The iron itself feels pretty substantial for a portable model. It's lightweight enough to not cost you extra to put it in a suitcase on a plane, but it's heavy enough to get the job done.
I like that it's one piece instead of having some kind of flimsy folding handle or something.
It has a dial with several different temperature settings, and they seem pretty accurate.
It gets hot quickly. After turning it on, it's ready to fuse bonding in less than a minute. (That needs alot of heat.)
This may seem minor, but it stands up on its own well. Alot of irons tip forward easily or require me to flip the cord all around to get it out of the way so it will stand up. This one is easy to just set back down with no worries, and it's stable. It doesn't fall even if I bump it while working in a cramped space.
I have pretty large hands for a woman, and it does seem a little small for my hands. It's okay and would probably be good for most women, but it would be nice to be able to get a better grip on it. The channels where my fingers are supposed to go when I grip it just aren't deep enough. I also find the small dial to be a bit difficult. I usually only use it on high so it's not a big deal, but the small dial would be a little hard for me to control to get to a specific setting. I really don't really consider those negatives because small size is just a function of portable size.
I only use it dry, so I can't comment that on the steam function.
All in all, it's almost perfect as a dedicated sewing/crafting iron, and I imagine based on my experience with it, that it would be great for travel or even as the only iron for someone who doesn't have a frequent need or alot of space for an iron (like college kids in dorms). It's a good product, and I'm surprisingly pleased with my purchase.
Gets pretty hot. Doe not have an off switch, Wish that could be added in the near future.
I use it for sewing small projects. I really like the size.
Ok, so I wrote to the customer service requesting a replacement with a non-defective piece or a return (in which case I was planning to buy a new piece). They have arranged to send me a replacement via overnight shipping. Response was fast! Good Job Customer Service
Previous review (3/2/2016)
Just tested the new Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot 800 Watt Compact Travel Iron. Positives: It is really small and compact-perfect size and weight for travel. For its size, it does a reasonable good job of ironing/ removing creases - I tested it on a thin fabric. As long as you do not expect the same results that a larger professional iron would give, you should be happy. Now the negatives: You get what you pay for - It is rather cheaply made. Mine had rough edges visible near the light and came with a small hole (!!) in the blue rubber on top left hand side. There seemed to be some stains on the bottom (soleplate) - not sure if it was due to improper packing or if I was sent a used product. Next, when the iron heats up in the steam mode, it spits water. Overall: Not a great product, but not bad either. It would help if the indicator light did a better job with indicating that the iron is still on (it switches off after a few minutes and there is no way to tell if the iron is on or off-this can be dangerous especially if one forgets to unplug it!). The iron does get a little hot when it is set to the maximum setting. Finally, I wish they would check the pieces before packaging because I bought it to on the request of someone overseas who travels a LOT. I was requested to buy it and test it before bringing it to them, which I just did. I am supposed to bring it for them when I travel to their country in 10 days, but I am a little embarrassed because of the poor craftsmanship of this piece they have sent! I will try to replace with a new one.
