At $20 for a set of three and $30 for a set of six, I'm gonna have to give them a 5 star rating.
5-star: They feel GREAT! They throw great. They stick great. The weight, length, and balance are perfect! They're not too sharp, and they're not too dull. They easily can be sharpened up with a metal file or grinder. And to top it off... If they break (and they will), Smith & Wesson has a lifetime warranty, which if you call them and send proof of the broken knives, they will REPLACE the set!
3-star: They feature, what I call, a 'tuning fork' design. Because of this, they sound like a crash of thunder and lightning when they miss! They also break at the cuts, too. I've owned two sets of these, and 4 of the 6 have broken in a year. 2 have broken at the circles, and the other 2 have broken at handles. The last one broke on a 'lob' no-spin throw from 18 feet. To their credit, I hadn't broken one in at least 8 months...
Something else that happened right off-the-bat was that they have somewhat hard edges on the handles, so much so that you'll want to file these and make them a bit rounded off. This is because if they happen to clang together, you'll get little burs and slivers that pop up on the handles, and these will go into your hands/fingers or will cut you up when you throw.
TIP: On top of filing down the handles a bit, I use orange Gorilla tape around the handle edges. This helps reduce the burs/slivers from happening in the first place, plus, it helps you to find the knives if they go into the grass or brush/bushes. I peel the tape into small strips (1/4 inch) and edge it around the sides of the handles.
ALSO: Adding tape over the holes reduces the sound of the clang! Hope that helps!
Original:
We, my yeating family, really like the axes. They come sharp enough to actually cut you if you get careless. When you add that to the weight of these axes it means they will stick into wood it you hit it. They are amazingly easy to throw, once you get you distance set, all three of us were sticking them on every throw.
The knives of of the same quality and have good weight to them, I was concerned after reading the reviews that they would break. They held up to me, and I throw hard! The draw back to the knives is, dull does not begin to explain it. It is like a steel bar that has been smoothed to avoid scratching the user, and then one end drawn to a point. The tip will pierce the skin with little effort, the rest of the blade would literally smash butter as you tried to get it from a container to butter your bread.
For training I highly recommend both. I can get the knives to stick about 75% of the time, probably closer to 85-90% if I sharpen them. But from a training point of view, their weight makes up for the sharpness. I bought these to train, and learn to throw. I am getting my grip and form down with them so they are doing their job well.
Drawbacks: If you think that steel used in a throwing blade should never bend or chip, you are wrong, the blades need to flex or they will break. This is the quality of steel I expected for the set. After several hours of throwing (actually it is the missing that messes them up) we acquired some small folds in the edges of the axes, these are minor and about 5 minutes of work per axe with a wet stone smoothed out the jagged parts enough to not snag on anything. To remove the marring completely would need removing about 1/32-1/16 of an inch. We are just going to throw them again so they do not need to be perfect. So the fact that they are a soft steel and need maintenance sucks, but it is necessary.
Knives: same thing as above with the steel. The thing is, I will be sharpening these soon. The fact that they didn’t even pretend to put a cutting edge on them means I need to take them to the grinder to put a rough edge on them. Literally, there is no edge, the knife slopes to a point but it is impossible to cut yourself on them. If not for the point I would give them to a toddler and let them throw them.
Bottom line: I grew up buying the cheapest thing around or making my own stuff. That said, I have thrown sheet metal thick throwing stars and knives, to small yet decent “beginner” quality knives. Camping axes and hatchets, along with drywall hammers. Short of buying professional grade axes and knives, this is the best I have ever purchased!
