You do need a wired internet connection to set up the camera, then you can tell the software to go wireless, it will find your wireless connection, and install it as a wireless net cam. If you want to go back to wired, all you need to do is run the easy setup program and tell it to use the wired ethernet connection. They thought of everything. I have used D-link network products for a long time, so I was not surprised at how good this camera is.
Update 7/3/2014. Cameras are still working great and I am very pleased, but there are a couple of things you should know.
1. DOES NOT WORK WITH ANY LINUX. That's bad because I HATE clunky slow problem filled WINDOWS, but I have dual OS so I can still use the cameras with Windows, but I hate it. Dlink needs to get with the program and make the camera compatible with Linux (the issue is the Dlink cloud program, not the internet. It will connect with Dlink.com but you cannot pull up the camera as it gives you the Java error even though you have Java on your Linux system)
2. Video speed and quality depend on your ISP UPLOAD SPEED, not download speed. The camera is uploading to your device so if you have a download speed of 20 MBS but an upload speed of less than 1.5 MBS, the video will work, but it will be sort of jumpy at ALL resolutions. Even at upload speed of 750 MBS (3.0 dowload) the image is super sharp and detailed.
3. The setup when you connect to the camera (which can be done remotely), is exceptional and fast, and offers a ton of options to get the most out of your camera.
At night it is totally black if you do not have a light on, BUT - I have a camera that shows the front of the house and I can see cars drive by and their headlights will actually allow me to see what is in the road etc. Inside a few nightlights give enough light to see what is going on inside the house.
IMPORTANT NOTE! Do not buy the model DCS-930 LB1. It has a constant problem of being affected by quick power outages during a storm. After the lights blink at your location, you WILL NOT be able to view the camera with your PC. You will be able to view the camera from a tablet PC or Ipad. I have no idea why that is possible, but it has happened twice in a few months. The other cameras DCS-930L do not have that problem. You have to unplug the camera, wait 10 minutes, then plug it back in to get the 930B working correctly again. Of course if you are hundreds of miles from the camera, that is a problem. Must be poor circuitry. Probably why you don't see the LB1 for sale on Amazon any more.
UPDATE - My 4 cameras are getting harder and harder to access through MyDlink cloud. They show up as fine and working but some just won't pull up remotely. If I access them locally they work fine (even wireless). It is taking a long time for remote access and one time one camera won't come up and another time another camera won't come up. I use multiple devices - Android, Windows 10, Windows Xp and they are all starting to mess up so it is not the OS. I think Dlink needs to add some bandwidth or something. They used to work fine.
ANOTHER UPDATE - Here we go again. It says it supports Chrome, Firefox and Explorer 11. It does NOT work with Microsoft Edge. Since the "maintenance" ONCE again it will not work with Firefox (unsupported browser message) and Chrome will not pull up the image (retry over and over again). Only Explorer 11 works now. This has happened many times before. If you try and access the camera settings in Explorer it will say "unsafe site with no certificate" or something like that, and later versions of Explorer will not allow you to proceed to one of those sites. It will not support the older versions that do allow you to proceed. My D-link is obviously trying to get out of desktop users and force everyone to look at their images on a 7" Ipad screen.
BUY SOMETHING ELSE because I see my cameras going into the garbage within a year because I will not be able to use them.
Their browser support and My D-Link software is garbage.
RUN AWAY FROM THIS CAMERA. Buy something else instead. I am sick of this routine.
Initially bought three of the DCS-931L's, then accidentally bought two of the older DCS-930L's. They are for all intents and purposes the same in functionality, though I initially found the 931L's software easier to use. Stick with 931's.
At first I had pretty good luck setting these cameras up with my old Buffalo Tech router. You hard wire them first, run the setup wizard (which you have to download as a zip file and is not real easy to get going), then you can WPS the cameras wirelessly. Move them and install anyplace. Range is surprisingly good.
The MyDlink was ok to work with. This is the online portal to your cameras. The smartphone app counterpart was pretty good at sending me notifications of movement--at first. Then, suddenly, I started losing feeds from the cameras. Pretty soon every one was dead. Must have uninstalled and reinstalled them a dozen times. And then I lost home WIFI. So, I assumed it was a bad router. What luck. So, I ordered a D-Link 855 model, more than anything because of "zero configuration" with their cameras.
Installed the new router and everything seemed fine. Then the same thing started happening. I could wirelessly configure the cameras straight from the router, but the IP addresses of the cameras were being assigned to other devices, and this caused all sorts of problems. I kept uninstalling and reinstalling, trying to reserve IP addresses in the router... Then I'd get them working only to find them slowly dropping out again. It seems to help to reserve the IP addresses of your other devices first, then install the cameras.
I finally came to the conclusion that the way to install them is first to wirelessly WPS them from the router to the camera. Then I'd go into D-ViewCam (this is their proprietary PC program you use to record motion to your drive as evidence of trespass or burglary). In D-ViewCam I would manually "insert" the camera in the settings area using the IP address assigned by the router. Then I'd hop over to MyDlink and find the camera via "zero config" and set it up there online. That seemed to eliminate lost feeds, and for several days it has run with no problem. Most of the time the software couldn't "find" the camera during a scan, so I opted to key them in manually. It's easy. On a few of the cameras they still would not "connect". But if I walked away for a few hours, bingo! It was as if it just took some time for the software to recognize them. One other thing, you need D-ViewCam to change the camera resolutions. I could not do this in MyDlink.
There are a few quirks still. MyDlink app has stopped giving me motion alerts. I can define areas of the feed to detect motion in D-ViewCam, but no longer in MyDlink web. It just shows a black screen. It will let you define a zone, but since you can't see what the image is it is of little use. I think this is why I'm not getting alerts via the app. I don't know what happened and am looking into this. But the D-ViewCam does record motion to my hard drive. By the way, I am using a USB external drive hidden in the basement in case someone steals my computer!
Anyway, to sum up, the cameras do work. Picture quality is good enough to make out faces and cars coming up the drive. I can keep an eye on the dogs quite easily using the smartphone app, though the latter does require a good strong fast connection. Otherwise, it just times out. I really like the D-Link routers. Coming from years of the Buffalo Tech, they are much easier to configure with their outstanding web based portal. Five stars there. And setting up the cameras is nice because you don't have to use the MyDlink software, which I found buggy and hard to install, or a LAN cable.
I have two cameras inside, three outside under the eaves, and one out in my carport. I have the repeaters on the 931's active, but even when they are off the range to other cameras straight from the router is good (about three walls, one brick, and 70 feet total). I plan on adding more cameras, including the IR versions for dark areas. So far the cameras have held up outside in below freezing temps and high humidity. They stand out like a sore thumb, but I figure if they get stolen it's too late. The video has already been captured. Because of this and their relative low cost, I have not taken measures to hide them. Hell, I want the thieves to put their faces in them so I get a close view!
It has been a frustrating two weeks messing with these buggers. But once I got the flow down, I am happy.
