There are two sleeping bags in the set. The 30 degree bag is great for chilly summer nights that drop below 60 and still keeps you comfortable on a spring or fall night near 30. The -10 bag is more than enough insulation for temperatures at or below 32 degrees and keeps you comfortable down to -10 (i have tested this in Guelph Ontario). when you combine the two bags using their heavy duty snaps you can sleep in temperatures ranging from say 20 all the way down to -30 or as i said before, with the right clothing maybe even as low as -50. Who wants to sleep in -50 degrees atmosphere?
The Bivvy is a well built single person shelter. It protects the user from not only wind but water and it does so flawlessly. No frills. Just a gore tex tube with a hood for you to stare at the stars on a clear night and a zipper down the side for entry and exit. It is printed with woodland camo which isn't the worst thing in the world. i am actually beginning to like the look of it.
All in all this sleep system could replace your tent! It can keep you warm and dry from temperatures ranging from 60 degrees fahrenheit all the way down to -50 degrees fahrenheit. I have become accustomed to leaving my tent at home so that i can sleep on the ground staring at the sky. When there are trees around i will sleep in my Eno hammock using both the bivvy and one or both bags (depending on the temperature).
When all three pieces are packed into the included stuff sack it is definitely large and heavy. It is tough to compress the stuff sack with all three pieces in it down less than 12" wide and 14" tall. The combined weight is 9 lbs. That is excessive for sleep gear but keep in mind you will rarely need to use all three pieces at once. I have come to find the black -10 bag ideal for winter camping and the green 30 degree bag ideal for most spring and fall camping but great for summer camping (light, small pack size and perfect temperature control. The black bag is pretty thick loft and so it weighs the most out all three (i'm not certain of the exact weight) and doesnt pack down nearly as well as the green bag. All three pieces snap together so that you only need to zip the bivvy and you're still kept warm, with easy access in and out. Its a great deal!
Just buy it. You will love and appreciate it.
The sleeping bags and bivy are roomy (I am 5'10", 160 lbs). I find I am able to roll over on my side easily without falling off my air mattress.
The zippers work so smoothly that little pressure is required to open the sleeping bags and bivy if you need to get out fast.
The bivy is heavy duty. I plan on using the bivy instead of a tent this year.
The compression bag for the overall system is also heavy duty. I use it to loosely store only the bivy and patrol sleeping bag. I use the plastic bag the system shipped in to store the intermediate sleeping bag separately. I have tried compressing the whole system in the compression bag and it works fine. The key to using the compression bag is to use your body weight on your knees to squeeze out the air and then tighten the straps to hold everything together. If you use the straps to force out the air you may damage the bag. I can compress everything down to about a cubic foot (a little over 28 liters). This is too big for backpacking, but handy for storing the system in a car (for emergencies).
Some reviewers write that the system is not meant for backpacking, and this is true. However, why would you ever use the whole system? The whole system together is good to -50 F (according to an instruction label attached to the bag, while wearing a base layer, i.e. long underwear, hat and socks), which is little nippy for most people's taste. I plan on using the bivy and the patrol sleeping bag (with some sort of sleeping pad underneath) this summer. In the fall and spring I will use the bivy and the patrol bag (while wearing a base layer and, of course, a sleeping pad underneath), and if I decide to go winter camping I will take the bivy and the intermediate bag (again wearing a base layer and using a pad underneath). If you leave the compression bag at home and only take the system parts you need, then you can pack a light and compact sleeping system.
The patrol bag compresses so small that I can fit it in my Maxpedition Condor II backpack with room to spare. I use a small stuff sack I purchased at Walmart to hold the patrol sleeping bag. I lash the bivy to the top of the pack with bungees.
