Update, this bike has been excellent in everyday use going on two months. The 25 one touch resistance levels are getting use as we are able to increase them as we progress. We also ordered the POLAR chest strap (get the uncoded one)and it links up to the telemetric enabled heart rate monitor with no drama. Regards
I thought that an update after six months of use would be helpful to some. This bike is still a joy! Easy to adjust with just the single lever between users. We have added some strips of tape on the rail so that different user position lock downs are quick and consistent. We also like that selecting users by name is quickly done, and your program starts automatically as soon as you begin to pedal. When your ride is over you push stop, and a cool down period begins that is optional. You can just walk away and it will turn itself off. My Kindle fits the book shelf and is steady for a good read that allows exercise time to pass before I know it which is a good thing. Regards
1. Comfort and fit: Very comfortable seat, semi-rigid ventilated seat back, cushion on ventilated panel bottom of seat, excellent. The seat adjustment for user height is quick and easy, a lever pushed down to release and move to a good spot then pull the lever up, done. However, I am about 6' 2" and I have the seat all the way back (or up the ramp), and it's fine for me, no issues at all but I might've wanted another fraction of an inch more travel. If you are taller than I am, you may be comfy or you may run out of travel and feel cramped, so try one in person before purchasing. RECOMMENDATION FOR SCHWINN: Keep the ramp and easy adjustment amongst users as-is, but hey, why not have two or three positions on the underside of the seat that one can connect it with so you can create normal, larger, and smaller ranges to accommodate people? If I was 6' 6" I'd say I'm out of the bell-curve, but at 6' 2", I'm in it and at the limits of the machine. I weigh around 235-240-lbs with clothing and the machine is rated at 300-lbs, it's fine. The pedals are large enough for my size 13 feet and have adjustable straps.
2. Assembly: Took my 17-yr old son about an hour to assemble, no issues, instructions are pretty clear. If you are totally non-mechanical, get a bicycling friend to help. If you know bicycles or can usually assemble stuff like this, it will be a breeze.
3. Set up: Pretty easy, the instructions are generally good. They go through assembly in detail and setting up the date and how it operates and such, but nothing in the manual about populating data for the up-to-four users for whom it can accommodate personalized info, like age (affects max heart rate) and weight, etc. However, if you step back and look at the display and notice the up and down arrows and such, it becomes apparent what to do and you should be able to figure it out in a few minutes. If not, again, find a friend. [UPDATE: The paper manual that came with my bike goes up to page 23. Fishing around online at[...], the copy at the web site has many more pages and includes instructions for setting up user parameters is on page 28. More info yet may be on other pages that follow, that were not included with the manual coming with the bike. Go figure.] The instructions could be a bit more complete (what's there is clear but not all of it is there, like individual user parameter entry), but in spite of that, no issues. There is a thin power cord that runs from a jack at the nose of the machine to a plug-in transformer, and the cord is long enough to juuuuuuuuuuust reach the rear of the machine if that's where AC power is (that's where mine is, I have a TV on the opposite wall to look forward at), but having a surge-protector type of power strip (to protect the electronic controls) is a good idea and will extend the range to an outlet. I used electrical tie wraps (found in any hardware or electrical supply store) to secure the wire to the floor frame rail so the cord does not get stepped on or tangled and eventually broken. Very optional but would've been nice if Schwinn provided some clips for that.
4. Display: Good display, illuminated LED screen. A brightness adjustment would be nice, it's okay in most conditions but if you are looking over it at a TV screen, it would be nice to dim it a bit, but a minor issue. It has connections and speakers to use media players, and a small but effective cooling fan for the user. Pretty nice. What annoys me on this is that the display for distance (e.g., miles "traveled", elapsed time, heart rate, calories burned, etc.) shows three items at a time, which is okay but they are in fixed groups, so if you want to view, say, speed (mph), pedal RPM, and pulse rate, fine, but if you find speed and RPM a bit redundant and want to, instead, view speed, elapsed time, and pulse rate, sorry, you can't do it. You can switch back and forth during a workout to check on things, but I think if they set up the screen as three sections and each section in turn can be programmed to display one of the several data available, it would be cheap and easy for them to do, and much, much, much better for users who want to choose what they see. RECOMMENDATION FOR SCHWINN: You have several data available (speed, RPM, pulse rate, distance traveled, calories burned, etc.), so allow each "box" on the LED display to show one of them, even if a user wants to all three boxes to show the same info, whatever, let the USER select and tailor it to what they want to know. Should be just program, at worst some kind of sectioning of the LED panel, so what can that all cost? Heart rate and time should be continuously displayed, constantly monitored. I have an Omron heart-rate monitor (chest strap) and the Omron wrist read-out and my old Polar wrist strap and another older one I have all read it consistently and accurately. The Schwinn reads it's signal much of the time but sometimes shows zero pulse (no signal) or some odd number that's about half of actual rate, and adjusting the chest strap does not help, and this flaky read-out is annoying and can obviate the convenience of the machine displaying on-screen (vs having to look down at your wrist which is at your side next to the seat). I can't say if it's the Schwinn or come compatibility issue with my Omron chest strap transmitter, but I would think that the bike would be capable of dealing with all current technology and normal variances.
5. Operation: Smooth as glass, quiet, very nice! It has leveling adjustments but I did not need to adjust them, mine sits on a thin-to-medium carpet in a workout room with concrete basement floor and is solid. Nothing more to say.
SUMMARY:
Schwinn should extend the seat adjustment range, either the easy-adjustment (simple lever up and down) or how (where/which holes) the seat uses to be attached, so it can accommodate taller people, it's cramped if over 6' 2". It can take up to 300-lb so 6' 2" is not a logical height limit nor very tall by contemporary standards. Schwinn should also expand the instructions a bit to include explicitly how to set up users (user data), and a few words on what data survives and what is lost if there's a power outage or, as I do, you turn off the power strip for the device in between workouts. Optional but nice if Schwinn had provided some clips for the power cord to secure it if the AC outlet is by the rear of the machine and not at the front / nose of it. And last, Schwinn should revise the LED screen, probably just programming and not hardware so should be easy, so the three data items displayed (speed, calories burned, etc.) can be individually selected by the lowly user instead of having to choose what some Schwinn person decided were nice troops of three items, no mix and match and the parameter you want to see now just switched to something else, very annoying. Take advantage of electronics and programming, they are not "hard" switches, after all! I don't know if Schwinn can help the situation where the display seems to lose my chest strap heart-rate signal (while my wrist units continue to get it without issue), but if there is something to be done to fix or help that, it should be done.
I rated this 4-stars. I like the machine a lot and recommend it, but I did not go to 5-stars due to the limit on user height or size (I'm 6' 2" and comfortable but am at the max limit, the annoying inflexibility of the workout data display, flaky heart-rate signal, and the missing (but minor) info in the instructions (programming user parameters). It's probably 4.5-starts for me and only minor annoyances, but 4 or fewer starts if you are taller than I am!
Top reviews from other countries
The bike itself is absolutely silent. I sit my iPad on the shelf and plug it in to the built in speakers and watch videos while biking. Quality is good enough. I didn't purchase the bike for the electronics.
The pedals are large and very comfortable. I don't use the straps but may as time goes on. The seat is extremely comfortable once you find a sitting position that works for you. Adjustment is very easy and clamps securely. Again, this bike is really well built.
My only suggestion is that you have someone to help you when the bike arrives. The box weighs over 100lbs and the delivery driver is not going to carry it in for you. I opened the box in my front porch and carried it in piece by piece. That lightened it up a bit but the bike frame is large and quite heavy. Overall a very nice product.
