Customer Review: Squirrel Proof BUT...
Samer Saadoun
Product Description
The Perky-Pet Small Panorama Wild Bird Feeder is sure to attract many birds to your backyard, including cardinals, titmice, nuthatches and more. The innovative design of this feeder allows the seed to dispense into the tray and stops dispensing once the tray is full. Simply fill with sunflower seed, mixed seed, or any other kind of bird seed. Then, as the birds dine from the circular perch, the seed is replenished into the tray so it remains consistently full. This feeder also features the Sure-Lock cap system, an exclusive squirrel-resistant feature, which ensures the lid stays put and so squirrels have a difficult time gaining access to the seed. Use the built-in hanging cable to place this feeder anywhere around your yard. The Small Panorama holds 2 lb of seed and features a rustic brown finish to blend with your outdoor décor. Remember to clean your wild bird feeders every two weeks with a mild soap and water solution.

Attractive Antique FinishNot only is this feeder convenient and economical, but it's also eye-catching! The beautiful antique brown finish will make this a standout addition to any personal bird feeder collection or a thoughtful housewarming or holiday gift idea for the bird lover on your list. The metal is also powder-coated to ensure durability and rust resistance. |
Sue-Lock Cap Locks LidTo ensure that your offerings are reserved for the birds, this feeder features a Sure-Lock cap. This system secures the lid in place, while the metal lid, base, and perches offer additional protection. These features make it more difficult for squirrels to remove the lid and gain access to the abundance of food inside. |
2 lb Seed CapacityThis feeder offers a sizable 2 lb seed capacity so your hungry birds are always in good supply. In addition, the feeder’s built-in drain holes prevent water from pooling in the reservoir so seed stays fresh for longer. Not only will the birds love it, but it also means less seed waste for you! In addition, the large overhang shields the tray and birds as they dine. |

We have attracted a lot of different birds (I don't know the kinds of birds they all are, cardinals, chickadees, sparrows, jays, yellow ones, a blue one...ha ha! I TOLD you I didn't know!) This feeder does spill a little (either that or I have messy birds!), but there are enough birds (there is a field near us) that they usually eat up the spills. If you have yours over a patio or something, you may want to look for a different feeder, but we love our set up! We watch them every morning. And they adore this food so I usually have to fill the small feeder every day. I usually rinse the bath and fill it daily anyway, so it is no big deal to dump a cup full of food in. I buy this big bag of food and keep a large empty Wendy's cup in it to scoop it out and fill it. The bigger bags were much cheaper by pound than the smaller one, but I always compare, just in case.
It has a plastic-coated, twisted wire with a loop on top to hang it. Mine did come with little nick in the plastic coating (maybe from the lid during shipping, I don't know) and it made it hard to lift the lid at first. You press a little button, and the lid slides up the wire. When you let go of the button, the lid "grips" the wire, keeping it closed. After a few months, It doesn't get stuck on the nick anymore. I think the plastic "hangnail" type thing just came off. Luckily that part is under the lid, so the rain hasn't rusted the wire in that spot. It is just a plastic/vinyl coating though, so you may want to be careful with the loop if you are hanging from something rough (like a branch) that might rip the coating. I could have returned it, but it is pretty inconsequential, so I just used it.
Overall, even with the little defect mine had, I still love it. The ring around the bottom is very nice for them to land on and they can reach and peck from the tray really easily. We watch the little birds every morning out our kitchen window. My kids are moving to college soon and they said that they want one for their apartment there!
I read another review where they warned that the wire hanger allows for water to wick down into the feeder. I too live in Oregon where we gets lots of rain, so I wanted to see if I could do something to prevent the birdseed from getting wet. What I did was take a piece of masking tape and wrap it around the wire hanger at the top of the feeder tube. Then I took a small strip of fleece and wrapped that tightly around the wire above the masking tape and secured it with a few stitches to keep it tightly wrapped. I then took a few small pieces of packing tape and wrapped them around the bottom of my fabric. You can't see it when the top is attached. It was out in the rain for over a week and when I went to refill it, the fabric was not wet and I didn't have any clumps or sprouts in my birdseed.
I did not have any issues with the packing or with anything being damaged. I feel this is a good feeder for the price and I'm happy with my purchase.
