The doctors I did wind up seeing eventually when I wound up hospitalized for shortness of breath and needing multiple blood transfusions did not recommend that I take iron supplements because they assumed that I could not absorb iron and that I would just need to go to the hospital once my iron was low enough again and I felt terrible again and get very expensive iron infusions periodically.
But I thought why not at least try supplements. If I can't absorb them then I'm not out anything except some money.
Well, they work fine. Just like calories, my body absorbs iron just fine. These aren't special, expensive, "bariatric" chewable tablets, these are identical to the ones that my pharmacy puts in a prescription bottle, the mgs, color, shape, and type of iron, all identical. Some websites for bariatric patients might recommend something else but these are what gets prescribed if your doctor bothers to try to prescribe anything. (I did get a two week prescription from the hospital when I was discharged, they left it up to my other doctors to decide if I should stay on it. The hematologist and my gp both decided against continuing the prescription, because they thought it was pointless, and both were wrong.) Now that the hematologist has seen my stored iron steadily and gradually improve on the supplement I have been told to continue.
These do make some people feel gross I guess, the infusions do that to some people, too. My stomach doesn't feel anything anymore (including feeling full) so I have no problems. You might. Hopefully you have not let the butchers do bariatric surgery on you. Count calories, eat the way you're supposed to. Calories in, calories out, you can't get away from that by attempting surgical malnutrition.
P.S. before you let them diagnose you with borderline thyroid problems make sure none of your supplements have high dose biotin in them. It throws off your blood work and you might wind up over treated, which feels terrible.
Feosol Ferrous Sulfate Iron Supplement:
Original- High Potency Iron.
#1 Pharmacist Recommended Brand
Qty: 120 tablets
Serving Size: 1 tablet. 360% Daily Value of Iron. Approx. 4 months supply if taken as directed.
I have rated this product 4 out of 5 stars based on the following criteria:
Cost: At $9.89 for 120 ct bottle, this product is slightly more expensive than its competitors.
Taste: No noticeable taste.
Effects: Product works as advertised. Provides recommended amount of iron for those that need supplementation advised by their doctor. Product works just as well as the other brands I have tried.
Tablet Size: Averagely sized tablet, although it has an odd triangular shape. No difficulty swallowing despite this.
Digestibility: Easy to digest. No gastrointestinal upset while taking the product. The product was taken with breakfast but doesn’t seem to cause any issues if taken on empty stomach. The product does contain lactose and sorbitol- see ingredient category.
Ingredients: Product contains more added ingredients than some of its competitors. Namely lactose and sorbitol. Those with sugar-alcohol or lactose sensitivities might want to choose another option.
Shelf Life: Decent shelf-life. The bottle I purchased had approximately a two-year shelf life from when I received it. Plenty of time to fully use product prior to expiration date.
Conclusion:
I deducted half a point for cost and another half point for the inclusion of lactose and sorbitol in the ingredients. Normally I would not have done so, but due to the competitors not containing either one, I felt it was a strike against it. If Iron supplementation is advised by one’s doctor, I would recommend this product as long as you do not suffer from any of the aforementioned sensitivities.
