One of the most striking features of this antenna is its sleek design. The black and white color options allow it to blend seamlessly with my home decor, making it unobtrusive and stylish. Its ultra-thin profile means it can be easily mounted on a wall or window without being an eyesore.
Setting up the Winegard FL-5000 was a breeze. After connecting it to my TV and scanning for channels, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of channels I was able to receive, including high-VHF and UHF channels. The picture quality was outstanding, rivaling that of cable and satellite services.
The 35-mile range of the antenna has enabled me to receive a wide variety of local channels, expanding my viewing options significantly. I was particularly impressed with the reception, which remained stable and clear, even during unfavorable weather conditions.
In conclusion, the Winegard FL-5000 FlatWave Digital Indoor HDTV Antenna is a top-notch product that delivers exceptional performance at a reasonable price. If you're looking to cut the cord and still enjoy crystal clear HDTV programming, this antenna is the perfect choice. Give it a try, and I'm confident you'll be as satisfied as I am.
- I live in a metro area of a large city where the main broadcasting towers are ~15 miles away
- Based on TVFool.com, majority of the stations have a NM rating above 45
- I only need it for one TV
- Combining above three factors, I bought the non-amp version. My research indicates most non-amp antenna is capable of handling this range. Amped version can both boost signal, but as well as noise
Result:
- Set up is easy, takes 5 minutes
- The reception quality is amazing. I was blown away by the full HD quality, it does appear that some OTA channels has BETTER quality than cable
- Channels: I am able to receive ALL channels listed by TVFool, including major ones such as NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, etc. (all in HD). I counted 35+ of them (there are others but unlikely to watch on regular basis)
- DVR Function: one of the areas that today’s OTA market is still struggling is TV listing. I have seen people finding different solutions including 3rd party DVR, or subscribing to a listing service with a monthly fee. Personally, I have a Samsung SmartTV, which has built-in turner. It also allows me to add certain channels to “Favorite” and create a customized filter to show favorite channels only. The remote has a TV Listing button that will show you TV listings the same way your cable set-top box does. Granted, it has some lag time (normally between 5~10 sec), but given all these are for free, it is something I can definitely live with
As internet streaming services, tablets, smart phones, smart electronic devices become more and more popular, and tech giants like Google, MS, Apple start to offer integrating your home computer, game console, TV, and other electronic devices with internet streaming, the decline of traditional Cable TV has begun. More and more people find their way to enjoy contents via Streaming + Digital OTA, for two main reasons: cost and freedom. Gone are those days you were “served” with 200 cable channels which you pay premium but never watch …
Have been 3 weeks since I installed this antenna on my big TV in the living room. I see no difference between the Mohu antenna and this winegard one (they look very much alike. Winegard is a little bigger with longer cord). I live in the 2nd floor of a 8-stories condo building close to the city. Right in front of my unit is an intersection of major streets and power lines. I taped the antenna to the wall facing the street, and get decent images most of the time. However, occasionally I get some interference. Not sure if it's from the traffic or the power lines. I think this is as good as an indoor antenna can get - unless I go with a powerful outdoor one, which is against my condo policy.
Overall I am satisfy with the results - got most of the basic channels, with high def. For less than $40 I'd say it's a good product.
Top reviews from other countries
El cable de la antena es bastante largo y ayuda mucho si lo quieres poner en algún lugar discreto o si no tienes buena recepción junto a la tele.
This FlatWave antenna from Winegard is not cheap and my suggestion is to first run the TVFool analysis for your location. If no channels are printed on a green background then an indoor antenna is not the way to go. If you have some channels on a green background the next step is to borrow an indoor antenna (old bunny ears) and try. If you can receive some UHF signals with the bunny ears then you are in a good spot and you may consider this antenna.
In free space this is one of the better non amplified indoor antennas out there - especially in the UHF band, but it also performs well in the VHF-HI band. It looks good and is well made. The best place to mount any indoor antenna is right against a window facing the transmitting towers and this antenna is ideally constructed for that purpose. If that is not an option you may also have success mounting it on a wall. Keep in mind that any wiring or metal piping behind the wall will affect the performance and you may have to move the antenna around to different spots to optimize the location. Do a complete scan on your TV for every location that you try. This is time consuming but it is unfortunately the only way to do this.
I tested the FlatWave at my single dwelling home and it performed very well as an indoor antenna. However, when I tried it at its intended spot in a downtown apartment, the results were much worse, even though that apartment is significantly closer to the TV transmitters than my house. So in my case I was hoping for better results but then again, the specific ground floor apartment is certainly not in a good spot for an indoor antenna.
