    My GO TO printer
    5 Stars
    My GO TO printer
I do lots of photo printing along with just copies of papers. I have tried many printers over the years and THIS one is the best. In fact it's so good I have one for me and my wife. The BIG thing I love about this printer is the individual ink cartridges. The colors that are used most - just replace those inks. The touch screen is great for viewing what is to be printed. When enlarging pictures I can adjust the size pot the enlargement by viewing it before it prints. We BOTH love this printer and it's great for air drop from anywhere in the house from our phone or iPad. I fully recommend this printer when you want a great product that does most of the things you need - printing, scanning, enlarging, color pictures of different sizes up to 8x10, and enlarging.

Top reviews from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2013
That said, I don't try different brands so I can compare them, so I may be biased. My camera equipment is Canon (for many years) and so my last printer was a Canon IP6000, purchased in 2006, for printing 4x6 photos (and documents). It worked great until recently when it suddenly slowed way down, which is what prompted me to go shopping. Naturally I read the reviews for Canon printers (and some other brands) and it appeared that this one was the newest technology and already had favorable reviews, including from people with home businesses.

Now, let's switch gears. My printing needs have diminished over the years as I have become increasingly more digital in document storage, online financial transactions, etc. Basically, if I can do it digitally, then that is the route I take. This includes my photo collection which is stored on my iPad for showing off. :-) I also bought a CanoScan 8600F (flatbed scanner) in 2006, which is still in use.

So, imagine my very pleasant surprise when I discovered the awesome speed and stream-lined functionality of the multi-sheet scanning feature! If one sets up a directory (in the accompanying software utilities) ahead of time, then it's as simple as loading your documents, hitting either start button (black or color) and very quickly a pdf file shows up in the pre-set directory. Did I mention it has an ethernet port and is quickly (and painlessly) recognized on the network once the drivers are installed? I don't like Wi-Fi for home networking, I prefer ethernet (gigabit speed) when ever I can get it, so this port was a big plus for me. All of my computers see and work with the Fax driver, Printer driver and Scanning driver.

Now, let's mention some little things that make this machine great. I never turn it off as it has a low-power state (automatic after a few minutes of inactivity) where everything powers down with only one small, blue light glowing. If I send something to the printer it immediately comes to life, takes a few moments to warm up and (this is cool) the paper output tray *automatically* opens and the extension support flips out! It's the little things that make me smile. :-) Also, if I place one or more documents in the scanner slot (while in low power mode) then it instantly springs to life and takes a few moments to warm up.

Having stated that I print less and less these days, I must say I was impressed with the ink cartridges. They all have small, red LED lights that confirm they are plugged in correctly and in working order! Another smile. :-) Now I don't FAX much these days, but it's nice to know that it is hooked into the "clone" line through my PhonePower VOIP adapter (2 ports) and therefore is available upon demand. Oh, btw, the top lifts up like a flatbed scanner also, so I guess I will be donating the CanoScan 8600F soon.

Final analysis: This machine's capabilities pleasantly exceeded my expectations, even after reading the specs and reviews. It has proven to be fairly equal in functionality to the Xerox multi-function machine at work, but at a fraction of the cost. The only thing it can't do is print 11x17, but that isn't an issue at this time. I will try to get back in a year to report on it's longevity prospects.

UPDATE: I have knocked the rating down to 4 stars because there is no secondary sheet feeder. (My rating for this is actually 4.5 but that choice isn't available). Occasionally I have need to print on 8.5 x 14 (legal). With this unit one must remove the regular paper from the lower (main) paper tray, extend it out (at least they did build that into the unit) and load the 8.5 x 14 paper. I suppose I have been spoiled by top (secondary) sheet feeders on previous printers, so this is a small let-down. I guess I assumed the scanning feeder could be used as a secondary sheet feeder (for printing) but due to the design of the machine it cannot.

UPDATE, 11-24-13: I had occasion to send my sister a letter today (she hates email) so I typed one up and hit the print button. I have not printed anything for several months, and the print cartridges are now 7 months old. My letterhead includes a small photo of a sunset over a local river at the bottom. After hitting the print button the machine woke up, flipped out the print tray, spent a minute doing a self-diagnostics, then printed out my one page in about 7 seconds. Apart from a slight smudge at the top (probably due to inactivity for several months) the letter printed out flawlessly, including the photo. I reprinted the letter and there were no smudges or flaws. Since I have not needed "legal" size paper anymore, I am changing my rating to 5 stars since this machine is doing everything I need it to do.

UPDATE, 05-25-14: I lost my mother on Feb. 1 and inherited her estate. I was forced to move temporarily from WA to KY to liquidate the estate. My first priority was to set up my office so I could deal with the legal, financial and medical accounts and issues. I am also Trustee so there were many Will disbursements to deal with. I did not bring my MX922 from WA, instead I bought a new one once here. After 4 months of scanning, copying, and printing, I can now say I have given this machine a workout, including the printing function. It has performed most excellent. I also needed to buy more ink cartridges and discovered an alternate source (here on Amazon) for cartridges that are: (a) a fraction of the cost of Canon cartridges, (b) still have the same red LED's on them that communicate with the printer and (c) are relatively CLEAR, so one can see how much ink is left. I still cannot comment on photo printing as I am all digital these days when it comes to photography. But I can give this unit 5 stars for being a workhorse in all other areas! I can also say that if one schedules their need for printing envelopes in batches, this unit does that professionally as well.

UPDATE, 08-24-15: Earlier in the year I decided to start creating my own greeting cards (using CorelDraw) and printing out 5x7 photos for b-day gifts to relatives and friends (from PhotoShop). Both machines are still working great, and they produce exceptional photos. There are settings within the Canon print drivers that one can play with to improve the photo quality as well. I can also endorse the much cheaper ink cartridges that I buy from Blake Printing Supply on Amazon. I have gone through 2 sets (10 cartridges in a set) and they work great as well. For those wanting to find them, do a search on Amazon for "MX922 compatible ink cartridges" and look for Blake Printing Supply.

I have not had any issues with this printer! I have ours totally on WiFi and have never hooked it to the PC. Another reviewer mentioned that you need to "manually" find your WiFi SSID and type out the password, so that is what I did as well. Apparently there may be an issue with WiFi WPS auto connect where It will not let you get connected to Google Cloud Print. I did NOT use this feature! There is a Google app called Canon Easy Photo Print (EPP) for your android that is just super simple and it works well, so Google Cloud print is almost not needed. Once it "attached" itself to my secure WiFi, all PC's, Android devices on the network recognized it, so super easy! Installed the program on main PC from the provided disc without any issues. I will say that I never had to read any instructions (which is amazing!) to get this thing "hooked" up to our network or to use the software! If you can read the LCD display window on the printer, make a few decisions and press a button a few times, insert a cd into your computer, read, make a few decisions, click a mouse a few times, you are golden!

First thing I printed was a picture off of my Galaxy S4 using the above mentioned APP. It was a lot quicker than our older Kodak ESP7 and the picture looked very nice printed on Canon GlossyII paper. Next was the auto document feader (ADF) to scan to the PC. Scanning is very important to us as most every important document ends up in one our our RAID drives. From the PC software you have a bunch of choices for scanning which is super nice, good job Canon! I loaded documents into the ADF, went to the PC, chose both sided (duplex) scan, chose a RAID drive as a destination, selected a quality, B&W / Color, etc. Then start. It did take a while for the duplex part to shuffle it around, but a huge improvement over our old ESP7 which was manual load every page. Now I could chase kids around, goof around, drink some coffee, enjoy life a bit more! Scan complete, everything ended up super clear, sharp, pages in order with little effort on my part. If you operate a busy office and expect to have fast production in scanning or copying, then this printer is NOT for you. If you have a bit more relaxed schedule like mine for home use it is great.

We turn our printer completely off after each use, so it does take about 30 seconds or so to "warm up." All copies and print outs look really good and are printed in a reasonable time. We use the cheapest paper we can find and everything looks really nice! I suspect the quality would be better with a better quality paper? It is not laser printer fast, nor dot matrix line printer slow, again if you are running production and looking for speed, this is NOT for you! It does need to do the typical ink jet printer cycling thingy which is on average with other ink jets I have used, faster than most older printers including our old ESP7, I suspect slower that some more $$$ units?

The only gripe I have is pretty small potato's! When you scan it will save it to a .pdf file which is good, but you cannot crop and or adjust it before it is saved. Kodak software allowed you to see the image, make adjustments, crop size, THEN save all the changes into the final scan. Canon could make a software / firmware update for this!

We have no use for the FAX so I cannot review this! I will mention that I am more comfortable using computer software, I have built our main PC from the ground up, so if you don't have a clue about these things, it may not go as smooth for you. I would recommend asking that geek friend of yours to lend a helping hand, but once set up, it will be very easy to maintain and use.

    PROS:
Decent (average) price for this unit. If you can read, you can use it! Individual ink cartridges are reasonable priced and easy to replace. Holds lots of paper & photo paper. WiFi means you can place it anywhere, including a closet, just need power! Easily print pictures from your smart phone via WiFi. ADF means no more manually loading papers for scan/copy. Duplex ADF and print. Can print on printable CD's. Software gives you many many choices for all functions! There is a "Quiet Time" setting from within the software to cut back on noise during sleepy times.

    CONS:
Not enough speed for high production office settings. You cannot get firmware updates via WiFi, Canon, you need to fix this! Software could have minor tweaks. Unit is on the bigger side, could be slimmed down a bit.

I highly recommend this printer for light to medium home use, it has proven to be a good investment for our family!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this printer as no warranty or installation is provided
Reviewed in India on May 28, 2018
Hey People, please don't buy this printer. It's an international product. There is no installation or warranty. I have bought it 2 months ago and struggling to install it.The dealer refused to take the printer back and am stuck with a printer that can't be used..

Unfortunately, I did not see any bad review's when I purchased this printer in April 2018. I am stuck with this printer, as I was unaware that this product is not available in India and will not cover warranty. Amazon did not specify on their portal that it is a US make. I struggled for more than a 2 weeks requesting Canon / Amazon to send a technician to install the drivers. Only after several calls, mails did Canon identify that the serial number does not match with the products available in India and they will not be able to support us in anyway. I tried returning the printer to Amazon but they did not accept at it had past the 1 week return period. I did put a claim as well to no avail.

As Canon or Amazon did not support me, I requested an IT person to install the printer for which we had to pay additional charges, it worked for some time, and now the printer has stopped working. I have sent it to one of the Canon dealer for repairs and they are unable to support me.
PEOPLE PLEASE BE AWARE AND NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. I HAVE GONE THROUGH A LOT OF TRAUMA DUE TO THIS AS THIS WAS PURCHASED FOR THE OFFICE AND DUE TO THE WRONG CHOICE I HAVE GOT INTO DEEP TROUBLE WITH MY SUPERIORS. -

I am really happy with this printer. By comparison, I bought both 3 HP inkjet printers when my two children when off to college (one each for them and one for me). All 3 of them died early in the 2nd year. I replaced with the MX822 version and the printer is still working fine. The scanner on it started giving 'wobbly' scans and so I replaced with this unit. I use inexpensive ink from ebay and expect it to last another 5 years +. Note that we do use the unit pretty heavily. My wife is a primary school teacher and prints tons of stuff.

Buena impression, pero los cartuchos de tinta son caros y se cosumen rapidamente. velocidad media, versatlilidad media. muy voluminosa, poco ruido.
