Summer Cooling for Outdoor Living
Backyard barbecues, outdoor pool parties, relaxing on the porch, garden, or deck—an outdoor evaporative air cooler beats the summer's heat and keeps the good times rolling. Fanning out a powerful, fresh cool breeze, weather-resistant outdoor swamp coolers extend summer's comfort outdoors.
Honeywell Evaporative Air Cooler with Fan & Humidifier for Outdoor Spaces, CO60PM
An outdoor evaporative cooler, this powerful, weatherproof model is built to cool larger outdoor and indoor spaces. Backyard decks, outdoor patios, large common areas, workshops—the unit's triple-sided honeycomb and extra-wide fan blades deliver a robust airflow. Equipped with an ice compartment, jumbo water tank, and a continuous water supply option, the CO60PM is a serious contender for extended summer comfort. New to evaporative air cooling? The sensation is like a lakeside breeze. Browse through these tabs to discover more about this energy-efficient technology.
So, It's Not an Air Conditioner—Right?
Correct! Evaporative air coolers don't use heavy compressors or refrigerant gas to lower air temperatures, nor do they spray mist. Instead, they moderately reduce heat through evaporating water vapor into the air. They work most effectively in hot, dry climates. Check out the map: The red and orange regions, with less than 45% relative humidity, are suited for indoor & outdoor evaporative coolers; the yellow regions, between 45%-65% relative humidity, can benefit from outdoor evaporative coolers; the blue, more humid zones are on target for outdoor evaporative cooling or indoor Honeywell Portable Air Conditioners. The cooling effect produced by evaporative air coolers depends on environment conditions and should not be expected to cool as efficiently as air conditioners.
How do Evaporative Air Coolers Work?
Honeywell evaporative air coolers are constructed with three central components: a fan, a pump system to circulate water and a honeycomb-shaped absorbent panel. The fan draws in warm air through the wet honeycomb media; evaporation converts the moisture into water vapor; and then cooler, more humid air flows out on the other side. When using an evaporative air cooler, ventilate, ventilate, ventilate! Open a window, or keep a door ajar, to expel over-humidity and allow for circulation of fresh, dry air. Also, be aware that the honeycomb media may have a distinct odor when first used, which will dissipate after a couple hours.

Product Description
The Honeywell 1540 CFM indoor/outdoor evaporative air cooler offers an energy efficient cooling option when the air is hot with low humidity, such as desert areas like the southwestern United States (recommended humidity level is 60% or less for maximum efficiency). Honeywell evaporative air coolers do not require power hungry components like compressors. The low power consumption (only 220 watts) translates into significant savings on energy bills compared to using air conditioners. Just unpack, add water/ice, plug it in, and use. For outdoor use it is weather resistant, UV protected and has an air-throw up to 12 yards. For indoor use, place near an open door or window in an area up to 850 square feet with adequate cross ventilation. For those living in more humid climates, consider portable air conditioning units or window air conditioners for indoor use.

Despite what other reviews say about these not working, they do work. They just aren't as cool as actual a/c- because it's not one.
PROS:
1. The fan on low is very powerful already. It is enough to cool most of my house. It cools about 1000 sqf. I don't use the higher settings as the wind is just too strong for indoors.
2. When used outdoors, it cools my 600 sqf covered patio on low setting.
3. When the temp outside goes over 90, it blows a constant 78 degrees.
4. When it reaches 100, it blows a cool 80 degrees as measured from a thermometer by the output.
5. Filling with water is done from the top of the unit. When it hits 90 and up, I add ice to the water I pour in.
6. I have window fans blowing out the humid air so I get the cooling without adding humidity. I also open windows. The heat doesn't come into the Windows because the air getting blown into the house by the cooler gets blown outwards from any open window or door. Just make sure the open window is not facing the side of the house where wind blows to your house.
7. When we cook at noon, we open the door to the garage. My garage has a whirly bird turbine on the roof which sucks the air out of the garage. It sucks the heat and humidity from the kitchen into the garage and out the roof turbine. As a result in 110 degree weather, I didn't need to use my AC.
8. It is built like a tank. It reminds me of Coleman giant cooler. Rugged and strong.
9. Meant to be left outside. It has UV protection so you can use it outdoors.
10. I open my patio sliding door and put it in front just as you see in the picture. That way I get direct air from outside and not sucking air from inside the house and increasing humidity.
11. In the evening when it is cooler outside, I switch off the Cool function and I set the fan on high to blow cold air into the house.
CONS:
1. Cleaning requires that you remove screws on the back and both sides to remove all the cooling cells. I wish that it was just press button or latch.
SUMMARY:
I cannot say enough nice things about this. I use it even when the Relative humidity is 70%. Humidity does rise so you have to vent it out just like I did. It is built finer than my Portacool. I highly recommend it.

SUMMARY:
I cannot say enough nice things about this. I use it even when the Relative humidity is 70%. Humidity does rise so you have to vent it out just like I did. It is built finer than my Portacool. I highly recommend it.
I've been using this air cooler in my 900 sq. ft. desert garage [which is about 100 sq. ft. more than should probably be cooled with this unit] for a couple of months now. If I open the double garage door only about 3 inches and place the cooler on the right side of the garage "up-wind" from the doors, it works very well in the 100+ degree temperatures of the desert, keeping the garage temperature under 84 degrees. When the desert temperature is between 85 and 100 degrees, the cooler has been able to keep the temperature at around 74 degrees even in the 900 sq. ft. space. If I used cooler water, I'm certain the temperature could be brought down further. I'm pleased with the garage temperature this unit has been maintaining since it keeps my car a comfortable temperature, as well as keeping the whole house water filtration system located in the garage below the 90 degree maximum temperature it needs to function well. A side benefit is that I can now comfortably work out in the garage, especially if I direct the air output directly toward my workout area.
A downside is that it has not been simple to get the water flow from an external source regulated to provide exactly the amount of water the unit needs, which means it must be carefully monitored since there is a warning on the unit that running the cooler without water could destroy it. This makes it hard to leave home for more than a couple of hours if the unit is left on because either the unit could run out of water, or it can overflow into the area to be cooled. Also, there are tiny screws in the unit that go directly into plastic and, on my unit at least, water leaks around screws found just at the maximum water line, causing a small puddle. That isn't an issue in my garage but I wouldn't want that to occur inside my home should I want to use it inside. I'm going to try using very small rubber washers with those screws but have been hesitant to remove the screws since the plastic could "strip" and cause more of a water issue than just the current small puddle.
Overall, the unit is very simple to set up and use, especially if you simply pour water in at the top of the unit rather than connecting it to a water line. Essentially, it is just a big fan with water evaporation to cool the air flow. Using very cold water is helpful for cooler air, of course. Some reviewers mention using ice but the water input area is very small so it would take crushed ice for that purpose and I think would be cumbersome. When I have a need to use an ice chest for some reason, I like using the melted ice water in this air cooler.
Remember that this air cooler is not made for humid areas. Even in the arid desert, on a rainy day with higher humidity it does not work nearly as well. For homes with very low humidity and a way to comfortably leave a nearby window open to avoid excessive humidity build-up, I think it is wonderful. Personally, I don't want the desert dust in my home so would not use it inside. Unlimited warm, dry air is necessary for it to function as a cooler and using it inside without a window open that provides that warm, dry air would be fine until the air is cooled and becomes humid from the swamp cooler; at that point, it would no longer have warm/dry air to work with and so would simply be functioning as a fan and humidifier.
