I would definitely recommend this mattress to any budget conscious buyer looking for ...
I would definitely recommend this mattress to any budget conscious buyer looking for just a basic mattress for themselves or a guest bed. Please see the pictures for the details. I have taken pictures of the whole process. First you have to carry what looks like a blue body bag into your house. Next, you shimmy the bag down the outside of the mattress. There is no need to cut the bag off, it comes off just fine with a little patience. I decided to go with the "stand the bag up, bear hug and squat technique" but do whatever works for you. Inside of the bag you will find a plastic wrapped rolled-up mattress inside of an outer plastic sleeve. It is okay to cut this off without fear. The magic doesn't happen until you reach the next layer of plastic. I cut the end off and then slid the scissors down the bag until it opened. DO NOT CUT THE PLASTIC UNDERNEATH!! Next you will come to the rolled-up mattress itself. It should be secured with three pieces of clear tape that hole the roll together. Cut the three pieces of tape. As you cut, you will hear a pop as the mattress is released from the pressure of the roll. You will only need to barely cut the tape pieces and the mattress will do the rest. Then you unroll the mattress where you want it to be. If you are using this for a futon, then it would be best to open the futon to the flat bed formation before you do this. Trust me it will be a pain to move the mattress later, it's pretty heavy.Okay, now here comes the fun part. Once the mattress is in place, position your cut on the side seam so that the mattress can expand fully and you can get out of the way after you cut it open quickly. IMMEDIATELY after you make your cut into the plastic the mattress will start to expand so slide the scissors up the side of the mattress plastic quickly and get out of the way. It should only take about a minute to fully inflate and you can continue cutting away the plastic. Mine opened up with the tags facing up so I flipped it when it was done expanding. If this doesn't bother you then forget about it. Yes, there is a chemical smell, it came from a factory. No, it's not that bad and it went away after 3-4 days.In all I am happy with this mattress. I am using it flat on a full size metal frame that I got from Walmart and it does not slide around on it at all. It also holds up well to me sitting in the same spot for a while. I hope this review helps you out, I noticed no one else had posted any pictures of the black one. This review is of the black version which is a true black, not grayish black or anything.

Top reviews from the United States

About a year ago, we got a mission style futon to replace our 20-year-old worn-out sofa. Our house is a Craftsman style bungalow, so the mission style futon fits nicely. However, the mattress that came with the futon was 4" thin and was never really comfortable. In a short amount of time, you could feel the bars of the futon when sitting, so I began searching for an improved replacement. Of those I found as possibilities, I read all the reviews and finally decided on this mattress.

This mattress had mostly good/great reviews, but there were some negative and scary reviews: fabric tears, tufting plastic breaking, mattress splitting down the center, bad smells (mildew and chemical), and the worst (but in only a very few reviews): bed bugs. I read every single review, weighed pros and cons, talked it over with my husband, and we decided to give it a shot.

It arrived very quickly. We decided to open it on our front porch in case of strong smell or bed bugs. The box was sealed with glue, and it was difficult to break into (we didn't want to use any sharp implements for fear of stabbing/slicing the mattress). Once we won our fight with the box, the rolled-up mattress was wrapped in a sheet of plastic, and then the mattress itself was vacuumed sealed inside more plastic.

We unrolled the mattress and I was surprised at how easily it unrolled. We then liberated it from the vacuum seal (still on our porch). It, again surprisingly, immediately fluffed up. The smell, which was a common new textile smell, was so minimal, my husband didn't even smell it until he buried his face into it. I have a very keen sense of smell, and while I did smell it (without burying my face), it was exceptionally mild. (I'm wondering if some colors have a more intense smell than others.) We then unzipped the one end of the fabric cover and searched all the folds, nooks, and crannies and found no sign of any unwelcome guests. We then closely scrutinized the piping all around, all of the tufted areas, and the zipper seam (inside and out) and there was still no sign of unwanted hitchhikers.

We were going to let it air out on the porch, but the smell was so minimal, we decided to go ahead and put it in place.

It is heavy, but not horrible. It's more awkward than anything. But my husband and I easily carried it inside and put it in place. Bending/folding it into the seated position was also a little awkward, but again, not bad.

Then we sat on it. I'm still sitting on it. Not only is it a major improvement in comfort, its stability makes it easier to sit down and then get up from the former thin, flimsy mattress. As far as sleeping, I haven't opened the futon to the bed position, but just stretching out across the seated position, it's very nice. It gives me great lumbar support, and I have a bad back. Laying on my side is also comfortable.

For the money, I think it's a great buy.

If anything significant changes after we've had this for awhile, I will update this review. I may even update it if nothing changes. I hope our review helps others in making their choice.

I had to replace my old futon mattress recently, and before buying the Dorel futon, I had purchased one from an online store that specialized in products that were excess in inventory. I had purchased other products from that store before, but this was the worst. So I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this mattress, especially since the price points were almost identical. It's a firm mattress, you can barely feel the coils, and the foam is a little lumpy at first but it evens out great!

PROS:
Fast, free (prime) shipping.
Very reasonably priced.
Packaging is water proof and easy to get in the house. Also, there are lots of silica gel packets which keep the mattress from getting moldy in said packaging (yeah for not cutting corners).
Beautiful beige microfiber cover.
The 8" mattress is a full 8 inches, most likely to the straight side seams.
Firm, with bounce and you barely feel the coils.
DOES NOT SMELL. (lesson from other purchase You may smell something so faint if you bury your face in it, but this really isn't awful and I'm very sensitive to smells.
HAS Tags. who sells mattresses without tags? seriously. another lesson)
Thick and firm, you barely make a dent in the mattress when you sit in it, but it folds really well in the seated position.
You could technically take the cover off and wash it (unlike the other mattress, which was only 20 dollars cheaper) this cover covers a mesh enclosed mattress. But I'll probably be putting a waterproof pad and an additional cover to this baby anyway (which is in the end why I had to purchase a new futon.)

CONS:
The back of the mattress is made of cheap black polyester, like the stuff you lay on mulch for landscaping but better. So you will probably need to get an additional cover for the mattress if this bothers you.
It's 8" thick. So you will definitely need to reconsider a custom mattress cover because the one I purchased from the Walton family will not work. It's a great cover, it's just not deep enough for this mattress.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Super nice, comfy, and sturdy
Reviewed in Canada on March 1, 2023
I've bought this about 2 years ago, and it was the best choice. Very sturdy, nice wood colour, and comfy. I've bought it with the thicker mattress, it is harder to put it upright because it's heavier, but I have the best sleep on it, the firmness is just perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get if futon is more often a couch
Reviewed in Canada on July 8, 2021
I was a bit scared of the previous reviews, but I needed a new futon mattress that would withstand the occasional protests from my aging cats. I went with the encased coils because the previous mattress was too much like an overstuffed pillow and I wanted something of better quality. It's been in the upright position for about a week now, and it's fantastic. It was a bit of a struggle to get upright - like, you might want to have 2 people instead of trying to do it yourself like I did - but it's very comfortable as a couch. I won't be using it in the bed position very often so I can't say what that's like right now, but it feels very much like it would be like a normal bed mattress. It came all rolled up in a large box and inflated on the frame.

I wouldn't recommend this for someone who raises and lowers their futon daily. The overstuffed pillow would have greater flexibility in that department. For those of us who use a futon like a couch more often, this would be great.

Reviewed in Canada on July 28, 2020
I bought the dark brown and the colour is gorgeous and the material seems to be of a good quality. I purchased this because it has the mattress style coils that my last one had which was very comfortable but this one needs more cushion over the coils as you can feel the coils when you sit on it. It's not awful or anything, just not nearly as comfortable as I was expecting. However it's a great price and rather thick and placing an old comforter over it if it's to be used as a bed would definitely help!
