After years and years of messing with inkjets, though they do better photos, I'm done with them. This LED-based (not true laser) but laser-style printer set up beautifully, found my wireless booster here upstairs immediately and connected with a button push (WPS function, not all routers have that), prints beautiful text and the photo images as I said look certainly very good with a little tweaking. And they print fast...like almost text-page fast! Try a high res print on a consumer-level inkjet and see how long it takes.
The key as always is follow the start up guide to the letter and make sure you check with brother if you're not sure which setup mode you want (mobile, wireless, usb, ethernet etc). Then just take it slow, step by step, and you won't have any problems.
If you do, call Brother: their support is supposed to be very good.
I will reset the start-up cartridges that come with the printer when it says they're out: apparently the printer is set up to count pages, not actual toner usage.
There's a five-star review fairly recently that tells you exactly how to reset the carts so you get the full amount of toner in them...it'll add 100s of pages to your capability.
Here's my summary of how to do the ink cartridge reset process to save you time reading a bunch of reviews:
toner reset tips for Brother HL-3170CDW (below are comments from a number of reviewers)
Great printer, but the toner life is based (as far as I can tell) solely on pages printed. So if you print x number of pages even with only a single dot of color on it, the printer will count that as a page printed in that color. My starter black toner quit after 250 pages.
Here is how to fix this -
1. open the top of the printer, just a little bit, not all the way. leave it propped open for this to work.
1. someone else disagrees: "Seems you have to open the lid all the way until it clicks."
2. another reviewer: "At first the printer didn't accept the "Secure" and "X Cancel" keypress, but did after I power cycled it."
3. turned printer off/back on and repeated the simultaneous pressing of "security" and "X-cancel,"
1. that seemed to do the trick
2. Hit the round button at the top left corner. (on/off button)
3. Simultaneously press the "Secure" and "X Cancel" buttons.
1. This puts printer into special service mode.
4. Use the + and - buttons to scroll to whichever toner you want to reset. Each color should have three options which let you tell the machine what type of 'new' toner cartridge is installed
5. "Y.TNR-STR" is yellow starter, "Y.TNR-HC" is high capacity and "Y.TNR.STD" is standard .
6. hit the "OK" button to get an "OK reset cancel" type screen.
7. Hit the up arrow to reset. Now you're back to printing in style!
another reviewer: purchase a replacement cartridge in the meantime
so that you will have one on hand when you do run out
considering the toner measurement level is practically useless.
KUDOS from another reviewer:
I have used this method twice and STILL have not replaced a cartridge!
GOOD LUCK!
First of all, stupid me for waiting. I bought this in November 2016, didn't install it until after the holidays. AKA, after the return period. Didn't work immediately. The printer fails to fuse the toner to the paper reliably. All 4 toner colors completely fade or disappear.
Ok, sure. Defective unit. Fine. I have been battling with Brother since December to get this resolved. It's now April 20th, still no resolution. I have been bounced around from escalations to senior specialists. The latest dagger was being told that they would send a refurbished printer for me to exchange my model with, and that it would arrive in 2-3 business days. Gave them my credit card info, all that standard stuff. But finally! A resolution! ...That was 15 days ago.
I'm at my wits end. I already own a Brother HL-2140 and love it. I've run reams and reams of paper through that little printer and it continues to serve me well. But after this? I can't recommend Brother brand anything to anyone.
I called again for the umpteenth time to ask what the status was on the exchange printer that was being sent to me was? They had no record of that ever happening. Blood pressure rising.
Anyway, after a total of 5 months, I was finally able to get Brother to swap my defective unit with one of theirs. From then on out, we've had zero problems. Prints are beautiful and have not had a single print issue since. I haven't had any jamming issues ever, so it really does seem to be a decent printer marred by a horrible experience in customer service.
But upon reading reviews of just about any home/small business grade color laser printer, they're all riddled with 1 star reviews. So it seems it's just luck of the draw. There doesn't seem to be a clear choice.
For us, there was a lot of strife, but in the end, we do love the printer. It works great from our computers, and even if we need to quickly print something from our smartphones using the appropriate plug-in. It's really a nice machine. After using it, it enters sleep and eventually a deep sleep state where it rests and doesn't make a noise until you call upon it again.
Top reviews from other countries
This printer has literally all the features anyone can want from a colour laser! It has wireless, even a wireless-N, two-sided printing (duplexing), can print letter and legal, envelopes, labels, intuitive control panel with well-designed firm, durable buttons, very good instructions and the basic startup guide and a well-built body. The toner cartridges are very well packed right inside the printer and very easy to unpack by following the instructions. The wireless setup was also nearly perfect, except that when I first print, it seems to take some time for Windows 7 (Professional, 64-bit, is what I use) to detect the printer, so that I get a message that there is not connection to the printer, but when I actually send the print job, it prints fine. This may be fixed with a driver update and is certainly not a concern since it prints anyways.
I just printed three high-definition photos but guess where they came from? - MY SAMSUNG Android SMARTPHONE! Yes, Brother already has an Android app you can use to print your photos, documents and other things right from your smartphone and again, it worked perfectly. The photos are good for laser printer, with some minor banding in certain photos, but one does not buy a colour LASER to print photos! If you mostly print photos, you would buy a photo quality inkjet! As for documents, they print very well and are sharp. I use the Staples Laser printer paper, of 24 lbs, at 96 brightness. Before buying this paper, I actually had to print on some standard inkjet paper and it printed fine without any issues.
The printer also has many features and you don't even have to install anything to access all the printer's features! You just connect to the printer from a web browser (I tried both Firefox and Internet Explorer without issues). It has some really neat administrator features which you may not find in USB (non-network) printers.
One last thing: The Annual Reader Survey done by PC Magazine every year, rates Brother printers second only to Xerox and several notches above the once-mighty HP printers in reliability, technical support and customer satisfaction. This printer definitely lives up to these survey results!
**UPDATE August 2015: Still running without any issues. Wireless connectivity works fine. The printer wakes up every time and prints my documents, even from deep sleep mode.
I highly recommend this marvellous printer!
1) Price. I pick this printer up for $199.00 at amazon. I spent months doing research and being patient and it pays off.
2) Quality. For the price I paid to the the quality picture I got, I am very happy with this printer. It prints faster than my black and white laser printer. Replacing the four toners are relatively cheaper than most of the other colour printer out there.
3) Network connectivity is available via wireless, or RJ45 ethernet, or USB. All of which is what we have and use every day in any modern PC.
What is not to like about this printer if it has met all of the requirements above? Can't say enough good things about this printer.
Oh, one thing I didn't like about this printer was that it did not have the USB or RJ45 ethernet cable with the printer. What's with that... someone forgot to throw these cable in the packaging.
Thank you... Brother
The color output of the printer with official toner was surprisingly good. Not inkjet good, but better than what I expected from a laser good.
For ordinary use, I would say this printer is quite awesome. It prints consistently and fast. It is turning out to be quite reliable. I'm currently at roughly 5000 pages printed and still working well... for ordinary use.
There are number of issues that drop a star for this printer though.
For 20lbs paper, I've never seen this printer jam or have any issues. But I prefer 24lbs paper if it's going to be a duplex print (which this printer was intended for). Moving up to 24lbs starts jamming when you do auto-duplex (at about 5% chance). It's always the problem with the paper going back in. Going up to even thicker paper increases jamming probability even further with duplex. My 67lbs paper never succeeded. For specialty laser papers, auto-duplex is absolutely not worth the attempt.
HP laser glossy paper, there's about >50% chance it'll get jammed even without duplex. I imagine it'll have near 100% chance on duplex as well.
Duplex is also extremely slow. If you're printing over 10 pages, it's better to just print all the odd pages, flip it over manually and put it back in the tray and print all the even pages. I haven't timed it, but it sure feels like it's 5-10 times slower and I don't intend that to be an exaggeration. It gets a lot worse when it jams and constantly needs babysitting.
I don't regret my choice of purchase as I don't feel there's any significant better at the same pricing point. But duplex printing seems to leave a lot to be desired.
Love this printer. Would recommend to anyone and everyone. I got it at a fantastic price; it could have been a steal if it had a scanner.
