1. The adjustable length of the pole. The other one is fixed at 9 feet. There are a couple of reasons adjustability is a very nice feature. First, what others have pointed out - use the shorter length to cut up the limbs you've cut down. It's much easier than standing back nine feet to do it. But, an equally important reason is that it can be adjusted easily while using the saw. I use it mainly for palm trees and oaks. When I'm on the ladder, I don't always need or want the saw at its full length. There's about ten pounds hanging on a 9 foot pole and it gets heavy quickly. And, sometimes I'm closer to what I want to cut. Twist the lock on the pole, collapse it a little, tighten the lock and start cutting again. It's very nice.
2. A major reason I decided to change saws was that the one I have infuriated me with the chain constantly jumping the track. I tightened it and loosened it and tried everything I could to get the tension right. It didn't matter - if the saw twisted a little while cutting the chain popped off. That meant removing the cover, adjusting the chain, replacing the cover and going back to work - five to ten minutes of cursing the whole time. I just finished trimmng several palm trees and an oak with this one and it did not jump once. Tensioning the chain is very simple and done with the cover on - just turn a screw.
3. The oiler on the other one seems to feed oil too fast - the motor always is oily and it runs down the pole. This one doesn't and keeps a light coat of oil on the chain. The other one put too much oil on the chain with the result it jams because the saw dust gets oily and clogs the sprocket - that may be why it jumped the track.
4. It cuts faster - that may be simply because it's a new chain so I can't say it's different in that respect from the other.
5. It feels sturdier. The pole definitely is stronger. There is absolutely no twisting or bending. The other one doesn't really "bend" but it does flex. This one is very stiff.
So - I'm glad I have it and recommend it hightly.
The only con I can think of so far is that it is a bit top-heavy. I am 5'8" and not exactly a weak woman, but I can see that this saw may start to feel a bit unwieldy depending on length and angle of usage. However, I think that would probably be the case of just about any pole saw. The only reason why I took one star off is because the chain that comes with this saw is not very good. It didn't last very long, and I found that I had to order a replacement chain fairly quickly (I ordered the Oregon brand 8" chain). If you buy this saw, I would suggest also ordering the replacement chain at the same time just to have it on hand.
Update (5/3/14):
I have now used this saw at the full extension to trim some top branches of my persimmon tree, and have confirmed that it is a little unwieldy. It took me a few minutes to find the right balance so I wouldn't chop off more than I wanted. I still say this is a good saw for the price, but be aware that if you are petite and/or not very strong, this is not something you can easily use when extended.
Also be aware that if you plan on cutting a lot of wood or using it on thick branches, you will go through a lot of chains! I'm already on my 4th chain and ended up buying a cheap chain grinder from Harbor Freight to see if I can get a little more use out of them. If you plan on doing a lot of chopping - especially if most of your chopping can be done at ground level - you may want to consider getting a regular chainsaw with a longer chain.
Top reviews from other countries
- Came almost completely pre-assembled except for attaching the chain head. Some reviewers commented that the instructions were unclear and could lead to a person attaching the chain "backwards." The instructions, which may have been revised given that feedback, is very informative and I found I could easily install the chain correctly.
- I recommend lightly filling the oil as the tank holds only 60 mL. Beware of overflowing it.
During use:
- The largest branch I cut was 9 cm in diameter; the saw is rated for almost double that, but I think that's stretch advertising. You'd have to be quite skilled to use the saw comfortably for large-diameter branches or trunks. That's beyond my beginner ability.
- Kick back is low. Be careful of the saw getting stuck halfway if you're cutting 7 cm diameter or greater. Keep the trigger switch pressed until you're in the clear.
After use/storage:
- Empty the oil tank if you're planning to store it for greater than a couple of weeks. The oil leaks even if you leave it upright (oil tank opening facing upwards).
The main pro is that the weight is manageable even at full extension. A con is that the saw teeth catches very easily to small branches, leaves, etc, so I found that I had to trim my hedge with a hedge trimmer a good deal in order to reveal the actual branches I wanted to saw off. Also, I kept peeling off the bark in a bad way during my cuts though I'm not sure if that's the saw or my poor skill.
We use this saw about 2-3 times a year, I find it does a great job, it has cut through some thick branches that we had. I kind of wish it could extend more, but I know that's impossible to do, because it is quite heavy. After use, my husband tells me his arms are sore. I do recommend this for someone who has strong arms.
