The convenience of not having to heat up the larger crockpot for a single serving is a time-saver and energy-efficient. The smaller size doesn't compromise on performance; in fact, it excels at evenly heating my meals to perfection.
Its versatility has made it a kitchen essential for me. Whether I'm reviving last night's dinner or experimenting with new recipes in smaller quantities, this crock pot delivers consistently delicious results. The ease of use and simple cleanup make it a joy to incorporate into my daily routine.
For anyone who values portion control and wants a hassle-free way to warm up smaller servings, this single-serve crock pot is the perfect solution. It has certainly earned its place as a reliable and efficient kitchen companion in my home. Highly recommended for those who appreciate both convenience and precision in their meal preparation!
UPDATE (12/16/13): The warmer is still going strong! I have two inserts and alternate them almost daily. Still love having this to use at work. :)
UPDATE (7/25/12): One of the commenters posted a link where you can buy extra food containers for $5 off the crockpot website. Sweet!
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Pros:
* It looks cool. It made a couple of my co-workers "ooh" and "aah".
* It is compact, light, and easy to carry.
* It warms food great as long as you remember to plug it in! On average, it warmed my food to comfortable eating temperature within 1 ½ hours. This has included all kinds of foods from basic pureed soup to liver and onions. (I like liver).
* There is no smell from the food until you take the lid off to eat.
* The inner bowl cools quickly. I unplug the warmer, leave the inner container in the warmer while I eat so I don't have to mess with how to remove a hot metal bowl. By the time I finish eating my lunch, the inner bowl is cool enough at the top for me to remove it.
* I like the fact that I don't have to use the work microwave. It saves me time because I used to take a Lysol wipe to the office kitchen counter and a soapy paper towel to the microwave before using it. My office has a high population of folks who bring their own lunch (maybe around 70), which is great for budgets, but not so great when you get skeeved out over the residual gunk that was all over the microwave over the course of the week. With this little warmer, I put my food in the container, and plug it in and it's done. I rinse out the container at work, but it goes in the dishwasher at home. I save 5 to 10 minutes of pre-cleaning the office kitchen space, and I don't have to wait until it's past the "lunch rush".
Cons:
* It would be great if you could buy extra containers for it. I could see myself packing a whole week's worth of containers on Sunday night. There are also some days when I work past dinner, and it would be nice to be able to bring food in a second container. I did buy a second warmer, but I'd rather pay half the price and get extra inner containers.
* Don't heat spinach in it. Turns out bitter.
Other information:
* The lid on the inner container usually pops up slightly after 10 minutes of warming. The instructions did note this might happen and to not try to put the lid back on.
Based on a couple of other reviews stating concerns about bacteria and food safety, I decided to do a little experiment. I put tap water in the inner container and tested the temperature of water every hour for three hours. I also decided to test the temperature of actual food, again testing the temperature every hour for 3 hours. I used a Thermapen Instant Read digital thermometer to measure the temperatures. The results are in the table below. According to the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) website, precooked foods need to be reheated to 165 °F when using a microwave. The FDA website states that hot foods at picnics should be kept at 140 °F. As you can see from the results I got, the water temperature surpassed the 165°F within an hour. The food surpassed the 140°F within 2 hours, and was just under 165 °F at about the 3 hour mark.
Time ----- Temperature Water ----- Temperature Food
9:45 am ----- 67.4°F ----------- 36 °F
10:47 am ---- 168.5°F ---------- 126.2 °F
11:45 am ---- 170 °F ---------- 145.1 °F
12:50 pm ---- 170.8°F ---------- 164.9 °F
1st insert - I make an overnight breakfast at home and bring it to work hot - if I will not eat it right away or it did not stay hot on the ride into work, I will put it in the insert at work.
2nd insert - Fill with lunch and keep in refrigerator overnight. Bring to work cold and add to base once I am done with breakfast.
Pros:
* Gets food very hot, but nothing burns. Even heat, with no hot or cold spots.
* The rubber top collects condensed moisture and it drips back into the food, keeping it from drying out.
* When cold, the rubber top is very secure. It stays in place even when traveling - and I ride my bike to work! It is designed to pop off a bit when being heated on the base.
* Combo of two tops keeps smells inside.
* 2.5 cup capacity
* Insert and lid dishwasher safe.
Cons:
* No, timer or on/off switch. If it's plugged in, it's on. (Tip: I use an analog plug timer)
* Would be nice to be able to purchase additional inserts separately on Amazon. The manufacturer does sell them on their website, however.
* Once it starts to get hot, it's really hard, if not impossible to screw the outer lid back on securely. If you don't take it off, it stays in place just fine.
Some recipes and ideas:
Overnight Breakfasts (recommend using a plug in timer to have the unit turn on 3-5 hours or so before you get up):
* Single serving oatmeal: layer chopped fruit on bottom (fresh, canned or frozen), then oatmeal and seasonings, then liquid such as water, yogurt or milk.
o Example: ½ fresh chopped apple, ½ cup raw oats, 6 oz flavored yogurt. Do not stir - leave in layers as it cooks. Stir in walnuts when ready to eat.
* "Omelet" - spray insert with cooking spray, layer veggies on bottom, top with cheese. Mix eggs with seasoning and pour over. Top with any meat (precooked such as ham). Do not stir, leave in layers as it cooks.
o My favorite: frozen artichoke hearts and spinach, goat cheese, and egg whites.
"Hungry Girl" diet book tip: Hungry Girl recommends you add plain frozen veggies to a Lean Cuisine type frozen meal to bulk it up without extra calories. As she describes, the sauce from the meal mixes in and covers the veggies. This is PERFECT with this crock pot! The extra veggies fit in the insert and everything gets the same temperature.
o My favorites: Green beans on the bottom, frozen healthy choice lasagna on top. No sauce Asian stir-fry with Asian themed dinners, etc. You get the idea!
Lunch/Dinners
* Soup/stews/chilies
* Almost any frozen dinner, no hot/cold spots like when you microwave it!
* Lasagna or other pasta
* Anything with a sauce
* Pretty much anything except something fried, breaded or with a crust - pizza or fried chicken would probably be gross

Food is Hot.
There is No external heat coming off it
The internal flap does lift off a bit to vent steam when it is hot but outside the unit you would never know.
No smells escape.
I accidently for got it one day and left it on. I was so worried but it was fine. The food was a bit overheated but nothing untoward happened.
The stainless liner and lid I bring home, wash and take it to work the next day, place my soup or whatever inside, pop liner kid down, screw outer lid on and turn it on. At lunch, it is hot and ready, give it a stir and eat. Watch your tongue. It is HOT.
This vital detail should be present in the advertising of the item. It is not. I am now faced with the cost and inconvenience of a return.
Works great.
Cheap plastic threads on top lid stripped right away on one but not the other. Didn't interfere with use (we leave them at work).
