Wasn't as great as the hype. Fine for an emergency radio, but that's about it.

Wasn't as great as the hype. Fine for an emergency radio, but that's about it.
I'm not sure what's so great about this tiny radio, other than its size. Did I get a dud?My reference was a Degen-DE797, a similar radio to a Degen DE333 (but in red with a black face plate), which is similar to this model, Kaito KA200. ALL models work exactly the same, and ALL have the controls in the same places on each radio. I wouldn't be surprised if the Kaito and Degen radios are manufactured in the same factory. The difference is with the tuners, and the sound quality.I'll concede that the Kaito is probably fine for carrying to a ball game, and all you care about is the local sports program play-by-play while you're watching the game.. It mostly works for that function. You can pick up your local AM station Don't bother with DX aspirations; this one won't do it for pulling an AM stations hundreds of miles away. Granted, it does NOT have that click-click-click DSP step tune noise. That feature gets old real quick. The audio quality is NOT tinny, but, it's just flat. The Degen models had a richer tone.I'll be honest. The sound quality was better on the Degen model. I checked the reviews on the Kaito KA200 and thought it might be a better choice and value. Unfortunately, it wasn't as good. And, on FM, the strong station does tend to bleed over onto other frequencies. You don't want that. Again, the tonal quality was better on the Degen models.I was expecting it to be better. This one was just okay. It's still a good radio for your emergency kit needs. Before I had the Degen model, I had a Sony ICF-S10MK2. That one is still the winner of all, and it's a 20 year old radio.*****I tested the radio again on Saturday morning, four days after the first impression. Here's the follow up, with a picture of the two radios. *****I really WANTED to like this radio (Kaito KA200) OVER the one in RED (Degen DE797) on the left in the picture.I tested it on the day I received it, and four days later, to decide if it was worth keeping. The Kaito KA200 is sufficient for a radio checklist item for your emergency kit .You are getting what you paid for. Here's where it changes:I can pull in weaker FM stations with the Degen radio, like a low range station that I usually can only get when I'm close to that station's physical location, and possibly within the city limits near that locale. With the Kaito, it's limited. It's easy to pick up a station in nearby San Jose, CA, but a Redwood City station is not an option. As for an AM station, the strong station comes in (KGO), and local AM, but not the weaker stations.Although the tuner is smoother and easier to operate with the Kaito, the strong stations bleed into other frequency ranges. It's noticeable on FM, not so much on AM.The tonal quality on Kaito is okay for local AM talk or sports radio. If those are your requirements, this will do the job. On the Degen, I was impressed with the sound quality for a local jazz station and classical stations. It also did well for a rock station To add, I can't tune into those stations with the Kaito. For a cheap radio, I wanted this to be a bit better than almost mediocre. Some might argue that I'm being too picky. They might be right. My pursuit was not just in finding a good small radio that, not only can have the purpose of a checklist item for an emergency kit, but to give to friends for their needs, and that they could enjoy as well as I do. They respect my judgement. They know I have an interest in small radios. Even if it's an inexpensive item, they trust that it will be a choice that I took time to investigate the quality of the item.I don't want to let them down by giving them something that I did not like.If there are no other options, the Kaito KA200 is on the list of good things to have at your disposal. That's not true at the moment. However, IF you have to choose, find a comparable Degen model.
