be present on the Neutral white wire, and this can get you killed. Being aware of these nuances comes under the heading of being "Competent and Knowledgeable". Be sure the ground is intact before energizing this fan (or any other electrical item).
Next, connect the 4" exhaust outlet duct (see NOTE 3 at the end of this review), ("Semi-Rigid Flexible Aluminum Duct"), which can expand to 8' long. Besides using the standard 4" screw type clamp to secure the duct, it is advisable to also use 3 or 4 "tek" screws thru the duct into the mounting flange. I use a small flatwasher under the screwhead to prevent the screw from tearing up the duct. Check to be sure the installed "tek" screws DO NOT INTERFERE with the movement of the backdraft damper. Aluminum duct tape can also be used to tightly seal the connection. Expand the flex duct to the required length to exhaust the air into an accessible attic space, and push it into the ceiling hole, in the desired direction. There may be applicable Codes regarding how to treat the exhaust duct in the attic, possibly including a thru-roof exit. Follow the Codes. The electrical wire (if new) should likewise be pushed into the accessible attic space. If this is a new wiring installation, now is the time to connect the new fan into the electrical circuit.
While the fan housing is resting on top of the ladder, I turn the power back on, and test the fan operation to be sure it works properly before installing the fan into the ceiling opening. After seeing that the fan operates properly, the fan can now be installed. Turn the power off again.
The fan housing portion that fits into the ceiling measures 10-1/2" by 10-1/2" (square), but the ceiling hole has to be cut 10-1/2" wide x 13-1/2" long, to allow tilting the fan housing on an angle for insertion, so that the electrical box and the exhaust outlet can fit into the opening first. Have the battery drill ready to operate, and have the four mounting screws ready for use. Perform this insertion operation, then slide the housing all the way forward into the ceiling opening. Supporting the fan housing by hand while starting the first screw is not a major task, but help may be needed to get the drill in hand, etc.The fan only weighs 8.2 pounds, so the "dunnage " 2x4 wood works just fine to support 1/2 (or less) of the housing weight. I use #10 x 2-1/2" torx ("star") head tan deck screws, with a flat washer to better spread the screw tension over the flange. Once the fan is up in the ceiling opening, I install the first support screw at the side-back hole, into the Ceiling Joist. Just this one screw holds the entire housing tight and flush against the ceiling. Then install the other three screws.
After this part of the installation is complete, there remains a 3" x 10-1/2" hole in the ceiling at the back of the fan housing, which will have to be patched. I place a 10" long 2x4 flatwise into the opening, with half of it, or a little more, overhanging into the open space, secured thru the sheetrock ceiling using sheetrock screws. This provides a good backing to receive the 3" x 10-1/2" sheetrock patch, again using sheetrock screws.
Someone knowledgeable about patching sheetrock should perform this part of the work (now or later).
Install the 13" x 13" fan grill to complete the installation. It has “bird legs” springs.
Turn the power back on.
Done.
NOTES:
1. The fan weighs 8.2 pounds
2. The "Assembled Length, Width and Height" given in the Technical Details are those of the box the fan is packaged in, not those of the actual fan unit. The fan housing dimensions are 10.5" wide x 10.5" long x 7.5" deep, plus a 3" protrusion for the electrical connection box, and a 4" protrusion on the same end for the duct outlet. Refer to product photos for orientation.
3. Before connecting the exhaust duct, REMOVE the shipping tape holding the outlet backdraft damper closed.

Panasonic FV-08VQ5 (80cfm)
* So quiet that you can hardly tell it's on. Not loud enough to create privacy.
* It's great for my 3x5ft 'toilet room'. It does create a draft in such a small room but it keeps the air fresh so it's worth it.
* Easy installation with the included telescoping mounting brackets which you screw into the joists.
Panasonic FV-15VQ5 (150cfm) *** MY FAVORITE ***
* Has a gentle sound of whooshing air, but still much quieter than a standard-grade 50cfm fan. Not loud enough to create privacy.
* It's great for any bathroom from 5x7ft to 7x10ft (personal experience). It doesn't create a cold draft unless you stand with bare feet next to the door. Mirror won't fog up, no matter how hot the shower is!
* Easy installation with the included telescoping mounting brackets which you screw into the joists.
Panasonic FV-20VQ3 (190cfm)
* Has a moderate whooshing sound. Still quieter than a standard-grade 50cfm fan.
* It's great for a larger bathroom like 8x10ft, or if you take really hot showers.
* Difficult installation because it doesn't include mounting hardware. You'll need some carpentry skills to mount it.
Panasonic FV-30VQ3 (290cfm)
* Has a strong whooshing sound, along with a metallic rattle that others have mentioned. I would say it's about 50% louder than the 190cfm. Probably louder than a standard-grade 50cfm.
* I bought this for my 11x12ft bathroom with 10ft ceilings (1320 cu ft), with two sinks, a shower and a jetted tub. However it may have been overkill. I may have been satisfied with the 190cfm fan and it would've been much quieter.
* Difficult installation because it doesn't include mounting hardware. You'll need some carpentry skills to mount it.
Also note that these fans require a 6 inch duct which is much bigger than the standard 3 or 4" duct that most fans use. (The 80cfm can also use a 4" duct).
The only downside is that it doesn't provide much white noise, to give you a sense of privacy in the bathroom.

Was and easy remove the old fan and insert this one
Tip :
Double check your stud/joist spacing and do your measurements so you can pre set your brackets before you start making a hole. I had to install 2 fans it took a little work with the first but 2nd one took 15 min .
Good luck
Good build quality.
Great instructions.
No problems at all with it after 2 years.
Venting was a bit tricky but that was mostly due to it being installed in an old cottage that wasn't designed to have a fan in the ceiling.
Sucks air hard and very quiet. Biggest bath fan Ive ever seen. Fit most builder fans inside of the housing for this one.
I used 6" insulated vent lines and dampers and it draws hard
