Product Description
The Trapper T-Rex Rat Trap is a state-of-the-art mechanical trap that offers superior rat capture. Patented interlocking teeth make rat escape virtually impossible. With T-Rex you'll get the perfect combination of trigger sensitivity and trap velocity – speed and responsiveness that ensure a successful and deadly capture. Easy to set and safer to use than traditional snap traps, the T-Rex can be placed directly in a Protecta Rat Bait Station, or tied to pipes or beams that rats may use as highways.

Enter these traps. I caught the most clever, confident and downright rude rat within 5 hours of placing the trap. This guy knew he had the run of the house after I went to bed, went anywhere he wanted with impunity. I named him Rat Bastard, lol. The following night I caught another elusive rat.
As others did, I chose to use peanut butter. But if you have a favorite - use that. I also made a point beforehand to eliminate sources of food they could get hold of.
A word about scent. I did follow others' advice on not handling the traps directly. But I think it depends on the circumstances. The rats in this house were used to my scent and felt free to gnaw on or drag off things that already had my scent on them. So I don't think it matters with rats already familiar with a human scent in a house - but I saw no downside in following this, and for an outside rat problem, I imagine it matters.
These 2 oh-so-clever rats were perfectly killed by these traps. The jaws had them by the neck, and as advertised, I simply picked up the trap, opened the jaws, and then dropped the rat into a trash bag.
I consider these traps much safer than the wooden ones. But you don't want to be careless with them. Because if one is set and then comes down on your finger, you and your neighbors several blocks away are going to know about it.
The little cup that holds whatever food bait you're going to use twists and snaps into place. I can see how not paying attention could lose the cup. It's small. As others have mentioned, you access the cup from underneath. I appreciated the fact that the cup sits below the trap mechanism: they have to step on it to reach the food bait. I consider these well worth the money. They are sturdy and reusable. The glue traps are a single use item. Even so, mixing up the way you eliminate the rats I think is useful and more effective than a single method.
One word of warning: be sure you put them where your pets can't reach them. These will almost certainly break a leg or seriously injure a nose if they're investigating.
These traps could really use a set of instructions. They are extremely simple, but there ought to be some warnings (such as monitoring pets around them). This is the only ding I can come up with.
Other than that - highly recommended.

I'm so glad I made the investment. I definitely recommend these!!
After setting the traps out I was incredibly disappointed after a week of checking the video to see that none of the traps in view had been tripped, let alone a catch.
After reading all these reviews I was dismayed about that and decided to rebait them. I was angry to find all but two of the traps had been raided without being triggered. I baited 6 with peanut butter, one with pulled pork, one maple syrup and two with milk chocolate chunks that I rammed into the cup under force. One of the chocolate did in fact catch a small mouse. The other had tooth scrapes on it but the rodent gave up on it without putting enough effort into it to trigger it.
Although well designed and built, the bait cups on these are much too far forward. The pest is able to lean over and lick out soft baits like peanut butter without needing to contact the trigger plate.
Therefore, what I'm going to do is forego the bait cups altogether. I'm going to reach up through the bottom with my pinky finger and smear a dab of peanut butter as far to the rear as I can under the trigger plate.
That way any mouse or rat will have to put it's head through the bait cup hole on the trigger plate to be able to reach it with it's tongue. I think it's inevitable that the trigger will release if a pest tries to reach it under the trigger plate.
If anyone else tries this, please comment with your results. I'll try to update with my success level. Thanks.
Update 11/23 Removing the bait cup and baiting behind it did give more success but my baits still got stolen without a trigger sometimes. Therefore, I now bait them behind the bait cup as before but I now reinsert the empty bait cup. The rodent then has to try get it's tongue in the gap between the cup and the trigger plate. Or it can try getting it from under the side of the trigger plate. Both are hard to do without releasing the trigger. I haven't had traps out for 6 months but just put them out after finding damage this week. after out for 3 days I've bagged 3 mice in last 36 hours. Some traps have gone untouched, but when they do make an attempt at the bait it seems they trigger it 100% of the time now.
