I've wanted a vibrating platform for many, MANY years. My interest in them is primarily the possibility of aiding in building bone mass. Though I wanted one of those fancy "big" machines that have two motors and vibrate in multiple directions, I've come to realize quite quickly that buying a super expensive platform is truly unnecessary as this one works quite well. Plus, I definitely can't afford to drop 2-3 thousand dollars or more!
I first learned about the existence of vibrating plates when I saw a NASA video a few years ago (ya, I'm kind of a space geek!). The subject of the video was about astronauts maintaining their bone density in space. They lose on average 1-2% of their bone mass per month in zero gravity because we humans require weight on our bones as well as the actuation of our muscles moving and applying stress to our bones to maintain bone density. The vibrating platform was studied by NASA among many other things and found that it indeed showed promise. Of course what I saw was a vibrating platform attached to a wall with an astronaut strapped down to it almost as if he were lying down. So the idea behind this is that if it can prevent bone density loss in zero gravity, maybe it can help build bone as well here on Earth in our 1G gravity. Plus, it can possibly aid in building bone mass by also helping to build muscle mass to apply the stress needed to not just maintain current levels of bone density but also possibly increase it.
So, all that being said, I purchased this primarily for my mother who has osteoporosis and secondarily for me as I have osteopenia, meaning my bone density sits somewhere in the middle between normal bone density and osteoporosis. And, I honestly could care less about what the naysayers have to say about all this because I KNOW what I felt as does my mother!
7.11.14 I just wanted to post an update since we've had this machine for a couple of weeks now. First off, shipping was FAST. I felt that assembly was easy and straight forward though anyone who has muscle weakness or atrophy should ask for help. I assembled it alone but having 2 people do it would make it a breeze. My mother will probably kill me or faint in shock and horror if she reads this part but for you? I'll take the risk...she is 72 and has been using this twice a day since I bought it and she is totally in love with this machine. Gee mother, like everyone who reads this is gonna know who you are! (Rolling eyes now)
The one thing I want to note here is that this machine comes with 2 pre-programmed sessions. Both programs are at this early point in time WAY too much for either of us to handle as both programs reach 40 out of 50 available speeds. The up and down sideways see-saw motion is an odd sensation (for us) to get used to so for now, we are using the machine on the free-form program which is labeled "HL" and working our way up from there. I've yet to figure out what "HL" stands for. Hi-Low? Hey Larry? Who knows. We have not yet utilized the resistance bands that come with the machine that hook directly to the vibrating platform itself (using two good size "eye hooks") because we both feel the need to make sure we can keep our balance as we increase the speed. But, that's just us. Others may be able to zip right up there to the machine's highest setting. I don't recall reading this in the initial description of the machine, I'm guessing the picture shown is of an older model, but the machine does have pulse sensors on each handle/rail. At first I thought they were buttons to manipulate the settings because they look like up and down arrows, but no they are indeed sensors. In the small window that shows the time of your workout (a 10 minute countdown), you can push a button have it show your heart rate as well. A nice thoughtful little touch and a pleasant surprise.
OH❗️Assembly tip, in order to prevent the brief frustration I had with the upright that connects the console to the platform...undo the loose knot of the wire at top of the upright BUT use something like a clothespin to hold it in place at the top so that it can't slip and fall down toward the base. You'll need that extra slack in the wire.
If anyone has any questions for me, please feel free to ask by posting a comment or of course you can use the "ask question" link to get the opinion of lots of people.
Oh gee! I just noticed I have bypassed Amazon's suggestions on how to post a review. I'm well over 300 words at this point. Oops! But hey! I'm female. What else is there to say? lol
I am age 54 female and have MS. While weight loss would be a nice bonus, my purpose was pain relief first and foremost, and, to increase muscle tone and stimulation without fear of falling and injuring myself. I took one too many falls at the gym and stopped going, and the increased sedentary lifestyle has made me both pick up weight, and, made my awkward gait much worse, not to mention more painful.
The box was securely packed and thankfully the delivery driver shoved it inside for me -- I could not have lifted it on my own, that's for sure. Once inside though, it was easy to slice open and unpack, and there are not a lot of small parts to contend with.
My booklet of instructions was fine. There are a great many comments complaining of "Engrish" instructions, but I didn't find that to be a problem. It was clear and easy to assemble and I was using my machine within an hour of delivery. In addition, included was a second booklet of basic tips and instructions. Having done my research into the benefits of WBV first, I can use the same research skills to find good exercise tips -- I don't expect a budget machine to hold my hand through every step of the process. Anyway, the second booklet explained what all the functions and controls were for -- and I can figure out what exercises to add in the future, on my own.
So, as for the machine itself, it's definitely a big hulking thing with personality. It's not a low profile, and while I dislike the look of any exercise equipment in living quarters (dust magnets, most of them), this is an important machine and has to be front and center so I can easily and frequently use it -- and I will.
Within the hour I was standing on it and vibrating myself using Level 1, the intro level, and letting the machine auto-program the speed and intensity as it took me through a 10 minute session. The pain relief was almost immediate.
I have problem areas on my right side, more than my left, and tingling and discomfort in my legs and lower back. By leaning one direction, and then another direction, I can vary the intensity and where the vibrations hit. Standing with my legs locked sends the WBV all the way up my spine and jiggles my face cheeks. Stopping and bending my legs focuses it on my lower body, only. Sitting on the machine surprisingly didn't do much for my chronically sore tailbone at all -- it was too diffused to be of any good.
I am not yet secure enough or limber enough to do anything more involved than standing, twisting, and bending, but eventually, as I progress, I'll incorporate more exercises and use the included Yoga Bands. I took them off because they just rattle when I'm not using them, and I don't have a need for them yet.
Curiously, after 3x on the machine, I woke up with a very sore throat and a runny nose, and I have not had a cold in years. Why now? I treated it as quickly as I could to prevent getting a full blown cold, and it did go away, and then I read that the WBV encourages "detox." I thought "What the heck?" and read up on WBV Detox Affects and learned that as the muscles contract and release after having had not much stimulation, they release toxins (whatever those may be) and feeling unwell is not uncommon. Hmm. Well, after 3x I started a cold, so did I flush toxins out of my system? Who knows. Maybe?
The funny aspect of this machine is that its the first time I've ever had to say "No, you've already used it 2x today. No more." I WANT to use it all day because it feels SO good and reduces my pain so quickly. My legs and feet tingle all over (in a good way, unlike MS tingling), like blood is circulating, which it never did before. I could walk to the store and post office in a much more straight line (not as much swaying) and my feet didn't feel quite so unsteady. Not a miracle cure by any means, but so much more comfort, especially at night. Using this once when I get up, and once before I go to work, gives me pain relief during my morning, and, less pain to sleep.
My impression is that I also have less spasms in my feet at night, but it's too soon to say with certainty. I will come back in a month's time or more to update my progress and make newer remarks, because loving a machine during Week 1 is not the same a loving a machine in Week 6 or 8, etc.
Additional Pros:
I think this machine is VERY quiet. I have a loft apartment with concrete floors, and it's on an uncarpeted floor. I have no issue with the sound whatever. Can easily watch TV or listen to music whilst using it.
It was not difficult for me to assemble and I did it alone, with no assistance.
The screws, bolts and washers are already loosely in place, and you're instructed to unscrew them, put the components together, and reinsert the screws and washers. While this may seem like repetitive work, I actually found it REALLY smart. Instead of a baggie of all sizes of nuts, bolts and washers, and one little allen wrench, you are shown exactly what sizes go where by having them loosely affixed in the right spots. That's a smart time saver and the chances of missing parts are greatly diminished because the manufacturer has to put all those nuts and bolts where they belong -- just as we do. I found this so useful I wonder why more companies don't do this. Also, the included three-sided wrench is actually a really good one -- not just the tiny allen wrench you may get with a cheap ready-to-assemble device. That goes in my toolbox.
Cons:
The pulse reader doesn't seem accurate (which doesn't really bother me) but this could be a placement issue. I am 5'7 but have somewhat short arms, and my hands don't naturally reach the pulse reader. Just my fingertips. I have to bend my knees and stoop somewhat to make sure I am gripping in the right position, but as soon as I do that, the intensity drops dramatically because I'm absorbing the vibrations with my knees bent. When I'm straight and tall, it's much more intense, but I can't take a pulse reading in that position because the placement of the pulse reader is not ideal. So it's a toss up. Could be that it's inaccurate in ANY position, or, it's not accurate because I can't grip in the ideal position.
Update 1:
I've had the machine for about a week. I use it 2x per day -- as soon as I awake, and, right before bed. A few times if I am stiff or sore, I'll hop on for a minute or two to "work out a kink." For the morning, it vibrates out my stiff back, hips, and tailbone pain from sleeping, and makes me feel more alert and steady in the shower. I used to have to hold on to the wall for support in the shower to not slip, but I'm much stronger. At night, it decreases my spasms significantly. My toes don't cramp and curl so painfully, as they did before. I went for a walk with my boyfriend for coffee and we had to hurry across a street in the crosswalk to avoid a fast approaching car and I quickly scooted out of the way and hopped up onto a curb. That seems normal to you fine folks, but, as my BF pointed out "I have not seen you move so fast and confidently in 10 years. You don't walk 'so old' darling. Makes me want to cheer."
Update 2: I've now had it for more than 6 months and I use it about 3-4x per week in a busy week, and daily when I have more leisure time. I feel poorly when I *don't* use it, so I have to remind myself to jump on it and keep a schedule. When I keep that schedule of daily use, I determinately have less leg cramping and toe curling at night, and, anytime I get muscle spasms in my lower back, this rattles them out very very quickly. It has not done diddly for weight loss, and I hadn't expected it to, but this machine is just an overall great addition to my therapy program. A very very happy purchase for me.
