Product Description
Dyson DC39 Animal Canister Vacuum DC39 Animal is a full-size Dyson canister vacuum with Ball technology for greater maneuverability. Wheeled vacuums can be awkward – heavy to pull, head the wrong way and collide with obstacles. A Dyson Ball vacuum cleans without the awkward moves, turning on the spot. DC39 Animal also has a central steering mechanism for greater control. The pivot point is located near the center of the machine, so it can make tighter turning circles and more easily follows the user’s path.
Dyson cyclones capture more dirt than any other. DC39 Animal has Radial Root Cyclone technology with remodelled airways to maximize suction power. Like all other Dyson vacuums, DC39 Animal doesn’t lose suction as you clean. There are no bags or filters to replace, so there are no extra costs. DC39 Animal has been engineered for reduced noise levels with no compromise in performance. The essential components are located inside the acoustically treated ball.
DC39 Animal has a Triggerhead tool, with an air-driven rotating brush bar. It’s the only turbine head controlled at the handle – so no bending down is required. Just push the button on the handle to turn the brush bar on for carpets or off for hard floors and delicate rugs. DC39 Animal also comes with a mini turbine head for cleaning pet hair and dirt from confined places, upholstery, stairs and the car.
Patented Dyson Technology
Dyson engineers are constantly testing and inventing, trying to find new ways to make their technology work better. As they work, they file patent applications to protect their inventions from copycat manufacturers. That’s why the only place you’ll find Dyson technology is inside a Dyson machine.Dyson Root Cyclone Technology Hygienic Bin Emptying System DC39 Animal turns on a dime New Radial Root Cyclone Technology
Ordinary vacuum cleaners rely on bags to trap dust and dirt. As you use them, the tiny holes in the bag clog up with particles of dust. This restricts the flow of air, so the vacuum cleaner loses suction.
Dyson vacuum cleaners don’t rely on bags to trap dust and dirt. They use cyclone technology, which spins the air at incredibly high speeds. Inside the Dyson Ball The cyclones inside a Dyson vacuum cleaner generate centrifugal forces many thousands of times the force of gravity. Dust, dirt and pet hair are flung out of the airflow and straight into the bin. No bag. No loss of suction.
Dyson has been continually refining cyclone vacuum technology since inventing it more than 20 years ago. DC39 Animal has new Radial Root Cyclone technology. Reconfigured air channels and improved flow efficiency reduce turbulence and preserve air pressure, so that the inner cyclones can extract more microscopic particles. These refinements help remove more dirt, dust, allergens and pet hair from the airflow.
Ball Technology
Dyson Ball vacuum cleaners use Ball technology to overcome the steering limitations of fixed wheels. They ride on a ball, which turns on the spot so you can steer with ease. The ball also holds the heaviest component (the motor) – positioned towards the base for a lower center of gravity and greater stability. The machine moves easily around obstacles, and the ball’s smooth surface means that it doesn’t dig into the carpet pile.
Reduced Noise Levels – Ball Engineering
No compromise in performance. Essential components are located inside the acoustically treated ball.
DC39 Animal Features:
Triggerhead Tool The only turbine head controlled at the handle so no bending down is required. A fingertip control switches the brush bar off for delicate rugs and hard floors, and switches it on for high pick-up on carpets.A Central Steering Mechanism The only canister vacuum with a central steering mechanism for greater control. The cyclone pack articulates with the chassis, so it’s easy to control when moving around obstacles.
Extra Tools DC39 Animal comes with a Mini turbine head for cleaning pet hair and dirt from confined spaces, upholstery, stairs and the car. There’s also a Stair tool, and a Combination tool that converts to a brush tool for dusting.
Clear Bin Lets You See When it Needs Emptying The bin on a Dyson vacuum cleaner is transparent so you can see when it needs emptying – and just how much dust, dirt and pet hair your Dyson machine has picked up.
Captures Allergens, Expels Cleaner Air Dyson cyclones capture microscopic particles down to 0.5 microns in size. DC39 Animal also includes a non-removable HEPA filter as an extra safeguard for allergy sufferers. It traps microscopic particles down to 1/5,000 of a pinhead, including pollen, mold and bacteria.
No Extra Costs Other vacuum cleaners are still designed to need replacement bags and filters – and the cost soon adds up. Dyson vacuum cleaners don’t need replacement bags or belts, so there are no extra costs to worry about.
5 Year Parts and Labor Warranty Your Dyson vacuum cleaner is likely to take a few knocks and bashes during everyday use – but that’s nothing compared to what Dyson puts its machines through during testing and development. All Dyson vacuum cleaners undergo a lengthy and rigorous testing program. That’s why DC39 Animal comes with a 5 year warranty, parts and labor guaranteed by Dyson.

Our older upright Dyson DC15 is awkward for hard surfaces - the upright is hard to squeeze under furniture and the rotating head, even when turned off, seems to be harsh for the floor. A canister seemed the better choice after we removed the carpet on one of our floors. We also looked in the store at the smaller canister Dyson makes, but it seems very small in terms of capacity. The canister does seem to hold a bit less than the upright, but not by much.
The DC39 unit is well packed and easy to put together (connect main unit + hose + tube + attachment). Getting the main cyclone canister off the unit to remove the packing material (or to empty it) is a lot harder than it is in the upright model. The DC39's canister snaps in below the handle, and you have to press a ring down while lifting the handle. Two hands and not straightforward the first time you do it.
The vacuum comes with a flex hose and a telescoping hard tube, all plastic. The combination works well and can reach far under furniture, something the upright cannot do because it's too bulky to fit.
The DC39 comes in the box with 4 attachments - a main roller brush, a smaller twin rotor turbine brush, a stair tool and a crevasse tool. The articulated hard floor tool is a separate purchase (again, why?).
The main roller is ok, but pales in comparison to the power brush of the Dyson upright. In other words, I wouldn't do a lot of carpet with the DC39 because the head doesn't do very well on material that tends to be sucked in the vacuum (example, bathroom rug) or anything with very long pile. That jams the roller immediately. The only way to get it going again is to lift it up while letting go of the suction (there's a button on the handle for that). The attachment works well on regular carpet, but the power brush of the DC15 does a lot better on the same carpet when compared side by side - night and day in fact. The other thing about the attachment is that it's the only one that includes a way to attach to the main unit for storage. The other attachments don't have that. So, if you intend to store the vacuum with the hose attached to the unit, you must put the main brush back on.
The smaller turbine with the twin horizontal heads however is however an amazing brush. It made minced meat of a large pillow full of cat hair and it's also excellent on stairs. The small turbine didn't jam once although it makes a ruckus. That adapter works a lot better than the main brush.
The flute/crevasse tool comes with a brush that slides along the tool. It can be retracted entirely, and it has very long, softer bristles. I used it to clean a ceiling fan, return air vents and picture frames. It worked very well and was very gentle.
The stair tool is a small plastic tool, it works well because it packs suction in such a small area, but that's just it, it's very small. It could work as a hard floor attachment but it's just too narrow.
Lastly, the (additional purchase) articulated hard floor adapter is very good is both wide and thin, so it fits just about anywhere while it covers a wide swath. A slight twist of the hose makes it turn, so for example, vacuuming under a chair is very easy by twisting left and right without the legs getting in the way. The tool made easy work of dust and small debris. It also works with the host completely flat or full up, so the tool works in just about any hose position.
One thing that is apparent is that the DC39 is not a shop-vac. It has trouble eating things like dead leaves that fell off a plant but the success rate varies greatly with the adapter used. The twin turbine will eat just about anything, the regular brush tends to choke on anything easily. The main difference with the upright is the power brush, as the DC15 just chews right through just about anything that doesn't fit until it does using brute force, something the DC39 cannot do although that little twin adapter is pretty close in chewing power. Then again, the DC39 is kind to hard floors with the attachment by design, so I suppose you can't have gentle and shop-vac qualities in a single design. I would not use any rotating brush against anything but upholstery or carpet anyway.
The power cable slides back into the ball and thus far seems to untangle the cord as it retracts. That is a nice feature I wish uprights had. There is a switch on the ball to do that. The other switch is the power switch. Both switches are designed to be foot activated. The two other switches just open various air vents on the hard tube - one controls the main brush rotation (doesn't work with the twin turbine), the other allows you to drop the brick you sucked up earlier.
So, all in all, I find this DC39 to be an excellent vacuum so long as you use the right attachment and don't do a lot of heavy carpet work for which a vacuum with a power brush is probably a lot better. I don't expect the DC39 to pickup bricks but it has enough suction to probably hold one, as with all Dysons - that is never the issue.
I find it a snap to use and clean, and it does navigate corners and other obstacles well thanks to two front steering wheels and a pair of very large wheels on each side of the ball. Then again, while the vacuum itself may be very adroit, I always end up with a tangled wire mess of the power cable anyway so there is never a good solution. It does follow the hose around very easily, but trips up on the power cord easily as well if you double back.
I think that at the price point, Dyson should include the hard floor attachment.
I have only had this vacuum 4 days but I love it. It's so easy to vacuum the rugs. It's so light!
I don't have a rainbow distributor near me and the whole filling the vacuum with water kind of put me off.
The Shark pro is an upright but you can remove the canister and walk around with it. There is an attachment head to do stairs but you will be down on your hands and knees on the landing. The damp mop feature looked pretty neat. I went down to my local Sam's Club and picked it up. It was heavy. Heavy enough that I don't want to carry it up and down the stairs. Plus I don't want to change out the attachment head to do the stairs. In most of the videos I have seen comparing the Dyson upright and the Shark upright, the Shark won but just barely.
I don't want an upright vacuum. It's heavy and I have stairs. I don't want to lug a canister up the stairs by hand and get on my hands and knees to vacuum the rug. Plus I have to stop vacuuming to change out the vacuum head.
I have read the other reviews on this Dyson vacuum and the problems people have had with them. My thought is maybe they didn't read the instructions because I have had no problems. The vacuum handle extends. My husband if 5ft 10in. and he can use the vacuum comfortably. The on off switch for the brush works very well just hold it all the way down for a couple of seconds to allow the airflow switch to redirect the air. Because the brush is air driven it will not work on high thick shag carpet. I don't have a problem because I don't have those carpets in my house except for one small area carpet in one bathroom. No worries, it's older and I am remodeling anyway so I will replace it. The power cord retracts very quickly even if it is past the red line. Get out of the way or you can get slapped with it. The suction of this vacuum is excellent. I have a Sears 3.0 horsepower wet/dry vacuum in my shop and the suction rivals it. This vacuum is like having a shop vacuum with a rotating brush.
The one thing I don't like about this vacuum is the canister is very small. I empty it after vacuuming every room. I really don't mind. I can vacuum my entire home in less than 45 minutes.
Pros: Very light weight vacuum.
Fantastic Suction
I don't have to get on my hands and knees to do the stairs.
Good for short carpets and bare floors.
Very small footprint for a canister vacuum so it's easy to store.
Cons: Small canister
Not good for long shag carpet. The brush will not rotate.
Twice the price of a Shark.
Despite the cost, I am keeping this vacuum because of the convenience. I sure hope it lasts. It has a 5 year warranty.
