This projector exceeded our expectations in every way. And when you read on, you'll see that we had pretty high expectations already. The picture from this projector is stunning. This is the best value in home theater running. There are plenty of 5 star reviews already, and everyone else pretty much summed it up before me. But they are all true. Here's why:
This is my 4th projector:
1st was an Epson Home 10, standard def (before bluray). I thought it was the greatest thing ever. Then the blue LCD panel went on it (look it up, it happens). A friend had the same projector but upgraded to a LCD tv, so I bought his Home 10. 3rd was an Epson MovieMate 72, a 720p lcd projector with built in DVD player. Although it had a convenient built-in DVD player, it was coupled to a PS3 via HDMI so we were getting a 720p picture out of it. I thought THAT was the coolest thing ever, until about 30 minutes ago.
We are projecting on a 120" diagonal very reflective (but not the most reflective) pull-down screen. Our living room is bathed in evening sunlight. Prior to 30 minutes ago, we had to wait until sundown to watch movies. The MovieMate 72 couldn't compete against the sun hitting the screen. But it looked great at night. At the magnification we used, you could see individual pixels but the picture was still pretty cool. Well, not anymore.
The 8350 absolutely completely blows away the MovieMate 72. The difference from 720p to 1080p was amazing in our living room at 120". The PS3 menu is as crisp as it was meant to be. I am not kidding when I say the 1080p makes the MovieMate's 720p image look like SD. Other reviewers say that the incremental upgrade from 720p to 1080p wasn't that great. In our living room, it was astounding.
In addition to the stunningly clear picture, we can now watch movies during the day.
Besides the awesome picture (which, really, should be the primary consideration), the 8350 has a number of other design improvements:
1. lighted remote
2. remembers previous input (finally!)
3. gamma and brightness buttons on remote (not buried in menus).
4. many more picture options, but ironically
5. no need for more picture setting options. default settings are perfect!
6. more color mode options for varying room lighting conditions
7. near silent operation (especially compared to the MovieMate). The person sitting next to it can't tell it's on.
8. new technology should prevent the blue lcd panel burnout problem.
9. longer zoom allows for further placement (instead of middle of room, projector can be in the back).
10. more lens shift.
The only downside is this thing is HUGE. The little projector table we are using (soon to be ceiling mounted, the MovieMate doesn't have a ceiling mount option) is completely filled by the 8350, about 50% more footprint than the MovieMate, which is already large by projector standards because it contains a DVD player.
(although there is no keystone, which I would have thought would be another downside, that is actually good because keystone, although it gives you a square image, takes away image quality. Better to square up the projector and then use lens-shift to get it centered on the screen. I wouldn't be surprised if the keystone is what took away from our 720p projector's image quality).
I can't let this review go without saying something about the Avatar bluray (that's what we used to test it). I've seen that movie about 15 times, 7 of them in Imax. Well, when Jake came up out of the river by the waterfall, we (wife, son, and I) were pretty sure the living room was going to fill with river water, because the water rushing toward the viewer looked so real; we all just laughed with glee. I've been through the entire projector lifecycle (480p, 720p, 1080p), and each time was an exciting revelation. This time was no different.
Get this projector. 5 minutes into Avatar and you will not care how much you spent on it. 60" plasma? No thanks, I have a 120" plasma!
And I can finally put the 720p/1080p argument to rest. At 120", 1080p is the only way to go!
UPDATE 11/9/2011: Still going strong! no bulb issues, using it 3-4 nights a week. superb! It's great playing PS3 games on the big screen. If a bulb goes out call customer service, they'll probably replace it free of charge. Pick up the phone first. If they don't help you, then you can post a negative review.
And I can tell you I'm still just as excited about this Epson as I was when I first unpacked it ten months ago. Since I got this, I've used it nearly every day for hours a day to play my PlayStation 3 on (more on that in a moment). I've watched Blu-Ray HD movies on it. And I've plugged my computer into it to use it as a monitor when I wanted to use a screen bigger than the 46" Sony TV I use as a regular monitor. In an attempt to give you as the buyer a good rounded idea of what this projector can do I've broken the review into four parts: Gaming, HD Movies, Computer, and Technical.
Gaming: I play PS3 games all the time, in fact I use the projector for that a lot more than anything else. Being a fan of Wipeout HD (an extremely high-speed hovercraft game that runs at 1080P) I was worried a projector wouldn't be able to keep up with the framerate (Wipeout runs at 60 frames per second, which is much faster than most games) and/or the breakneck pace (when you are going slow in a race you're at a simulated 100 to 200 miles per hour speed and it can get up past the speed of sound in a fast one). This projector HANDLES without a single trace. Realistic, unbelievably sharp picture, the response time is so fast that there is no way to tell it's a projector and not a TV you're playing on (and I am hyper-sensitive to response time because I write extremely fast electronic music, so if I tap a button and the instrument or system I'm using doesn't respond immediately in real time it drives me crazy), and it consistently delivers. I play using the projector about twelve feet back from the wall, which gives me about a 120" or so screen, and it's pretty amazing. If you're willing to sit close enough that the projected screen fills your field of view, it's literally like being inside the game world completely. Total immersion. A few of the other games I've played on this are Apache Air Assault, Crysis 2, Borderlands, Killzone 3, Portal 2, Skyrim, and Aliens Vs. Predator. The total immersion this projector creates has actually caused me to gravitate towards playing a lot more First Person Shooter (FPS) games than I ever have before, because it's literally like being inside the game world. When I first got this projector, I had purchased Killzone 3 (an FPS) at the same time, and used it for the first time with Killzone 3. I'm not kidding, it actually made me dizzy and kind of nauseous the first few times I played it because it was so realistic my eyes were convinced I was really in the game. So if anyone tells you projectors aren't good for gaming, they haven't tried this projector. On a side note, when Skyrim came out a few weeks back I moved the projector into the living room to get a larger projected image (it filled my entire living room wall) and it was actually really disorienting how realistic it looked. Awesome!
HD Movies: I've watched a pretty decent handful of HD movies on this projector, including Pandorum, the remasted Aliens Quadrilogy Blu-Rays, Predators, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and Wall-E. (I've watched a lot more but I'm not going to clunk up this review listing every flippin' movie ;). I can tell you that it's literally frightening how clear and beautiful the picture is. I thought my Sony Bravia TV looked amazing with HD movies - until I watched them on this Epson. Now the Bravia looks almost crappy to me and that's saying a lot - the Bravia has a great picture, but this Epson just rips it apart. Movies look so good that the first two HD movies I watched I kept fiddling with the settings on the projector until I did some research and realized that the things in the picture I thought were the projector screwing up were actually the projector accurately reproducing every single visible pixel of recorded image from the original film the movie was shot on. You can always turn on the image smoothing features and the projector will get rid of those, but I thought it was amazing how much detail this thing is capable of.
Computer: Off the bat I'll say I don't run games on my computer (I have a PS3...why would I need to?) and I don't do much that's graphics intensive on my computer, mainly just web surf and some light art production software. But I will say everything sure looks great on this projector :)
Technical: If you're technically minded (you want to be able to control and manipulate every detail of the image) then this projector delivers the goods there too. There's options to twiddle, tweak, and twirble (technical term) every possible thing you could want to mess with all laid out in an easily accessible and logical menu system. An example is that I play games at both 1080 and 720 HD settings and for some games depending on how the graphics were programmed I prefer to switch between two very different customized settings (that change tiny details like how sharp thin lines are and how sharp thick lines are, or whether or not the Super White function is on or off, etc). The projector makes it so easy to switch settings it's glorious. On the other hand, if you're not a tech head and just want to be able to "turn the thing on and it looks good", you can do that too with very little setup. The only (and I really do mean THE ONLY) possible down side to this projector is that movies and games that run in Standard Definition (SD) aka PlayStation 2, regular Xbox, and DVD's, look pretty much like crap. It could be that I'm spoiled filthy by the beautiful picture this thing kicks out in HD, but SD content really seems to look wretched on it. But if you're spending the money to buy a 1080P projector I really hope you aren't wasting your time watching SD content on it :)
The Kill Shot: When I bought this projector it was twelve hundred bucks. As of the time of this review it's a little over a thousand dollars. If you match that price to nearly any HDTV that is capable of 1080P (full HD) and has a big enough screen to even be worth bothering with, this projector clearly comes out as the obvious choice above and beyond a TV. This thing can kick out a screen up to 300" in size - so huge you could actually use a theater screen with it in the right setup.
So, in conclusion, if you are looking for a centerpiece for your A/V rig, you're a gamer wanting to take the Ultimate Step in making your gaming rig the ultimate in enjoyment, or a movie buff who wants to wallow in their HD cinema, this projector is the last stop on the road to anywhere and the last one you'll ever need.
