Amazing warmth for a budget sleeping bag

Amazing warmth for a budget sleeping bag
This bag is a real sleeper, pardon the awful pun. Wow, that really was bad. Anyway, the 40 degree rating on this one is justified. With an additional blanket over you and a good mat underneath, you could maybe push that further. Wenzel company products are like coming home, I had those as a teenager. The insulation back then was pretty funky; it was like a simple cotton/polyester fiber. It worked. The stuff in this Lakeside bag is the modern version, no question about it. It has a billow effect similar to down, in the way it fluffs up in the sewn chambers. I'm not equating it to down, I just mean this is ingenious the way they did it. If you're hitting Yosemite, for heaven's sake bring your down bag. But I've got to tell you, this one here will surprise you. Oh, one other thing: light duty nylon (I was expecting that, but it's ripstop) and non YKK zipper system. It bites the seams a little when zipping too fast, so watch it. They put the emphasis and cost into the insulation.** I came back to see if my photo had been posted. I think that she should be hired as the quality control tester for Wenzel products. But enough about her future career: I just noticed that one person said that it was a bummer that there is no bag/stuff sack with this one. But there is. It's like a heavy clear plastic with a green zipper at one end and it's a good one. I wonder if they would send the other buyer one. Probably.

After reading many sleeping bag reviews, I chose this bag for several reasons.

I have down mummy bags for backpacking, but I wanted car camping sleeping bags. Features that I wanted: two rectangular bags that would zip together; polyester lining for easier movement in the bag; 40 degree rating; affordable.

These bags zip together. There's a bit of a gap where the zippers meet at the bottom, but I didn't notice any draft. The zippers have a tendency to snag if you zip too quickly, so keep that in mind.

The lining is the same material as the outside of the bag. If you want a fuzzy, fleece lining, this isn't for you. I wanted the poly lining because it's easier to turn over with the poly lining, especially when sharing a double bag.

We used the bags zipped together for three nights in a row when the temperature got as low as 37 degrees (middle TN in mid-Oct). We stayed warm. Now, we wore sweats and wool socks, I even wore a hat, but we were plenty warm. We were on an air mattress and had a thick blanket between the bag and the mattress. I was a little worried when the frost advisory was posted but we were warm. We had a couple extra blankets just in case but didn't need them. No heater in the tent, no hand warmers either. I figured we were really pushing the bag rating, but they came through. I probably wouldn't want to go much lower.

As for size, very roomy for two adults. I'm 5'9" and the bag was long enough for me to burrow down in and cover my head (37 degrees is pretty cold!)

The bags came with carry bags that work well. They aren't compression bags but size isn't a concern. The bags are a little tricky to roll up. Just start by holding the bag tight as you roll. It's easier if you have someone to help put the carry bag on while you hold the bag.

I'm really impressed with this sleeping bag. I had my doubts because the price seemed very low. But the quality seems good. They look to be well made. Warm and comfortable. If I had to buy more sleeping bags, I'd choose this one in minute. This bag exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend it.

If anything changes, I'll update my review.

Update 11/5/13. Another cold weather camping trip. The temp got down to below freezing, there was frost on our tent. The bags were pushed beyond the limit but we had an extra fleece blanket in the bag with us. I would not hesitate to use them again in weather a few degrees plus or minus 40 degrees. The zippers were a little hard to work, but it could be because my fingers were cold. I'm still happy with the bags. Our friends had mummy bags and shivered all night long. We were comfortable once we added the extra blanket.

I was totally blown away by this sleeping bag. I spent the night camping in Northern Maine in the summer and this bag was wonderful. It was nice and soft inside, the zipper never gave me one seconds trouble. It worked perfectly every time I used it. It comes in a clear plastic zippered case which I tossed for my Lewis and Clark stuff bag (11x24) and that worked perfect too. This bag was nice and warm. Warmer than I expected by the rating of 40 degrees. It really was a great purchase. I was totally surprised. I bought it after reading the reviews and comparing products and I am very happy with this bag. I had plenty of inside room, it was nice and cozy and warm inside, I am only 5'8" but easily fit inside with plenty of space to roll around. This really is a good sleeping bag for the money. I am very pleased with this purchase.

EDITED REVIEW: Revised down a star from 4 to 3...The original review below is still accurate. However, the through-stitching is coming loose in more than one spot with less than two weeks of nightly use indoors and zero trips through the wash. I would still recommend the bag for the price, but please do not look for it to hold up to more than light use for a couple of seasons.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: As another reviewer stated, this bag is stitched-through, not offset quilted. However, the picture of the bag gives a clear indication of this, regardless of the written description.

The bag is very lightweight, yet still warm. I was skeptical of the polyester lining being chilly feeling, but once you are in the bag, your body heat transfers to the lining, is trapped by the fill, and the bag is kept quite comfortable. I have been using this on the floor of my living room at about 65 degrees and find myself too warm at times (in t-shirt and light pj bottoms). The temperature rating is likely accurate, though you will certainly wearing sweats or long johns using this bag at 40 degrees.

The zipper is free and easy, but you will have to watch you don't catch the flap that covers the zipper on the inside of the bag as there is no guard. This has not been much of an issue so far. There is a wide Velcro flap that closes over the zipper at the very top on the outside of the bag, but I do not use it and cannot comment on how well it would do at keeping the bag fully zipped if that were your wish.

I am 5'3" and there is plenty of room to get down into the bag and have your full size pillow in the bag with you. Obviously, the taller you are, the less room. I would say that the item description of fitting a person up to 5'11'' is quite accurate.

This bag did come with a carry/storage bag, and I had no trouble at all getting the sleeper rolled back up and put in it's carrying bag. There are narrow cords on the carry/storage bag that not only cinch the bag closed, but also double as straps for a shoulder sling or pack-type carry.

Lastly, the price point can be beat.

Not very durable. I bought this for my son who has extreme allergies. While it is good for his allergies, the zipper broke the first week he had it, before he even camped with it. I sewed it shut, so he can no longer unzip it all the way open.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Schlafsack - genau was ich wollte
Reviewed in Germany on September 9, 2019

5.0 out of 5 stars a nice sleeping bag
Reviewed in Canada on March 26, 2014
this is a pretty nice sleeping bag, came with a plastic cover, then i can tie my sleeping bag with the rubber band and zip it with the plastic cover with no struggling. since i have to tie my sleeping bag out there on my backpack, the plastic cover also prevent my sleeping bag getting wet if there is rain!
it is light~~ easy to carry around.
the sleeping bag is long enough, (well. since i am small..) it covers my whole body and it is warm enough. i don't think you need an extra blanket if you are going to camp in somewhere warm.
it really feel comfortable! i love this sleeping bag!
